It’s official. No, I mean it really is official.
In an article by Thomas Gerbasi on its web site, the UFC has formally announced the return of former Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva to the promotion.
“Many fighters have a dream of fighting for the UFC, and as a champion for six years in Japan, my dream has always been to have the UFC belt,” Silva is quoted as saying in the article. “Today, I’m one step closer to this goal.”
UFC president Dana White was quoted as well.
“As crazy as this sounds, this is the pinnacle of my seven year career in this company,” White said. “I’m so excited to have this guy under contract. He grabbed my arm and looked me in the eyes like one of his pre-fight staredowns and he said ‘I’m gonna fight so good for you, you’re gonna see the best fights ever from Wanderlei Silva.’”
A date for his first match back and his first opponent have not been determined. One would have to assume though that his first match could be a long-awaited showdown with fellow light heavyweight standout Chuck Liddell. Rumors of a bout between the two at a UFC event to be held in Las Vegas on December 29 have been circulating for quite some time.
One would thing that the only man standing between a fight between the two is Keith Jardine, who is slated to fight Liddell on September 22 at UFC 76 in Anaheim, Calif.
