UFC 80: Gabriel Gonzaga v. Fabricio Werdum?

Gabriel_GonzagaAccording to GracieMag.com, this could be the case:

The Carioca Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England.

As mentioned above, these two have fought in the past with Werdum knocking Gonzaga out early in the third round. It’s a pretty damn good fight, and if you wanna watch it, look no further than the MMA World League website. You can create a username and watch the fights for free on their channel. Also, Lyoto Machida vs. Stephan Bonnar is another interesting fight that can be viewed on the site.

Anyways, the only problem I have with Werdum making his return to the Octagon is he was just as boring as Andrei Arlovski was in their fight and he came out on the losing end of things. Why does he get a fight and Arlovski does not? I guess the obvious answer is Arlovski’s current contract situation, but giving Werdum a fight before Arlovski is just a slap in the face to “The Pitbull.”

Maybe we can just take this as a sign that the unjust punishment for that fight with Arlovski is over? And i must say, that fight wasnt THAT boring. I watched it again the other night and it wasnt anywhere near as bad as Gonzaga Jordan or Koscheck Sanchez.

It goes beg the question… who will Andrei get if they do work things out?
    Frank Mir? Vera?

Gonzaga was tooling Werdum until he gassed. Look for GG to avenge his loss.

Watching that fight from 2003, GG weighed in at 220 while Werdum hit the scales at 240. Interesting to note that now Gonzaga tips the scales at 250 while Werdum recently weighed in @ 230 against AA. That’s quite a shift. Gonzaga looks likes he naturally gotten bigger while Werdum may have toned down on the Hoids.

Is it right that a fighter should have to go this long between fights? April to February? That’s the length of a roid suspension! If the UFC can’t give a fighter an opportunity to build their record (and bank account) at least 3-4 times a year, then they shouldn’t keep them under such strict contracts. If this isn’t more evidence of Dana’s mismanagement of the UFC, I don’t know what. It may be simple supply and demand to sit on the product and ration it out to increase it’s value, but fighters have a short shelf-life. This type of control is the disrespect that Randy is talking about, IMHO.

Id rather see Vera vs CroCop .. Would be a good striking match hopefully and both have alot too prove ..

Gonzaga vs AA would be much better then Gabe vs Fabricio…

I thought Gonzaga and Arlovski would make more sense too. Seeing it was Gonzaga that took Arlovskis potential title shot. But i still reckon itll be a good fight, as unlike Werdums previous fight, Gonzaga wont be scared of his guard.

If Randy remains champ i think Randy’ll face Nog, and Sylvia will get Kongo. If Randy vacates then it appears Nog and Kongo and then Sylvia versus who? Surely not Arlovski again.

Sylvia could get CroCop or Lesnar .. Im betting Lesnar gets more of a can but maybe not ..

Ill assume they wont even risk Imes on Lesnar anymore after hes gogo gadget jujitsu. I think Lesnar will just get Antoni Hardonk so he can rack up his first win.

And i reckon Mir and Cro Cop will be good test for both of them.

That leaves Arlovski and Sylvia dateless

I’ll pick Werdum to win against GG via submission. They should bring AA back to fight Vera, that would be a sweet ass fight to see. If not then have AA fight Frank Mir.

I’m going to be rooting for GG on this match. I’m a little upset that Arlovski isn’t able to fight for almost 8 months now or whatever it is. Even though his last fight was a lackluster fight…he still won the fight. I think Arlovski will probably be fighting Cro-Cop in February…yep u heard it from me Cro-Cop vs Arlovski.

I don’t get why Andrei’s management team isn’t asking for a release from his contract, they’re totally robbing the dude of putting food on his table. Andrei also knows this isn’t the only fish pond now, the transition for a Cambo guy from Belarus to M-1 Global to take on a Cambo champ like Fedor would give M-1 instant credibility. Not only would it be an awesome match but it would be two Top 10 Heavyweights throwing leather for their first event (Way better then Jeff Monson IMHO). Is it possible to go against someone like the UFC for holding out on Andrei for this long. The dude is exciting (with the exception of his last two fights) and he has huge star power with MMA fans. He has the tools to be the champ, his biggest problem is between his ears.

Besides how can you not like a dude who wears fangs and is hooked up with a dam fine hottie? :D

Dude was living the “American Dream”, now he’s waiting in the wings. :P
