#18, boxing out did MMA in '07 by the TV numbers, which shows people love the sport, I agree with Rich S, you sound like a typical vegas fan, the drunk in the crowd laughing at the guy getting the shit kicked out of him.

moving on.

Jones-Silva would be cool to see, as a big fan of both MMA &boxing, and with 14 years boxing experience &a bunch of fights under my belt I think this fight would be great for both sports. Fight fans will tune in to see this from MMA &boxing, everyone will be curious to see if Silva can box well enough to get to Roy Jones, and to see if Roy Jones can handle a bigger, younger, strong man from MMA. I'd love to see it happen, I think mixed martial arts have come a long way, the fighters are getting better &better. As far as the boxing VS MMA debate, I say, the more the merrier! I'm not going to argue which is better, etc etc, it's been overdone. Both sports kick ass, &I have a lot of respect for them both &the warriors who participate in them.

Respectfully,
GB

I must admit that i go turned on when i heard about this. Im a huuuge fan of mr. Silva's work. Equally that of mr. Jones'. However, I personally think that mr. Silva would get beaten to a pulp inside the boxing ring under boxing rules as fast as mr. Jones jr. would get creamed inside the octagon with mma rules. These two disciplines are the exact opposite of each other. One cannot weigh which is better than the other simply because the two discipline requires extreme talent and toughness in every essence of the word to excel leave alone dominate like these two have in their respective eras. So lets leave this fairy tale as such. Just my two cents worth. =)

Why doesn't Silva take on a prime boxer with power in the boxing ring? Why does he challenge an old man in RJJ? I hate fighters who think they have proven themselves by beating Hall of Fame fighters who are way past their prime and whose skills have deteriorated drastically. Maybe Silva can call out Mike Tyson or George Foreman- Silva is a talented fighter but also is a piece of shit.

I love how people are talking about Roy Jones Jr needing to do an MMA match as a rematch.

RJJ isn't the one that called Silva out. Silva called him out. Quit crying already.

RJJ has a better chin, faster hands, better footwork, and better overall movement. Boxing is more about imposing your will on the other fighter, which is something that Silva can do when he has his BJJ, and Muay Thai at his disposal. Without it, He's walking into RJJ's backyard and asking to be kicked out of it against his will. Silva is an awesome fighter, but he is no world-class boxer in the same right that RJJ is.

As good as Silva is in the UFC ....getting in a Boxing ring with Roy would be the biggest mistake of his career.

His first venture into boxing ended in a 1 round Knockout loss.....against an unknown fighter.

Getting in with RJJ would be embarassing to him ...and to MMA.

Like I said before, where or when did Anderson say he could beat Roy? Who has stepped up to defend MMA after Mayweather's comments? All Anderson is trying to do is prove the technical abilities of the MMA community. For ANYONE to have the stones to say this is about money should get a job and stop pretending to be a TRUE fan.

It’s all about **context**. All sports/martial arts are designed to operate within a certain context and MMA is no exception to this rule. The rules and regulations of a particular sport define the context and identify the athletic skills and abilities necessary to succeed in that sport. While those skills and abilities may translate to and serve as a foundation for other sports they don’t guarantee success in other sports.

Kobe Bryant may be 6?6? with great leaping ability but that doesn’t mean he’d make a great wide receiver. Devon Hester may run a 4.35 in the 40 yd. dash but I don’t see him smoking Maurice Greene. Anderson Silva may be a great MMA fighter but I don’t see him outclassing any elite pro boxers. All are great athletes who excel at their respective sports and it should be left at that.

The problem is that there are athletes that, either ignorantly or arrogantly, assume that this doesn’t apply to them or their sport of choice. This is especially the case within the martial arts community and even more so with members of the MMA community and their fans. If you were to tell a decathlete with exceptional running ability that he couldn't compete with the likes of Maurice Greene or Asafa Powell, he would simply say "You're right. I'm not supposed to. My event isn't specialized and therefore neither is my training" and that would be the end of it.

Much of the debate regarding this issue could be resolved if members of the MMA community would simply come out articulately reply in the manner above. That doesn't excuse nor does it condone members of the boxing community making such observations and comments. However, if the sport of MMA is ever going to gain the legitimacy and respectability it seeks (along with the pay days that come with them) and do away with the expiration date many see it as having, members of its community are going to need to lose the testosterone filled, "we're the end all be all", bad boy image and start acting like professional athletes.
