Todd Martin of SI.com has written an article about how some of Pride’s former fighters could impact the UFC. In the article Martin has some good quotes from the likes of Mauro Ranallo, Dave Meltzer and Dana White. And according to the article, Fedor Emelianenko and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua each could factor in the UFC title picture in quick fashion.
White’s and Martin’s comments on Fedor are very interesting:
UFC is very interested in Fedor, and White says he is working on getting a deal done. Part of the difficulty for him is Fedor’s management team. White says that he has “no idea what these crazy Russians are going to do.” White will give Fedor an immediate title shot if and when he is brought in.
So if Fedor signs with the UFC soon then it could be possible we’d see him fight the winner of next month’s match between Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga before year’s end.
In regard to Shogun:
A member of the vaunted Chute Boxe Academy, Shogun signed with UFC, and will be fighting September 22 in Anaheim. UFC doesn’t have an opponent yet, but White promises an exciting matchup, “We want to line him up with someone good, introduce him to the US market in the right way.”
White says that if Shogun wins in September, he will get the next title shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. That could lead to a rematch with Jackson, who Shogun obliterated in Japan.
