Thiago Silva to face Antonio Mendes at UFC 84

Thiago Silva (12-0) is now set to face UFC newcomer, Antonio Mendes (14-2) at UFC 84 according to Sherdog.com.

Silva was originally meant to fight Rashad Evans at the May 24th card but when Mauricio Rua had to pull out of his scheduled fight with Chuck Liddell in June due to a knee injury, Evans stepped into his place.

The undefeated Brazilian, who last fought at UFC 78: Validation, in which he scored a first round TKO over Houston Alexander, will now take on a fellow Brazilian in the form of Antonio Mendes. Mendes went 9-0 in 2007 and fights out of Europe Top Team.

UFC 84 is headlined by a lightweight title clash between UFC lightweight champion, B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk. Intriguing light heavyweight matches between Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida as well as Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva will serve as co-main events.

Definitely very excited to see Silva fight again. Would have loved to see how he did against Rashad Evans but what can you do. Mendes seems to be a decent replacement since most of the top LHW are tied up right now with other fights. UFC 84 should be a sick card overall.

Also Thales Leites is set to fight Nathan Marquardt at UFC 85 according to a graciemag.com interview with him. Should be another solid fight on that slowly building card.

This will make the 3rd straight UFC event that I’ll buy, because of course I’m getting 83. Thiago is one of the more underrated fighters in the UFC, and I’m sure he’ll be in title contention very soon.

Mendes fought 9 times in one year??
    good lord.
might shape up to be a tougher opponent for Silva than most think..

all around good card. especially the main. rashad vs chuck is one of those fights to determine the next line of champs & contenders moving in. hughes to gsp, franklin to silva, chuck to rampage, sylvia to nogueira, penn back to 155.

no one knows for sure what can happen with chuck and rashad. if rashad can somehow take chuck down (who has the best takedown defense worldwide) who knows what can happen. chuck of course equals knockout. u can’t know 100% the outcome.

Thiago will become a bigger name. he just needs some time. the 205 pound class is stacked anyways.

also alexander getting caught by irvin was ridiculous and that might make houston seem like less of an opponent than we though he was.

Now that Chuck and Rashad are not fighting, it would be better to see Rashad and Thiago than newcomer Antonio Mendes and Thiago.
