Matt Lindland and Dana White are speaking

From Yahoo! Sports:

Lindland worked the corner of Chael Sonnen in Sonnen’s unsuccessful WEC middleweight title bid against Paulo Filho last week in Las Vegas. After the bout, Lindland said he’d spoken to White about returning to fight in the UFC.

White said he is “not sure” of whether Lindland will return. In a text message, he wrote, “He told me he wants to come back, and I haven’t thought about it at all.”

Matt Lindland is one of the top middleweights in the world and would be a welcome addition to a division that is sorely in need of talent. He’s another guy that could possibly give Anderson Silva a run for his money, fighting out of the same camp as the man Silva will be facing in March, Dan Henderson.

While some will label Lindland as a boring fighter, he’s got skills for days, especially when it comes to wrestling and top control. Lindland, arguably, has the best top control in modern mixed martial arts.

It doesn’t sound like much at this point, but the fact that they’re talking is good. Boring or not, someone of Lindland’s caliber belongs in the UFC.

  • I would like to see him back in the UFC. I don’t think that Lindland is as boring as he used to be. Even if he is, who cares? The point of fighting is to see who is the best fighter not who is the most exciting. If a sub-par fighter is boring then get rid of them but when you have a world class fighter like Lindland you need to look past how “fan friendly” he is.

I want him back but for anyone who needs a refresher what some of his last fight before he left…brutal.

The more top fighters you can have the better. It just makes the rankings, wins, and (for some) titles more legitimate.

Is Lindland supposed to feel honored that Zuffa will even talk to him? Or are they still not interested in him because, talent be damned, he’s too boring in their eyes? Zuffa is likely going to try to use the “sign with us or you’ll be irrelevant” approach that they have used on Fedor and everyone else.

If the conversation with Dana came at the WEC event, maybe Lindland was asking to fight Filho, who has looked extremely beatable in that promotion. I’d like to see that fight.

It has nothing to do with his style. Lindland likes and wants to be a private contractor. Zuffa wants company employees. Just two different philosophies when it comes to contracts. Nothing wrong with either approach imho but I’m sure Lindland is starting to re-assess his pov now that CrapDog has fucked him over.

Imagine how different Tuf 4 would have been if Lindland had been able to get out of his WFA contract. He could easily be the UFC champion atm and making some serious $$.

rln, that has nothing to do with why he was released in the first place and why Zuffa’s attitude towards Matt Lindland has always been, “Matt who?”

I think Lindland is a good fighter, boring at times, but hey, they resigned Yushin Okami…:P

As for the middleweight divison being boring, according to the 5oz fighter rankings, UFC does have 5 of the top 10 currently under contract. They can’t be doing that bad, I think Bisping will add some fire to the mix…never know if they might find a sparkplug from the next new season either.

Like I say, Lindland would be a good grab but I wouldn’t break the bank for him. What happened with the Almedia signing anyway?
