5 Oz. Exclusive: UFC deal with Takanori Gomi falls through

A potential deal between Takanori Gomi and the UFC has fallen through, FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) has learned.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com first became aware of the story when a source close to Frankie Edgar revealed that the lightweight contender had been offered and accepted a potential bout vs. Gomi. The fight fell through after the UFC was unable to secure a contract with PRIDE’s final reigning lightweight champion.

There is no word as to why a deal with Gomi was unable to be completed and whether there’s a chance that talks between both sides will resume in the future.

    yep, that pretty much blows.

But – why in the hell would they have put him against Edgar for his first UFC fight? I’ve been scratching my head at some of the matchmaking lately. Were they planning on showcasing Gomi’s standup vs a guy that would have laid on him for 15 minutes? Matching Sokodjou vs Machida was a questionable way to introduce a fighter, but this would have been just plain dumb.

In the classic Pride to UFC model, they give the Pride guy a first fight against a well known UFC name like Rampage-Eastman or Silva-Leben, before an immediate title shot. The Gomi-Edgar matchup seems to fit this profile.

Doesn’t there have to be a potential deal in the first place for one to fall through? Probably never was one in the first place.

    Here’s probably what happened:

Joe Silva: Hey, you willing to fight Gomi if we can sign him?

    Frankie Edgar: Sure thing, boss.

[5 minutes later, on the phone]
Joe Silva: Hey Gomi, you want to be in the UFC? How about being laid on for
15 minutes by another dude? I have just the guy for ya!

Gomi: [something in Japanese]…K-1…[more Japanese]…waiting for more offers…[more Japanese]

Joe Silva: Fuckin’ Japs! Yo Dana, Gomi is afraid. Fuck him. We don’t need him. All the PRIDE guys suck anyway, the UFC is not like Japan.

  • Grape Knee High says:

cyphron, it probably has nothing to do with a #1 ranking, that I’m sure he’s not even aware of. You think he reads MMA Weekly? Probably not.

The real reason is money. What would the UFC pay Gomi? I’ll go out on a limb and say they might go 35k/35k at most. And he won’t get much in the way of sponsorships, either. To top it off, while the JPY/USD exchange rates normally hover around 120-130 JPY per $1, the USD has in the past year gone down the shitter in terms of purchasing power and $1 only buys you ~106 JPY.

Granted, he’s not hugely popular in Japan, either, or K-1 would have snapped him up with a big contract as soon as he became a free agent. However, my guess is that K-1′s package (given total compensation including potential sponsorship deals) might actually be less than the UFC’s total offer (with sponsorship).

So I would guess Gomi is probably just figuring out for himself, whether it is better to continue to fight in Japan for cheaper and possibly have a longer term career and post-career opportunities, or fight in the UFC for slightly more money as “that little Jap guy with the big head who KO’s people”. I’m sure he realizes that huge paydays would await him as a headliner, but I’m sure he’s realistic enough to realize that is unlikely unless he steps up his game and intensity (and figures out how to beat BJ Penn).

Fighters who win demands big money. If Gomi doesn’t think he can dominate in the UFC, there’s no point in signing.

I think Edgar is just as good as Nick Diaz. If Gomi loses in his first fight against Frank Edgar, don’t you think his stock will drop? If Gomi is going to dominate in the UFC, then there is absolutely no reason why he wouldn’t sign the deal that gives him the best money. Is there any reason to think that he can hang with BJ Penn at this point? BJ Penn is no Nick Diaz, that’s for sure.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Zack says:

Edgar is probably much better than Ishida, and would likely beat Gomi by smart decision, ie, by laying on him and taking away Gomi’s strengths. To be honest, I wouldn’t rank Gomi in the top 5 LW in the UFC right now.

Would you bet money that Gomi would win his first fight in the UFC against the likes of Griffin, Guida, Sherk, Penn, Edgar? I wouldn’t.

Gomi is smart not to come to the UFC if he has other options because the lightweight bracket is stacked, and any one of the top 5 would give him a tough fight and probably beat him. If he can make decent money based on his Pride rep against easier competition, why wouldn’t he? Sure, the UFC belt means a lot, but he’s not a serious contender.

    You guess a lot.

And to comment #24, Rob you must not have been paying attention to whats been happening in MMA lately. I will help bring you up to speed; this whole “I own you” mentality is the reason the UFC doesn’t have the two best heavyweights in the game right now (hence blowback). It also seems to be (read closely, partly) a reason why certain fighters are wanting to get out of the UFC (arlovski) or don’t want to sign with them at all (kang). Exclusivity is not the ONLY reason that gomi is a commodity right now. Maybe it has to do with his talent and his appeal to die hards. There is a general shift for major fighters right now who want be out from under the control of a major promotion. Just because some guy doesn’t want to fight exclusively for you doesn’t mean that you can’t make money off of promoting him on your card.

With that said, I do not think he could become a Champion in the UFC LW class. He’s good, no doubt about it. But, I would not pick him to beat BJ, Sherk, Joe Daddy, Ken Flo or even Nate Diaz. I also think Marcus would defeat him in the UFC as well.

Maybe he’s better suited for the WEC? Only time will tell.

I think the UFC is trying to screw all the fighters it can. Maybe they are trying to make Edgar look like a super hero if he beat Taknori Gomi, that would promote their rising star, and then make Gomi look like an Idiot and ruin his stature in MMA. The UFC always looks for its best interests and doesnt really worry about the fighters interests, like CroCop or Soukudju Or a Gomi I dont really know what their strategy is but I do know alot of fighters dont want to come to the UFC anymore because of their management and Dana White. Gomi doesnt even like the UFC for what to come over possibly loose and then his career is ruined and everyone to make a big deal about the loss and start saying, Oh is his career over.

Atom, I’ve addressed this in the past but I’ll address it again.

This site doesn’t run for free. We have bills to pay. I brought in Matt Cava to handle the business side of 5 Oz. so I can focus on editorial. As majority owner, I can veto any ad I want. Personally, I don’t think an MMA-derivative with no rules is good for the sport. I’m not the only writer here who has an issue with Rio Heroes. But I don’t see a need to veto my site administrator’s and prevent him from doing the job I’ve asked him to do.

Let me ask you this, when you read a newspaper is it ad free? When you watch the news is it commercial-free? Is an anchor’s integrity called into question because he or she is delivering news on a broadcast with paid advertisers? I’m a professional; I can do my job and not let others influence my opinion. As the publisher of this site, I don’t legislate any of the opinions the writers who contribute here.

We’re just one of many sites that accept sponsorship from Rio Heroes. How many of the others have refrained from speaking out and just pretended like the ads weren’t on their site?

So what’s worse; sites accepting advertising from Rio Heroes and not speaking out, or a site not allowing its advertisers and sponsors to influence its opinion?

Kind of funny he targets us even though we speak out but directs almost no criticism towards any other sites. We were without question the focus of his smearing. Are his criticisms sincere or based on whether he anticipates someone can help him in this industry? I find it funny that the guy knows precise stats of how much traffic we’ve sent to his site. If we mentioned him more and he was getting 10% of his traffic from us and not 5%, would he treat us with kid gloves like he does others?

And has he ever said whether he was approached by Rio Heroes? Of course, he can’t accept the sponsorship now. But what if they had contacted them at the start?

“Is an anchor’s integrity called into question because he or she is delivering news on a broadcast with paid advertisers? I’m a professional; I can do my job and not let others influence my opinion.”

Sam maybe you should pick up “Manufacturing Consent” by Noam Chomsky and Ed herman. Also there is the “The Media Monopoly” which is very good.

These books are detailed studies of the media and how they ARE influenced by advertisers. Corporate Media (any media that takes revenue from advertisers) has an inherent flaw; they can’t bite the hand that feeds them. Its not monolithic, but it definitely sets boundries on what you can and can’t say. To suggest other wise is to court ignorance.
