Report: Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen rematch postponed until June

A rematch between WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen that had originally been slated to take place on March 26 in Las Vegas has been postponed, according to a report on the Brazilian mixed martial arts website Tatame.

The Filho vs. Sonnen rematch is now slated to take place on a WEC show scheduled for June 1 in Sacramento, Calif.

The report indicates that the match was moved based on a request from Filho. While it’s hard to be completely certain of the reasons why Filho wanted the fight re-scheduled, it appears that symptoms of depression could be a reason.

If true that card has seriously been weakened without the second title fight. Still good just not going to be of the caliber of their previous showing on Versus.

I have know people who have struggled with depression, and if that is the case, I hope Paulo Filho gets his issues taken care of. Even though I am not a real big fan of his, I don’t want anything bad to come of this. MMA has to take a back seat until he is physically and mentally able to continue with his career.

I was wondering if the word “depression” had more to do with the translation than with the symptom. However, Filho has looked pretty listless in his last two fights. So, whatever you call it, it’s important that he’s acknowledging that he’s having problems getting motivated whether they’re clinical issues or not.

I would think that making a right-wing American scream bloody murder due to an armbar would be a great cure for the blues. But, I should probably leave politics out of this. I look forward to Filho getting back on the horse and earning his status as an elite MW fighter through impressive performance. He has the potential to be a really compelling champ.

I agree Jaydog. Watching the first Filho/Sonnen fight and hearing how Filho was supposed to be the best MW behind Anderson Silva, he did little to impress me. He looked like he was just going through the motions, and Sonnen was taking the fight to him. Filho was skilled enough to capitalize on Sonnen’s brief sloppiness to pull off an armbar…I will give him that much credit. If it is true that he has trouble cutting weight and he walks around at about 215-220 lbs., maybe he should move to LHW to keep from looking so out of it in his fights. I hope that this is the true reason for his lack of motivation and not being able to train instead of depression.

WEC offered Bryan “The Beast” Baker the fight with Sonnen at WEC 33 on thursday night. Originally booked against Nissen Osterneck (dropped out due to injury) then re-booked against Logan Clark, but has now been offered a shot at Sonnen. Bryans is expected to accept but no word if Sonnen intends to as of yet. If Baker knocks off Sonnen it will be a HUGE step in his young, yet impressive career.
