Last month FiveOuncesOfPain.com sponsored its first mixed martial artist with LeVon Maynard in anticipation of his fight at Combat Sports Challenge 23 on February 23. Now we’re excited to announce that the site has decided to sponsor its first-ever competitive grappler.
FiveOuncesOfPain.com has reached an agreement to sponsor Lloyd Irvin jiu-jitsu black belt Jared Weiner in the 2008 Pan American Submission Grappling Championships scheduled for Carson, Calif. from March 28-30.
Weiner was the first-ever student of Irvin’s to ever be awarded a black belt and has been profiled for his accomplishments as a competitive grappler in various magazines and videos. He also operates his own school, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United, in Jenkintown, PA, where featherweight MMA prospect Wilson Reis also serves as an instructor. Sam Caplan’s wife and son are also students at the school.
Weiner is coming off a strong showing during the 2007 season having won first place in his weight class at both the 2007 Copa Atlantica BJJ Championships (black belt featherweight division) and the 2007 U.S. Grappling’s Mid-Atlantic Championships (black belt middleweight division).
As a part of the sponsorship agreement, Weiner will be wearing multiple 5 Oz. patches on his competition Gi as he competes in the Master’s Division. If you’re going to be at the tournament, feel free to introduce yourself to Jared and show your support of 5 Oz.
We’ll have an interview with Jared available on the site a later in the week so people can get to know him a little better and learn more about the world of competitive grappling.
