Those two douches are the most biased sports analysts out there. That talk about stuff they know nothing about. They should talk about things they’re familiar with, like bagel shops in new yoak.

Violent, compared to what? Why don’t these guys start by seeing what the mix is in Mixed Martial Arts. Start watching some grappling, try Youtube and watch some Dean Lister, Jacare, or Marcelo Garcia. Then check out some kickboxing, say some Andy Hug, Ernest Hoost, Masato. We know they’ve seen boxing so move on to some wrestling , uh, I can’t think of anybody, but my point is made. Then these guys can watch some guys that put all those elements together in a ring or a cage. THEN tell us it’s more violent or brutal, and that a boxer doesn’t punch you with the same intentions as a mixed martial artist. Jerks.

This segment is a prime example of the ignorance that (hopefully) this deal will quash. All they are talking about is how violent it is. It’s pretty obvious that neither of these guys have watced MMA. Anyone that has followed the sport for any length of time knows way better. CBS is the network that brought us Wide World of Sports, so it seems like a pretty obvious choice. They are embracing the sport just like they embraced boxing back in the day. The Marquez-Vasquez fight is on tomorrow night too. Did anyone see their other two fights. That shit was brutal Vazquez had blood pouring from both eyes, and Marquez could barely stand. People will get educated and begin to appreciate the sport a lot more. Have you noticed less booing when guys are on the ground? Or the applause when a takedown is reversed. That is due to the public becoming more educated about the sport. Now we just need to get everyone else to realize that this is the real deal, it’s not WWE, it’s not two guys beating the crap out of each other, it’ s a truly competitive sport that can fill the hole where boxing was.

The best point to take away from that is that the group of people they’re worried about seeing this stuff—-KIDS—-don’t even know what a network is. Most people have cable anyway, so kids can tune-in on anything they want anytime…….. These old announcers are acting like the old networks are the last sacred place. Nonsense.

And besides, BOXING IS MORE VIOLENT THAN MMA, imo. Listen to the guys who have been in MMA for years… They are coherent. Listen to a Boxer….. Can’t even talk. Chuck Liddell mumbles a little bit these days, but besides that and a lot of cauliflower ear and broken noses, I can’t think of one MMA fighter who is “punchy”. Boxers bash each others brains in for 12 rounds…… Gloves just allow them to keep going and going, but their brains are taking the full damage from the dull blows…… That’s more violent to me.

It’s funny how violence apparently has different level of acceptability. They show ads on network television for “Greatest Hockey Fights” DVDs, or have segments highlighting “Best NFL Hits” or even boxing KOs , but that is somehow different. Boxing may even be more brutal, because of the repeated blows fighters suffer over their career. Many MMA bouts end with a tapout or submission, with no long term damage being inflicted. Even the KOS in MMA are less brutal long-term, because it’s usually only 1 or 2 punches…whereas in boxing, they take many shots to the head before going down.

Violence???

I find it to be ironic that a couple of guys who enjoyed watching two men agree to puch each other in the face for a half an hour would find MMA violent. A healthy amount of MMA fights end with no substantial physical damage done to either party involved.
If Boxing is regarded as the sweet “science” Then perhaps they need to equate MMA as the Smart Science.

That’s not what is name is now. Anyway, “H. Rap” lived up to those words by shooing 2 black Atlanta police officers which resulted in the death of one of them in 2000.

Wilbon kept saying “violent” “violent” like the word qualifies as a helpful descriptor. In the context of sports, physical clashes are not considered violent because they are a) consentual and b) regulated by rules and refs and c) performed by trained atheletes.

Wilbon should extract the word “violent” from his rant and insert “tumultuous”. How silly would he look for not being able to handle the shocking developments of fierce competition.

Anyhow, I really just wanted to quote one of my favorite Black Panthers from way back. H. Rap Brown said, “Violence is as American as apple pie.”

That was surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be.

I echo the sentiment that I would rather see almost any other promotion other than EliteXC be the first on network TV. I really hope the rumors of CBS taking control of the network broadcasts are true.
