Serra confirms rematch with St. Pierre in April

January 5, 2008 by Sam Caplan

UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra confirmed Friday that he will be defending his title against Georges St. Pierre sometime in April in Montreal, writes Mike Chiapetta of NBCSports.com:

Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre will meet for the UFC welterweight title during an April event in Montreal, Serra confirmed to NBCSports.com on Friday.

The April UFC event in Montreal is tentatively scheduled for April 19 at the Bell Centre.
The article also confirms rumors that Serra’s injured back, which prevented him from making a scheduled title defense against Matt Hughes at UFC 79 on Dec. 29, is improving:

The Long Island native told NBCSports.com’s John Moody that his back has been rapidly improving and is excited about defending the championship, albeit in St. Pierre’s hometown.

Will be worth the price of a ticket just to experience the home town reaction to GSP. Georges gets the loudest reaction of any fighter, and in his home turf, this should be intense to say the least. It will be like the last 30 seconds of Couture/Sylvia round 5, except for the ENTIRE fight. Cant wait!!!!

No matter what the outcome of this fight, I’m willing to bet Serra will be able to make it more of a war than Hughes did.

Well, GSP showed his character by not taking the BS belt. I’m with Tommy…. the home turf reaction is going to pump up GSP’s already awesome energy. I for one, can’t wait!! You know, I’ve always liked Serre but GSP is going places in UFC !
