I didn’t see the latest edition of TUF until last night. The fact that Hughes has the two fighters in the finale says something about his coaching, or at least his ability to evaluate talent. At the end of the show, one of his guys gets the contract, and despite all his trash talk, Serra won’t get into the ring with him. It ain’t how you start, it’s how you finish, and Hughes looks better than Serra at this point.

I think there is a point about Matt Hughes some of us who are critiques of his overlook.

Whether you like Hughes or not, I think everyone can appreciate what he has done in this sport and how he has conducted himself in his personal life.

True, he does talk trash before fights and says things that are unprofessional (his comments about Canada before his second fight with GSP being a prime example), but with so many fighters being womanizers and party animals, it is commendable that he is a devout christian, a loving father and husband.

Although I will be rooting for GSP on December 29th, I hope more fighters emulate Hughes’ clean lifestyle. Whoever wins on December 29, I know they will both conduct themselves with class after the fight.

slakdawg, hughes is being respectful now because he got his ass handed to him. georges has a great story that even the ‘greatest of all times’ can appreciate. rewind to the pre-fight mind games he was trying to wage on georges before the last fight, and it’s the same sort of smug garbage he does with everyone he has a problem with.

this is how matt serra works: he straight up tells you what he thinks about you, doesn’t sugar coat it, and he doesn’t care what you think. and whoever said he talks behing people’s back but never to their face…huh? he didn’t have too much trouble telling hughes how he felt at the start of the show, he didn’t have too much trouble giving laimon a piece of his mind…etc..

this is how matt hughes works: he perceives he is on the moral high ground, so he can’t very well call serra a ‘dick’, so instead he goes about insulting him every chance he gets in a roundabout and extremely lame manner. see his blogs and you’ll get the jist…alot of things that frankly don’t even make sense eg-calling serra’s coaching ability into question as a result of war machine, hightower, etc. shitting in the toilet. etcetera…

serra, despite his consistent played out bashing of hughes, generally seems like a good guy, down to earth, and very concerned about his students. hughes, despite his faith and general good attitude, slips up all the time with incredibly smug comments, to the point where he’s almost more smug than not. it’s pretty easy to see that serra’s comments are waaaaay under his skin and he’s pretty damn choked about it, even though he tries to play it off like he doesn’t care much.

as for the stuff with arroyo…it seems to me that he’s likely dissing the kid simply because he’s apart of the serra entity he so badly wants to lash out against.

For all the talk about Hughes being arrogant (probably is, but so are the fighter pilots I work for in the Air Force) and condescending to his opponents, he sure was gracious when speaking about GSP. I wish I could find the link, but he said how great of a fighter GSP was and that he was a class-act, and went on to say that it was an honor to fight him. Again, since I couldnt find the link I am para-phrasing, but the point is Hughes isnt an ass to everyone, just guys who run him down on national televison and print media (hello, Matt Serra).

I became a huge Serra fan after this season. He seems like a great guy who really cares about all the fighters as individuals. I didn’t see any of that from Captain Smug.

Honestly, has either of the Matts come across as anything but a hypocrite this season? Perhaps it’s just my bias, but both of them appear to be hypocrites and windbags (though with their own idiosyncrasies).

Personally I don’t enjoy trash talking. Obviously to each their own, but I pay to see these athletes compete in this specific athletic forum, not to see who would win in a debate.

I never understand why people get upset when a fighter is a jerk. Where not playing cricket here folks. These guys are smashing each other to pieces when they’re not busy trying to twist each others bones in the wrong direction.

It’s always entertaining to listen to guys talk trash. It’s more entertaining in MMA to watch them back it up. If they don’t, they come off like clowns. Since Serra isn’t going to fight Hughes, and probably never will, he’s the one with the floppy shoes and big red nose.
