Frank Shamrock on Cung Le: “I would just smash him and ruin his progress.”
The ever controversial Frank Shamrock, in an interview with Nokaut.com, elaborates on why he thinks he’s a bad matchup for Cung Le at this point in his career:
Nokaut: Will you be facing Cung Le, or is that a fight that you are saving for later?
Frank: I think Cung Le needs some more time and experience. I don’t think it is a good fight right now because I would just smash him and ruin his progress. Everyone is pushing for Cung because he has been very exciting so far. I think it would be a waste of money and it would crush him when I crush him. I would like to wait till 2009 for that fight. I don’t really know who is on the horizon right now. Robbie Lawler’s name has been thrown around, but I am good with whoever they decide.
As cocky as Frank is, he’s probably right. A lot of people, including myself, doubted Shamrock in the fight with Phil Baroni and he made us all look like complete fools. He smashed Baroni thoroughly, even calling his shots at one point.
Cung Le is a great standup fighter, but the level of competition he’s faced and the lack of experience in the world of mixed martial arts are two things working against him. The sanshou clinic he put on against Tony Fryklund was an amazing thing to see, but Frank Shamrock is no Tony Fryklund.
Robbie Lawler is a much better fight for Shamrock and one that I would gladly pay to see.

Yeah, to borrow a Mike Goldberg comment, “Frank Shamrock is a master of submission.” He also doesnt have bad stand up and wrestling… so i reckon it would just be, engage, take down, pass guard, mount, arm bar, Who’s Cung Le?
“The sanshou clinic he put on against Tony Fryklund was an amazing thing to see…”
Anyone can put on an awesome clinic when they have a compliant partner.
This interview is over two weeks old.
And your point would be…?
Matt I’ll bet you $1,000 Cash that Shamrock doesn’t defeat Cung Le. Lets get the contract ready.
Dizzle,
Bring it on. Shamrock by vicious ground and pound, R1.
I doubt it. Noone has seen cung Lee’s ground game. I’m sure this might be the first fight that people iwll go “wow this guy isn’t anyone to mess with”
if the fight happens which i doubt it wil…we’ll find out. Just remember to PULL OUT YOUR CHECKBOOK before the fight.
I like Cung Le but he doesnt have ground game and Shamrock would exploit that. Enough said.
I am a big fan of both. Cung has great stand up skill, and take down skill. He just doesn’t know how to finish the fight, and give oponent far too many chances to recover. He has no idea what to do when he took his oponent down. No ground and pound, no submission attemp. I am Vietnamese, and I should support Cung. To be honnest, Shamprock skill is way to good for Cung right now. We all see how Shamprock pick Phil B. appart with his stand up.
Cung Le will be submissed by Shamprock.
Frank is just being a smart business man. He knows that Cung Le is a growing name in mma and wants him to continue to build popularity and experience so that when they do fight in 2009 more people will buy the ppv. Whatever it takes to bring more money and notoriety to mma and Strikeforce is all good.
Frank is more than likely correct. But this will be a very exciting fight. Two fighters with well rounded skills, true MMA, not just one demensional. I am a fan of both fighters, and i cannot be in favor for one or the other.
Personally, I think Le’s been keeping the extent of his ground skills pretty secret. There’s no doubt that he will try to keep the fight off the ground, but who really knows what he’s capable of once down?
Well, we’ll see this weekend.
How could Shamrock get close to Cung Le? Cung would just kick him out or take him down before he can wrap his arms around Cung.
Um, what was that you were saying about Cung Le and his MMA skills?
wow, looks like adam owes dizzle a nice chunk o’ change!
wow, dizzle is the man.
Never underestimates CungLe’s wrestling skills, it ain’t easy to take him down to the ground/ unless he want to play the ground game, otherwise your ass will be end up on the ground all by yourself like FrankShamrock
It’s kind of amazing seeing how Cung Le easily throw Frank Shamrock on the ground and then walk away. If Cung Le get some training on submission and ground & pound, he’ll be a much better fighter.
Sticking to the fight…which was excellent. Frank wanted to stand and prove he could strike effectively and ended up getting his arm broken. If this was a ground and pound match I believe it would have proved a much less interesting fight. Looking forward to a rematch.
