Gary Goodridge: “Kimbo Slice is a 2008 version of Mr. T”

Gary Goodridge appeared on Fight Network Radio and had some unpleasant things to say about Kimbo Slice and also indicated that he would be more than willing to fight Kimbo:

“‘Kimbo Slice’ is a 2008 version of ‘Mr. T,’” Goodridge told Fight Network Radio. “Was ‘Mr. T’ tough back then? No. Could he beat anybody back then? No, but he had the words, he had the lyrics, and he had the gold.”

“Don’t come out telling people that you’re ‘Street Certified,’ that you can walk on the streets and punch out anybody, any man … you’re not afraid of nobody,” Goodridge said. “Man, I know people that will put him down and spank his ass.”

“I would fight ‘Kimbo’ for free,” he said. “Make the fight up, and I will fight him for free just to show people that I could kick his ass. He can’t beat nobody. He don’t want to fight any of this.”

For free? I don’t think you want to get your ass whipped for free, do you Gary? Maybe take the road that Tank Abbott did and command $1,000 more than Kimbo just so you can say you got paid more than he did.

Seems like everyone’s coming out of the woodworks now and saying they’ll fight Kimbo. Kimbo gets some publicity for the EliteXC show and then all of a sudden everyone and their mother is trying to get a piece of him. As for a fight with Gary Goodridge? I’ll take Kimbo via TKO, round one. All day baby, all day.

You notice that it is only the washed up fighters that want to fight him. They figure it is a way to get back into the spotlight and they know Kimbo won’t fight an established fighter. No fighter worth a crap will even waste their time right now with a fight against Kimbo. It makes no sense for them because Kimbo hasn’t established himself. He’s another Butterbean right now. Full of hype but hasn’t proven anything.

wow kimbo has fought twice and i’m already sick and tired of hearing about him.

the fact, that so many people, internet sites, fighters are talking about him
means that elite xc is acheiving their goals. people tend to forgot at the end of the day its about the “bottom line”, how much money do you bring in.

i won’t buy into the kimbo hype until he actually beats someone of note, until he shows us some takedown defense, some ground skill etc.
i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, i can see he’s putting in the “work” to becoming a more complete fighter.

but let’s face it…brock lesnar fought frank mir…kimbo fought tank
there’s a HUGE difference in talent right there

  • MMA SKOOL ™ says:

Gary Goodridge is only a few baby steps past Abbott as far as quality opponents for Kimbo goes.

Maybe Gary’s got more reach than Tank? But like Tank he throws wild looping haymaker punches and by the time he throws one or two of those, Kimbo’s already connected with multiple crisp straight punches to the middle of Gary’s face.

Go to Amazon and buy some of those cheap PRIDE FC box sets they sell if you want to see how tough Gary is. I’ll take Kimbo in that fight.

I’d rather see Kimbo go against someone with some takedown ability. But the brawls will keep the hype going, so I don’t expect him to fight a methodical opponent anytime soon.

Gary Goodridge is actually lightyears ahead of Tank Abbott, even at this point in his career.

Those of you who even put Gary and Tank in the same class are entirely ignorant.

Gary has held his own in K1 for years now. His gas is 100% better than Tank’s, his movement is better, his groundgame is better, and his power is at least equal (and better if you consider he can throw at least 100 times more punches than Abbott in a fight).

I’m not saying Gary would win. But he would do a hell of a lot better than Tank Abbott. He took everything Jan Nortje had to give on the feet in a recent MMA bout, and then beat him. Sapp couldnt take 30 seconds of Jan’s standup.

I think it’s funny everyone keeps talking about the skills Kimbo doesn’t have (takedown defense, ground skills)…but honestly…how do we know? No one seems to get past the one skill he does have…KO power. He may excellent ground skills…he seems to be training hard on all aspects of his game. I think one more fight against another “tomato can”…maybe one in better shape than Tank and with a wider arsenal would be good for him..then take the next step up in competition.

and quit doggin’ his ground game..
so far he’s 3-0 w/ 2 sub’s.. one being an actual legit sub..

i agree w/ ctownhood.. people say he’s got a puncher’s chance and no shot at a wrestler or sub’ist..

who the hell are they to say that?? they don’t know if he would have a shot or not..

Gary Goodridge saw the same thing we all saw in the newspaper and internet, that an “internet sensation” got paid $175,000 to beat up an 80 year old Tank abbott. Of course Gary is going to try to pick a verbal fight with him in hopes of sparking a rivalry. These guys know what they are doing at all times. Gary would never make that much money on his own or in K1. He needs to piggy back on someone like Kimbo, and I don’t blame him one bit. he has to make a living just like everyone else. And as far as the fight goes, I think right now, Gary might be too much for Kimbo. In 6 months, Kimbo might be far enough along to tear him apart. Kimbo is showing KO power, but we all know Gary has it too. Add in a crisper striking game and a decent ground game, and Kimbo loses. For now anyway.

  • Grape Knee High says:

I think Goodridge would take Kimbo with ease.

Gary has been staying active and his only loss since fighting Fedor has been to Heath Herring. And he was beating Herring like a red-headed stepchild up and down the ring until Herring got a lucky punch and a super-quick stoppage. Saying that Gary was dominating the Herring fight would be an understatement.

Put Kimbo in with anybody that knows Jiu-Jitsu and he will get beat in the first round. So what if Kimbo has KO power. This isn’t boxing. Mir proved that against Lesnar. I don’t see Kimbo fighting anybody with a ground game. Until he gets more practice with his ground game, we will continue to see the Kimbo Slice Circus Show in arenas where he will fight 80 year old fighters, maybe some handicaps, etc. It’s kind of like watching the old Toughman contests where a bunch of out-of-shape men with beer bellies stand toe-to-toe swinging at each other.

  • Mike Wolfe says:

I agree with Dan K. Since they’re both with Elite, that fight could happen. Ricco would be dangerous for Kimbo right now due to his experience and JJ skills. If he improves his conditioning, I’d have to give him the advantage against Kimbo.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • JacRabbit says:

Mike I agree with you that Ricco does have the advantage against Kimbo–but on paper….

Realistically, Kimbo is aggressive and explosive. If I had money on the fight I would put it on Kimbo with a 1st round TKO.

Lets just understand these facts folks… it will help you sleep better at night when you wonder why EliteXC pics Kimbos opponents so carefully

1.) The man knocks people out
2.) Kimbo IS under construction as an MMA fighter
3.) EliteXC is only 1 year old and doesn’t want to risk the marketability of their new money tree
4.) UFC has the flexibility to let Brock fight a former champ, then rebuild him as they see fit–all without putting themselves at large financial risks
5.) Brock was a NCAA champion! Stop placing him in the same category as Kimbo. He should be expected to compete at a much higher level and still do well

  • theickysticky says:

yes…..Ricco would be good for Kimbo. Only problem is Ricco has a glass chin. Add the fact Kimbo hits hard equals nite nite for Ricco. I think a tougher fight would be Mark Hunt because he has a chin of granite and will strike with his hands and feet.

So lets see it. I’m curious to see how many of them will just be speed bumps. Say what you will about Kimbo he doesn’t hold back, he is agressive. Unlike other fighters who seem happy to work for a decision win.

I don’t understand why alot of people hate the kimbo slices and the brock lesnars out there.

It seems like if you have a different profession before you come into mma all the fans hate you and think you cant submit or defend a takedown.

Kimbo has so far show up and fought like a good fighter.
Lesnar didn’t do to bad either he should of just backed up and let Mir stand instead of being in his open guard.

    hey, theickysticky…

out of 35 fights.. Ricco’s only been KO’d (TKO’d) twice..
    i wouldn’t say he’s got a glass chin..

plus.. he went the distance with Big Foot Silva.. who totally messed up Cabbage Correira.. who’s known for his chin.. those are some heavy hands..

    and JacRabbit,
eventually [although, he's already got, i believe, a guillotine victory over Roy Mercer] Kimbo will get a legit sub win.. and these people will have no other choice to root for him..

it just makes me mad how soo many people dis his ground game.. but NO ONE has seen it..

i suggest you KIMBO HATERS take a look at THIS:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UcmIQ4xLrY

apparently not a lot of people saw his fight with Ray Mercer..

he was kneeing in a muay thai clinch..
    throwing standing elbows..
    scored two takedowns..
    escaped a guillotine..
    and won by guillotine..

and i’m sure his ground game’s only gotten better since then.. i mean.. that was technically his first MMA fight..

i don’t see why that fight’s not on his record..
    anyone have answers??

QTF… the last 5 losses Goodridge has are to Herring, Fedor, Big Nog, Ricco (waaaaay back when Ricco way you know, good) and Yvel, IIRC. Besides Yvel, who can certainly bang, that’s pretty much a who’s who of MMA HWs.\

“out of 35 fights.. Ricco’s only been KO’d (TKO’d) twice..

Cheers to Samscaff and others for the Goodridge defence. Any man who’s been in with Fedor and lives to fight another day, never will fall into the category of “washed up”. Not to mention, like Tank, the man’s a pioneer. I’m talkin’ old school Vale Tudo. Kimbo’s got a little more of a punchers chance than the average person, but he’s got nothing Big Daddy hasn’t seen a thousand times. I can’t believe I’m evn talking about this, look at who the guy has fought in K1 and MMA.

This is a great site because most of the commentators here seem to be fairly analytical and intelligent, even though biased at times.

I see Kimbo as a natural fighter making the progression into MMA. He’s real and can fight. Only time will tell.

He needs to step it up a few notches, someone that will give him a good scrape and that guy needs to have more than just a punchers chance of winning. Maybe it’s Goodridge, maybe not, if Goodridge is to GOOD for Kimbo. Who should Kimbo fight next as a up n’ comer with only a few minutes of actual time in live MMA bouts??? Ken Shamrock?

    Any serious suggestions?

I’m not saying Goodridge vs Kimbo is a bad matchup. But Rodriguez would give Kimbo cred and a shot at a solid ground guy. At least give him a ground guy before giving him Goodridge, and the bomb war that it would be.

Maybe Kimbo is on his way to a legit career. If that’s what he wants, though, he should focus on fights against opponents in their prime. Goodridge may still have game, but he’d be perceived as another nostalgia/novelty match. Not what Kimbo needs right now.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Rich says:

    agreed w/ wolfe..

the people posting on this thread, right now, are giving Goodridge tremendous credit..

but if he fought Kimbo.. and Kimbo won.. there would be just as many people saying that Goodridge was a has-been.. and not a true test..

really.. i don’t see this ever ending..

i’m sure as soon as he beats a notable opponent.. someone will say he got lucky..

the kimbo haters will never stop… because.. no matter how good he is.. and may get.. they still won’t want him to succeed.. because of his past as a street fighter..

    idk.
it all sounds ridiculous to me..

the guy wanted to make the move to MMA.. and now he’s got 3 great wins [2 professionally] and is on a roll.. you might as well give him credit..

i know he just wanted to slug it out w/ Tank.. to prove something..

but what if, in his next fight, he does what he did to ray mercer.. and unleashes the elbows and knees and takedowns.. every one of those fields is soo much better now that he’s training w/ BAS..

    Hey Rich,

You are correct about Ricco. I guess whenever I think of Ricco I picture him getting KO’d by big Tim.

Either way, I think Kimbo would be favored in that fight and it would definitely be a step up but I think we can stop talking about it for a while because I don’t think Gary Shaw is going to put Kimbo in that position yet. Kimbo is his one of the top 3 draws for Gary and the last thing he is going to do is damage the goods.

And just for the record…I am a Kimbo fan and an EliteXC fan. I like what Elite is doing . You may not get the best known fighters around but every event I have watched has definitely been entertaining. Plus you get to watch the prelims for free on the net. Can’t beat that.

Kimbo is being brought along slow just like they would any good fighter. They are not going to just stick him in the ring with some one they know he is not ready for Bas and his other trainers are doing there job and slowly building Kimbo into a MMA fighter. Why does everyone have to have all the skill to be successful in this sport? No matter what anyone says, Kimbo is a big tough dude. You just can’t compete with natural toughness. I’m sure that a very seasoned BJJ vet could take him down and work a sub on him. But you are all missing one huge point. It’s gonna be hard to hurt Kimbo, and you have to get inside on him to take him down. Which means dodging one of those punches. I say he has just as much punch technique as any other MMA fighter. Plus he hits hard. Really hard. So I see a lot of people talking, but I bet u won’t see the same number willing to actually step in with him. It seems the MMA community doesn’t want these tainted outsiders like Lesnar or Kimbo coming in and mucking up their sport. At the end of the day, it’s two guys locked in a cage. Do they both have to be black belts?
