HDNet announces deal to broadcast Strikeforce shows; Feb. 23 card in Tacoma to be televised
HDNet announced late Thursday that an agreement has been reached with San Jose-based MMA promotion Strikeforce to televise four events in 2008.
The first Strikeforce show to be televised on HDNet will be the promotion’s next show scheduled for February 23 in Tacoma, Washington at the Tacoma Dome.
The show is slated to be headlined by a super heavyweight encounter between Bob “The Beast” Sapp and Jan “The Giant” Nortje.
“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase our brand of mixed martial arts on HDNet,” Strikeforce president Scott Coker is quoted as saying in a press release issued by HDNet. “HDNet delivers television content to viewers in the highest quality format possible and Strikeforce has worked diligently to produce the finest, world-class fights for mixed martial arts fans. Together, the two entities will be able to deliver a superior product.”
Other bouts in addition to Sapp vs. Nortje include an MMA-rules bout between American kickboxing standouts Maurice Smith and Rick Roufus; a welterweight fight between Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Steve Berger; and Ryan Healy vs. Jorge Masvidal.

It is kinda funny, how EliteXC just went around buying smaller promotions and looks to be making squat while HDNet decides that they can just broadcast the dudes and score some easy bucks.
Guess it doesn’t hurt having your own channel.

Glad to see the freak show era is still alive and kicking. Sapp/Nortje and Smith/Roufus are both worthy of prime-time K-1 freak show. And I’ll enjoy every minute.

genius business move by cuban. let the small promotions come and go and run themselves, but be the medium by which they are all seen. then pick off their talent as you begin your own promotion. i would say tito and arlovski are legit HDNet possibilities, and i dont know who will land the couture/fedor fight when it happens, but i guarantee it will be seen on HDNet Fights. holla.
