Could Jardine and Silva be in the works?

February 4, 2008 by Gary Herman

At the UFC 81 press conference, Dana White came very close to announcing who Wanderlei Silva’s next opponent would be - stopping short at the last second per Joe Silva’s urging.

One thing White did confirm though was when the match-up will take place.

Wanderlei Silva will be fighting on the May card,” White said.

Earlier in the evening, I spoke with Keith Jardine. Jardine stated the following about his future:

The UFC wants me to have a high profile big fight - a main event quality fight. So, it should be somebody really good - hopefully in May,” said Jardine.

Looking at the list of potential opponents for Jardine in May, I can only see one fighter that is not busy who fits the profile of being a main event or co-main event fight. That is Wanderlei Silva. The fact that Silva is also scheduled to be fighting in May appears to make the match-up all the more likely.

Jardine and Silva would make for an excellent battle. For Jardine, a victory would have to put him in position to challenge Forrest Griffin if (and that is a very big if) Griffin defeats Rampage Jackson for the UFC light heavyweight championship. For Silva, he will have the opportunity to be at the top of another UFC card with an opponent he is guaranteed to make an exciting fight with.

This will be a war…hopefully Wandy can pull this one out.

    That would be sweet…….

    Jardine vs Wanderlei
    Liddell vs Shogun

Both fights are about the same time and IF BOTH Liddell and Jardine win, they can have the rematch for chance at title. I dont think it would be fair to give Liddell the automatic title shot if he beats Shogun, since Jardine had already beaten him*especially if he beats Wand).

Cant wait. Some good fights up and coming

Jardine shouldnt have the reach advantage that Liddell did and should be roughly Silva’s size. Let the kneeing begin!

Sam, I think you’re going to be in for a surprise if you think Jardine is as small as Silva. Wanderlei is the probably the shortest (and smallest) LHW in the UFC. There are many MWs who would make Wandy look small.

That said, I see a Silva win here. Jardine is not nearly as bad a matchup for Silva as Liddell is.

I’m a big fan of Jardine and hope he wins against Wandy. I’d also like to see Chuck win this one as well!

  9. Sam Cupitt on February 4th, 2008 9:32 am

Jardine will probably be bigger yeah BUT IT remains that Wanderlei will be able to get in close and muay thai his arse.

  10. William W. on February 4th, 2008 10:38 am

Wanderlei couldn’t get in close with Chuck. How in the world do you people expect him to do that with Jardine?

  11. Sam Cupitt on February 4th, 2008 11:02 am

Because Jardine and Liddell are completely different fighters.

  12. Rich on February 4th, 2008 11:12 am

i thought Wandy already made the move to MW.

  13. Mike on February 5th, 2008 3:46 pm

No, Wanderlei said he would not fight at Middleweight.

  14. Mike on February 5th, 2008 3:48 pm

If Jardine and Chuck win their fights in May/June, Chuck will most likely get the title shot first because he draws the most fans and ticket sales.

  15. Five Ounces of Pain | Keith Jardine thinks he’ll get the next title shot on February 7th, 2008 3:18 am

[...] he win his next fight (possibly against Wanderlei Silva), Keith Jardine feels a chance at the UFC light heavyweight championship could be coming his way. [...]

  16. phyteguru on February 14th, 2008 6:07 pm

im 89.24% sure that it’s gonna happen.

  17. Jewls on February 17th, 2008 8:14 am

chute boxe will be at the top in the ufc as they always been every where else.shogun or wandy will be champion before the end of the year.

  18. james on February 29th, 2008 4:07 pm

jardine got robbed he just beat chuck and chuck beat silva jardine should have a title shot the ufc keeps messing him around why should he fight someone chuck just beat when he just beat chuck? that does’t make sense

  19. vikingwarrior on March 26th, 2008 5:41 am

Jardine will have to come up with a successful game plan against Silva which will prove difficult, but he is a warrior and will figure it out. Silva is shrinking by the day and he has to contend with urine tests unlike his PRIDE days. Silva also doesn’t have the aggression that he had in PRIDE.
