maybe one of the fighters got in his face and bitched him up?

I have to agree with Ivan. I've never seen anything attributed to Bernstein that has bad mouthed MMA. He's always treated MMA fighters with the same respect he would a boxer.

I don't recall seeing any articles in which Al Bernstein badmouths MMA and its fans. I probably did and forgot about it, but could you send along any links? Those quotes would be much more significant now that he is apparently an MMA broadcaster.

Just saw this last comment, and I have to set the record straight--this is Al Bernstein--and I have NEVER denounced MMA fans or said it's a blood sport. In fact, I have always said there is plenty of room for both MMA and boxing in the big tent of combat sports. Ihave a lot of respect for the MMA participants, as I do boxers. That's why I accepted the assignment to do the ShowXC show last night. I certainly am no MMA expert--but as a play by play announcer on the show I tried to provide information and handle the traffic of the broadcast and allow Stephen to do the superb analysis that he always does. Stephen and Mauro do a wonderful job on that show and the EliteXC show, and will continue to do so. I, like so many of you, will continue to watch. Thanks top all of you on this forum for your comments, both pro and con.

Al Bernstein's a strange dude. He's been quoted in a number of articles, denouncing the fans of MMA and just claiming its a blood sport. But he's also attended UFC 44 and now commentates this show last night.

@ Sam Caplan. Which of these three explanations would make the most sense:

1.) I was addressing my comments to a completely random fighter (Sammy Morgan) who was not on the card being discussed and has nothing to do with ShoXC.

2.) I was referencing a hypothetical man-on-man love child that you and your colleague created.

3.) I made a simple typing error.

The smart money's on number 3.

Sam Morgan, lay off Bernstein please. He did an awesome job his first time out. He knew enough to keep his mouth shut when he didn't understand what was going on and let Quadros explain the grappling. Also, unlike many inexperienced MMA announcers who are paired up with veterans, Bernstein didn't constantly throw annoying, uninformed questions to his color man (see Bas Rutten's broadcast partner for the first Gracie FC show).

Furthermore, Bernstein has a very chill, natural delivery as opposed to Mauro's over-the-top, twitchy, 20 cappuccino, forced, fake, bad-pun-riddled, smarmy, WWE promoter announcing style. Bernstein lent the broadcast booth as sense of calm professionalism, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The more Bernstein watches the sport, the better he'll get at his job. There is certainly no shortage of MMA fight and instructional DVDs that he can buy to help bring himself up to speed faster. I very much hope they keep using him (and Quadros) for at least the ShoXC cards, if not the EliteXC broadcasts as well.

The LaRosa / Baszler fight was back and forth until LaRosa put her away at the end. That was a really entertaining fight. Baszler can bring no doubt. Carano/Baszler would also be another entertaining fight. I hope we see this one at 135lbs and not 145 or whatever weight Carano fights at.

I liked seeing Al Bernstein on the broadcast. He is no Mauro but he's a familiar voice and if they continue to use him I'm sure he'll get better at calling MMA.

I also was surprised to the the Kimbo street fight video in the promo. Ya know CFFC should have sold them some highlights from the Kimbo/Mercer fight to use for the promo, we know they could have use the money!

Sam thanx for heading up.

So Shayna is ready to fight now? or i should say "EliteXC and Gina are ready to fight finally"? lol .

Ivan , its old old story among female MMA fans and fighters, u just dont know that and i dont want to repeat it again here. EliteXC has been doing OK in most of cases, but The only part i dont like about them is their female division and that silly "protected cage" for their star.

That really pissed us off , although the top fighters at 135lb dont complain officially coz they are nice girls, dont want o say bad about eac others and know they still need the " face" of Female MMA to spread to the world. But a lot of ridiculous things has been going under the water i have heard, most of the fighters U named has posed doubt to the treatment of EliteXC`s female division.

i am not a representative of Female MMA but still very proud of Shayna if she decided to fight against a heavy fighter than her usual weight. My money would be on Shayna too.

Dont take me wrong, im not saying Gina is not a good fighter. Her striking skills and efforts for ground fight is excellent. She has big potential obviously.

But first of all, she has to make weight if she wants to prove herself at 135 lb against Tara, Amanda, Shayna, Roxanne, and Debi. Laura, those top girls and legends. Anyways, its a good sign that EliteXC is taking female division serious finally.

"Shayna Baszler will accept the fight offer against Gina Carano? I doubt it. they r at different weight class by now. "

Are you kidding me? If anything, it's Carano that EliteXC would be protecting if they didn't book that fight. Baszler has shown an ability to beat any female mixed martial artist in North America except for Tara LaRosa and Amanda Buckner, who are the top two female MMA fighters in the U.S., and even against them she put up good fights. In a battle of Carano and Baszler, even though Carano would have a weight advantage, it would be likely that Baszler would win, and possibly with a very quick submission just as in the Jennifer Tate fight. EliteXC probably should have booked Baszler to fight Carano on the Hawaii show, but instead they booked Carano to fight someone who had just lost her last fight not long before.

Just a heads up, but Gary Shaw is quoted in a press release after the fact as saying that Baszler may have earned a shot at Gina Carano with the decisive victory over Tate.

My money would be on Baszler.

Ivan, I agree that footage of Kimbo's street fights should not be used for promo purposes. You don't want to glamorize street fights because it sends kids the wrong message. You don't want people thinking they can get into a major MMA promotion by fighting in the street and putting it up on YouTube. If they need footage of Kimbo for promo purposes, show him in the gym working with Bas Rutten.

The only time I think it would be appropriate to show brief shots of his street fights is if they do any documentary-style promos about his backstory, because then, I think it becomes very relevant.

Ivan, I agree that footage of Kimbo’s street fights should not be used for promo purposes. You don’t want to glamorize street fights because it sends kids the wrong message. You don’t want people thinking they can get into a major MMA promotion by fighting in the street and putting it up on YouTube. If they need footage of Kimbo for promo purposes, show him in the gym working with Bas Rutten.

The only time I think it would be appropriate to show brief shots of his street fights is if they do any documentary-style promos about his backstory, because then, I think it becomes very relevant.

I'd like to defend Al Bernstein. First, he's one of the few hardcore boxing guys that is open-minded when it comes to MMA. Also, he was being a good company guy by pinch hitting per the request of Showtime. And for a guy whose first love is not MMA, Bernstein did a professional job on last night's telecast. Do I want to see Mauro back in the saddle for Nov. 10? Absolutely! And he will be back. But Bernstein didn't kill last night's telecast.
