Meet TUF 7′s Aaron Meisner (video)

I’m trying to round up as much video as I can find on these new TUF 7 contestants that are being announced so that I can share it with all of you. Check out this video of Aaron Meisner, one of the first contestants that FiveOuncesofPain.com announced over the weekend. It features some of his muay thai fights as well as some serious devastation in his MMA fights. Can’t wait to watch this guy, as he seems like a fantastic prospect.

nice clinch work and good knees, but the video doesn’t let u know how his ground game is…

  • Sam Cupitt says:

Yeah d-train I think that may actually tell you somethign about his ground game…

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Adam Morgan says:

He’s only 3-0 in MMA and all three fights have ended by KO or TKO in the first round. No one’s been able to get him to the ground.

    i suppose that’s a good thing.

The clips look good, but part of that is the editing. He moves straight forward, has virtually no head movement, and carries his hands too low. A striker with more boxing in his background would give him a hard time, I think.

Should be a pretty close run season. In other seasons there always appears to be a couple of fighters who just know are going to go the distance but I haven’t really noticed one hear yet though.

  • Sam Caplan says:

Mike, I really don’t think you know what you’re talking about here. Meisner is one of the most technical Muay Thai strikers on the East Coat. Yes, his power is tremendous but his technique is also excellent. You can’t use too many boxing fundamentals in MMA. I completely disagree with you saying he keeps his hands low. I used to train Muay Thai at Philly MMA/Daddis FC and that was the number one thing they drilled into my head (keep your hands up). But in MMA, you CANNOT keep your hands as high as you would in boxing. I had trained boxing years ago and normally hold my hands up high. When I sparred MMA I would get taken down at will. You need to drop your hands a little in order to be in a position to defend a takedown. When Aaron fought Chris Reedy he knew he was going to take on a wrestler who was looking for the takedown. Reedy was also normally a welterweight and couldn’t match his power. He probably dropped his hands to anticipate the takedown.

As far as head movement, I don’t see that being a problem either. You simply can’t have too much head movement in Muay Thai. If you dip, you might catch a knee.

Aaron is relative new to BJJ, but as Adam said, his sprawl is tremendous. And he’s getting great ground training. Philly MMA has a lot of great grapplers and Aaron has also done some work at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United with Jared Weiner and Wilson Reis.

Bottom line, Meisner is a dangerous fighter who is one of the top middleweight prospects around. The TUF 7 cast looks stacked but one way or another, I bet Aaron walks away with a UFC contract.

  • Jeremy says:

Definitely one of the guys I am excited to see on this show. His knees look great and devastatingly effective. Aaron should get some good work in on this show because of the really good wrestlers in Bradley and Dollaway, and then the good experienced fighters like Dante Rivera, Mike Brown and Tim Credeur. I think guys like Meisner, Dollaway and Bradley are the type they need on this show because they are the ones that could really develop quickly from the experience.

Can’t wait to see how Meisner does on the show!

  • Mike Wolfe says:

    Sam–

“Meisner is one of the most technical Muy Thai strikers on the East Coast.” That was part of my point. Most such strikers that I’ve seen move straight in and straight out with their bodies in a comparatively rigid, upright stance. More effective MMA strikers maintain good head movement and use different angles. I guess the best examples I can think of are the fighters from MFS like Fisher and Sylvia. Different weight classes, of course, but their style is not traditional Muy Thai, and it’s hard to argue with their successes.

  • Derek B. says:

Sorry to say it but Meisner’s HL didn’t impress me at all. I cannot agree that he is one of the best Muy Thai strikers from the east coast. I thought he had great leg kicks and pretty good Clinch Knee’s. I just didn’t see any Elbows thrown from him in his HL.

If you want to see a real Muy Thai fighter you need to check out Paul Daley…He blows Meisner’s technique out of the water any day of the week.

  • Jiu-Jitsu Guy says:

He looked sloppy if you ask me. All he did was throw predictable punches and ugly kicks. His clinch was nice on that one guy, but the guy he was fighting was not protecting himself and just taking it.

I think the quality of fighters is going down. Too many stand up fools who think they’re the man. I know plenty who would have this guy on the ground in 30 seconds and submit him. No problem.

I like watching the show, but this is obviously not the best talent available. Some of you fail to realize that some martial artists think this is a joke and will not participate. MMA is evolving and they are waiting for the real show to start, or they will simply refrain from participating, as they do no want to identify themselves with a bunch of meat heads who have weak records and marginal skill sets.

If you don’t believe me, why did the show have that stupid comedian guy on there last time? Does that represent the sport well? Everyone knew, including the fighters on the show, that he was just there for a laugh. PATHETIC.

This guy is horrible, in my opinion.

  • cyphron says:

Jiu-Jitsu guy is too good for TUF. Please show us some of your superior techniques on Youtube. I would love to compare your superiority to these inferior TUF fighters.

It’s much easier to criticize rather than actually… ya know, do it.

I already have a career and my title is doctor. Have a nice day.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • cyphron says:

Your criticism was worded very strongly so I thought you had some skills. I didn’t know you have doctorate in Jiu-Jitsu. Is that equivalent to a red belt?

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • well rounded in all aspects of mma guy says:

god jiu jitsu guy needs to get off his pedastal and stop fighter bashing, my guess is hes some nerd with a doctorate degree which makes him better than everyone, and somehow that doctorate gave all the knowledge in the world about mma

  • Rich says:

    well,
he didn’t look too bad towards the end of the video.

he had some pretty good knees.

and i like the body kicks he threw at that guy.

but at the beginning of the video… in the kickboxing fight… he looked tired… and unenthused… and he WAS throwing sloppy kicks..

i don’t know all the fighters from the east coast… but i can’t see him being one of the best in muay thai over there.

at least, not from this video..

when i’m thinkin’ of the best in Muay Thai, i’m thinking of the knees and elbows of KenFlo, Vera, Daley… and i just didn’t see that in the video…

    but he does look promising..

  • Jiu-Jitsu Guy says:

You people making this personal is rather annoying. I have a career and I train in jiu-jitsu as a hobby. You won’t get anything more from me.

I’m sorry some of you fail to realize that the UFC and TUF don’t have the best fighters in the world representing martial arts. I also have a problem with performance enhancing drugs, which is obvious.

I take it you have nothing else to offer other than personally insulting me, as your brains cannot come up with anything beyond that. Looks like I win.

As I said, this guy is a chump compared to a ton of other fighters. Sorry you disagree, but his skills looks mediocre at best. Look for his first REAL OPPONENT to send him to the ground and into chokehold heaven.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Jiu-Jitsu Guy says:

Funny how you equate the title doctor to no skills. Last time I checked there are many doctors with black belts in jiu-jitsu. Sorry, guys like me try to be the best they can be at everything, while wimps like you sit back and watch.

Enjoy the view. It is more fun from the driver’s seat. Have fun in the back.

Sam – you have your very own old-timey JJ troll now. These guys can be an endless source of amusement – let us all get our laughs in and drop the troll hammer after he finally melts down.

  • ATMstar says:

I personally know Aaron. He is not on the show and does not consider himself to be a top fighter tho he is far above average. As far as JJguy goes…. i would’nt call Aaron a chump

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Jiu-Jitsu Guy says:

No problem. I can go elsewhere. I don’t respect a bunch of writers and wannabes commenting anyway. You have no clue.

I’ll be training tonight with the best while you suck your thumb. Bye.

  • Sam Caplan says:

LOL JJG. Not only have I trained, I’ve actually fought. Can you say the same thing? Do you need any assistance removing your foot out of your mouth?

  • Paul says:

    i train in bjj

i’m not gonna lie, no way i’m steeping in a ring with a striker like that.

its called MMA, not a bjj tourney….the goal is to be well rounded

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Sam Caplan says:

JJG is a poser. I seriously doubt he really trains. If he wants to prove me wrong, he can take a picture of himself in his Gi (with his belt) in front his computer with 5 Oz. on the screen.

  • MMA_dude says:

ATMstar, Why do we have all these reports that he IS on the show? Did something fall through? I was really looking forward to seeing him flex his skills against some of the better prospects.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • pete says:

i know aaron personally as well, you cant see his bjj skills because he never needs to use them because he has a amazing clinche and his ground game defense is also incredibly strong. He has many other (full) fights on youtube to prove he is a top contender not just this video.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • ATMstar says:

I know that he is getting major knee surgery this week and has a 9 month recovery time. so there is no way he can be on the show

Aaron Meisner was chosen for the final field of 32 candidates for the upcoming seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter. He departed for the show and Las Vegas on January 24. Those are the FACTS.

  • MMA_dude says:

Rock on, Sam!!!! I don’t know who to believe. I train at Daddis and haven’t seen him recently. But why would he be bluffing? And btw, Sam, I respect your knowledge immensly. i just want clarification. I was hearing reports that he blew out his knee which he also stated on his own myspace page.

    WAR AARON!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t think so – his coach just told me. You can see the brace on his bad knee during the fight clips though.

  • Pete A. says:

Forrest Griffin mentioned he was dominating until he bent his knee akwardly and after that he wasnt the same. I talked to Aaron after he got home and i knew what to expect for the fight. He told me he dominated the whole fight which you could obvisouly see on the show and you even hear Griffin say it. He will be back trust.
