Exclusive: Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard set to take place at UFC Fight Night 13 in April

edgar_UFC78A lightweight match between standout wrestlers Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard has been signed to be added to the UFC Fight Night 13 card, Edgar has revealed exclusively to FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com).

UFN 13 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 in Broomfield, Colorado and will feature matches between Kenny Florian vs. Joe Lauzon, Houston Alexander vs. James Irvin, Stephan Bonnar vs. Matt Hamill, Thiago Alves vs. Karo Parisyan, Marcus Aurelio vs. Spencer Fisher, and Sami Schiavo vs. Clay Guida.

Edgar, 8-0, last competed at UFC 78 in Newark, NJ this past November, when he recorded a unanimous decision over Fisher.

Edgar revealed that he anticipates a wrestling war between the two. He also said that he believes he could get to showcase his jiu-jitsu skills, as he anticipates ending up on his back vs. Maynard.

The New Jersey-native plans to spend some time in California training for the fight and will work with Dave Camirillo at the American Kickboxing Academy in March.

Maynard, a product of Randy Couture’s Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, appeared on the fifth season of Spike TV’s “Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show. Like Edgar, Maynard is also undefeated (4-0) with his last win coming against Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23.

I just realized that Karo is a little deep on the card. He is at least out of the top two fights of the night and this isn’t even a PPV. Is that the place for a fighter who has a title shot coming up?

This seems like a huge step up for Maynard, and doesn’t really further Edgar’s move towards a title shot. Wonder what the thinking was on this one.

  • Dkit says:

I agree with Mike, It seems like it could be a great stepping stone for Maynard but almost a step backwards for Edgar. I think it also sets up a possible match between Edgar and the winner of Lauzon/Florian if Edgar wins though.

    i agree w/ Mike,

Maynard hasn’t fought anyone big yet.

and Edgar has fought some of the top LW’s … and won..

this is a really weird matchup..

Maynard’s a big guy… he could get the win.. no doubt about that..

I can’t believe Maynard gets a shot at Edgar before Huerta. Seems like a risky fight for Edgar if the UFC’s building him up. Maynard’s not great, but he has a fairly decent chance at anyone I think.

This is such bullshit. TUF losers get better fights than the winner, Nate Diaz is stuck fighting Alvin Robinson while Gray gets to fight the # 3 contender…hmm makes a lot of sense

But, the UFC, Zuffa, and D.W., are committed to bringing us the best fights?
With the stable of fighters that they have, there is no excuse for this. Maynard has had only one descent showing in the UFC on top of a real bad one, so as good as he is, Edgar deserves better.

  • Matt C. says:

The style of this fight, wrestler vs wrestler, could make for a good matchup. Maynard is tough coming out of Xtreme Couture. Edgar should be able to outclass him in all aspects.

I like the previously stated comment that this is a setup for Edgar/Florian.

The winner of Edgar/Florian takes on Stevenson or possibly Sherk/Penn.

stevenson won’t be taking on any no.1 contenders any time soon…

he’s gotta work his way back up.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

If Edgar loses, you’d really have confusion about who’s next in line after Sherk and Penn fight. It probably won’t matter. No disrespect to Maynard, but on paper Edgar has to be the prohibitive favorite.

These matchups look great. This could turn out to be a great card, with more potential then some recent ppv’s.

Are you kidding me? Anyone that thinks Maynard has a chance at beating Edgar is a moron! Do you think Maynard would even have chance at beating Spencer Fisher or Tyson Griffin? Even though a blind squirell finds a nut once in while, I am surprised at the UFC making this fight. Mark Bocek is on the UFC 83 card against Mac Danzig, that would have been more of a battle for Frankies warm up fight on the way to a title shot in late 08.

Make no mistake folks, this is nothing more than a 2008 warm up fight for Frankie Edgar. So stop dry-humpin’ your Maynard fan-club posters and start making sense.

  • Devin Miller says:

Good fight, Maynard is an up and comer and could end up the best to come out of TUF 5. He was smashing Diaz till he got caught. He also could be one of the top 2 or 3 most dominate wrestlers in the lightweight division when he hits his prime. But Maynard has about a year or so before hes ready to be a real contender. When it comes to Frank Edgar, this guy could be a future world champ. I believe the only disadvantage he has is Maynard is bigger but it wont matter much. This fight will be fought standing when there wrestling cancles each others. Edgar by 2nd round tko, then he gets the #1 contender fight.

levi…shut the hell up. Why are people bitching about this fight. This is a fight card thats free if some of u forgot. Who cares if gray should be fighting someone whose not a top contender. This fight is happening because maynard has put on 3 really good fights in the ufc.

anyway i think maynards gonna take it cuz hes had so few fights and he looks better in each one.His stand up is solid and hes got the wrestling. This is probly gonna get fight of the night i know i cant wait.

    Maynard: “I wasn’t knocked out” …”No Joe, I’m not a looser”…
    Uh yes you are…
Look, I am not trying to say Maynard doesnt have potential. This is just not the right time for this level of fight for him. Who cares if it’s free or not, ultimately we all want to see fights that are competitve and between fighters that have comparible skill levels. Ken Flo vs. The Answer and J Lau vs. Cry Maynard would have been a more fitting set up in April. I think the letters to the fighters just got mixed up in the mail and when Dana finally realized that it matched up incorrectly, it was too late to change it!
So you think that Cry is going to win because he has so few fights? I haven’t heard that one before!
Fight of the Night? Come on now Matt, Knockout of the Night…more likely!

Gray Maynard VS BJ PENN That would be a great story line after he puts a spanking on stanky edgar like Randy did to tito. Edgar is not ready for the b!tch slappin that Maynard is gonna do to him. Edgar is a farce, a clown if you will.

IT IS REAL HARD TO TAKE A GUY SERIOUS, CALLING A PROFESSIONAL FIGHTER A CLOWN, WITH A NAME LIKE DADDY FRESH. MUST BE AN EARLY 80’S RAPPER THAT HASN’T GROWN UP OR GOT A REAL JOB. FRANKIE IS GONNA BEAT THE $HIT OUT OF GREY BECAUSE HE DOESN’T DESERVE TO FIGHT HIM, SENDING GRAY BACK TO THE MIDWEST TO FARM AND PICK LOTS OF CORN. FRANKIE IS GONNA KEEP IT MOVING TOWARDS A TITLE SHOT.

Frankie is gona win this fight because I dont think Gray is gona be able to stay with Frankies pace. Frankie is always coming forward and is a cardio machine. After he wins this he should get a number one contendership fight.
