Serra’s thoughts on Hughes vs. GSP at UFC 79
From UFC.com:
“I can’t believe the position this puts me in,” said the New Yorker, who won the title from St-Pierre and was looking forward to settling the score with the man he has been coaching against and trading barbs with on the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Hughes. “I’m actually rooting for Matt Hughes so I can beat his ass.”
I bet it just burns Serra up inside that he has to root for Hughes in order to get the fight that he wants. Karma’s a bitch.

Man what a raw deal for Serra. I guess he’ll just beat GSP again
Hughes-GSP III is EXACTLY the fight Serra wants to see. Stylistically, Hughes is a horrendous matchup for him (Serra).
‘The Terror’ will be hoping that Georges wins this interim title fight and that Hughes announces his retirement
I think this benefits Serra the most because he was going to have to beat Hughes and then GSP. Now he only has to fight one of them in the immediate future. While I think he can make a good fight (and of course have a chance), I don’t see him matching up preferably to either fighter.
I have seen fighters fight with injurys i.e. Tim Silvia (Back), Karo fought with a broken hand, the list goes on and on. Serra is a wuss and all that talk of beating Hughes and then backing out of the fight about a month ahead of the ppv just shows everyone that he is a punk ass and is a shit talker!
Being that Richard is a professional fighter who has undergone numerous injuries in his storied career, he is the right person to be passing judgement
This logic doesn’t allow anyone to ever pull out of fights.
karma, my friend, is bullshit
I am not even sure what an “interim title” is. Does that mean that whenever Serra is physically able to return he gets an immediate shot at the interim champ? What if he still wants to fight Hughes? Couldn’t the UFC make that fight happen and simply call it a non-title bout? I, for one, would rather see that fight take place before any rematch with GSP (assuming Georges prevails next month). The UFC has hyped the Hughes-Serra unbelievably and I think they owe it to all their TUF fans.
Matt Serrra a year ago wasnt even a top 20 ww and he wins the show in kinda unimpressive fashion and somehow gets a title shot. He then scores the biggest fluke win ever. Serra against Hughes would have been controlled the whole fight until Hughes finished him or won a lay and pray decision. If he got a rematch against Gsp hed probably get hurt really bad, just cause of how good gsp is and how bad he must hate Serra. Serra getting injured only delays the inevetible which is that he is a fluke ww and is gonna get his ass kicked and then drop to lightweight were he is a real championship, top 5 contender!!!!!!!!
Devin,
It may surprise you but I suspect that GSP harbors no ill feelings toward Serra. St. Pierre is not one of those trash-talking, in-your-face type of fighters who thinks he has to hate his opponent in order to prepare for a fight. I have always found him to be most respectful of his competition in the ring (both in his pre-fight and post-fight interviews).
I am not a Serra nut-hugger but I always wonder what people mean when they pronounce a fight a “fluke” victory. Are you saying that Serra did not not mean to connect when he threw that right hand shot that caught GSP? Was it an accident when he absolutely swarmed Georges and did not given any time to recover? If that is the criteria, then I guess any one-punch KO is a fluke. I suppose then that Rampage got a fluke victory over Liddell.
To me a fluke victory would be something like a fighter slipping in the ring and then getting caught as he tried to stand up. Or perhaps when a fighter who is way behind on the scorecard cuts their opponent with an elbow and then the fight gets stopped by the ringside doctor. But whenever a fighter cracks you in the head with a punch thrown with evil intent – that’s no fluke! That’s a beatdown.
We may never know how the Hughes-Serra fight would have played out but I sure hope we get to see it someday. I would think the UFC is vested in making that fight happen, since they devoted an entire TUF season to playing up the rivalry. Thge outcome you foresee is a possibility. But then again, maybe Matt keeps the fight standing up and is able to score another “fluke” victory. You never know, this is a crazy sport, indeed.
