Pete Sell: Georges St. Pierre “is a mental midget”

April 4, 2008 by Adam Morgan

Pete Sell has some very interesting things to say in a new interview with Bryan Levick at FightTicker.com, including calling Georges St. Pierre a “mental midget.” Now if this isn’t the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t know what is:

Fight Ticker: What are your thoughts on GSP as a man and as a fighter?

Sell: GSP is an awesome athlete. He has all the tools to dominate but he is a mental midget — his mentality is very weak. He is a very nice guy and I have hung out with him, but I don’t like the way he flip-flopped after the first fight with Serra. GSP was cool right after the fight but about 5 weeks afterwards he started making excuses saying he didn’t train properly, then GSP retracted and said Serra was the better man that night, well what was it? I don’t like how his story changed. I believe that all the pressure is on GSP, especially considering he is fighting in front of his countrymen. Serra thrives on the pressure and likes the underdog role. Matt Serra is all heart and GSP is the type of guy that if they were in a bar GSP would back down from a fight while Serra is down for whatever.

So let me get this straight. GSP is the kind of guy who would back down from a fight in bar and Serra is the kind of guy who would throw down no matter what? And somehow GSP is the mental midget? I don’t get it. Anyways, Sell is an entertaining guy to listen to, so I recommend checking out the entire interview. It’s chock full of goodies.

yea, and Pete Sell must be a mental cyclops…and 1 minded individual.

he has no clue what he’s talking about. Sounds like Pete’s trying to get his name hyped up.

  2. Mike Wolfe on April 4th, 2008 3:58 pm

So basically Serra is the man and everybody who has fought him or might fight him is weak, backstabbing, etc. Drago can support his buddy Serra 100 per cent without disrespecting other fighters like that. Knucklehead.

  3. Tim R on April 4th, 2008 3:59 pm

Why is Pete Sell still relevent? 1-5 in the UFC. He should learn to shut his mouth.

  4. GoofyMonkey on April 4th, 2008 4:17 pm

Wow! Pete Sell insulting someone’s intelligence…

  5. NoRegrets on April 4th, 2008 4:34 pm

Id have to say Sell is outta his mind!GSP is an awsome fighter and as much as I always like to see the underdog win I just cant see Serra beating him.

  6. Alex Pelletier on April 4th, 2008 5:22 pm

He’s Serra’s coach, he’s only trying to put presure on GSP only 2 weeks before the fight. Man, if GSP is a mental midget, does that mean Sell is a mental smurf?

    GSP -> Greg Jackson
    Serra -> Pete Sell…? yeah…

  7. Jiu-Jitsu Guy on April 4th, 2008 5:47 pm

Better to be a mental midget instead of a zero, nobody like Sell. I don’t even care about Pete Sell.

Serra is a legit fighter, to say the least. So is GSP.

  8. joe on April 4th, 2008 5:59 pm

sorry guys but hes right ,the dude went to a shrink because he lost. i hear grade school stories from dudes who went to school with him about how serra loved fighting and never lost. and if you see now, besides the shonie fight he never got beat just decisioned. im telling you serra is gonna beat him again. purple belts at renzos tap out gsp what do you think serra is gonna do to him?

  9. AH on April 4th, 2008 6:42 pm

purple belts at Renzos arent getting punched/elbowed in the face by GSP when theyre rolling now are they?

  10. T. Giles on April 4th, 2008 6:58 pm

GSP might have some mental hurdles to overcome, its true. But as for being down for a bar fight, I’m quite sure that during his years he’s worked as a bouncer in Quebec clubs, so it would seem likely that he wouldn’t be the type to “back down” in that scenario. Just sayin… :)

Who the fuck is this Pete Sell?

  12. mo on April 4th, 2008 9:03 pm

is the #8 post Joe Scarola? yes Serra is possibly a little under-rated, but that doesn’t mean he is on par with GSP. I am just glad Pete Sell is weighing in on his opinion on mental health services and how people should face adversity.

  13. THORAZINE on April 4th, 2008 9:11 pm

    # 8 joe Says: “sorry guys but hes right, the dude went to a shrink because he lost”‘

Sorry Joe, even Mob boss Tony Soprano went to a psychiatrist. Some have visions of a GSP lying on a couch bewildered, unsure, dismantled, pouring his heart out. Get out of the stone age, fuck that macho crap. It’s a Sports Psychologist with more education and credentials and understanding of sports psychology than bonehead-zero Pete Sell could ever dream of, GSP went to a sports psychologist with an open mind and came out a better fighter because of it. GSP has physical and mental trainers, he is the new age athlete.

I was pretty much a fan of both GSP n’ Matt Serra’ but now I’m definitely rooting for GSP because I don’t want to hear that ‘mental weak’ BS about him again. Josh Koscheck tried to use that method and it got him an embarrassing pounding!

  14. Greg Urban on April 4th, 2008 9:35 pm

Serra is going to shock the world again and beat GSP. GSP will never be the same after this fight. He loses in front of all of those french Canadians and they will forgive him, but he will never forgive himself.

Good luck to them both, but at least Serra did not make excuses after the loss like GSP did. GSP is better than that and he knew he was wrong and tried to cover his asssss by saying he made a mistake, but you got beat down, your training had shit to do with it man.

  15. Nick on April 4th, 2008 10:24 pm

I CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE FUN OF GREG URBAN ON THE POST FIGHT REVIEW POST AFTER GSP BREAKS SERRA IN TWO!!

    haha, gtfo.

the whole thing with st. pierre’s mental state is so overblown and retarded it’s really past the point of being even worth talking about in my opinion. but of course the legions of master armchair tough guys who’ve never sparred let alone stepped into a cage can sit back and blah blah about it like it’s nothing.

as for sell…i think it’s pretty funny that he’s opening up his big mouth to blather on about something like this while pronouncing a move to a weight class that is so obviously not where he should naturally be. i guess the irony of sucking in your own weight class and having to move down because you can’t physically and MENTALLY do shit in your own weight class is completely lost on petey. i doubt he’ll make much of an impact at WW anyhow, which is kinda funny itself. the other thing that’s pretty funny about this is he’s talking shit about a guy who’s done more in this sport in the span of a couple of fights than sell has done in his entire career, let alone the fact pete will never ever be anywhere near the level st. pierre has elevated himself to. i like pete, but he should stick to his own business. he’d be much better suited to keeping to himself, being the jokey, dim new yorker that he is.

  17. Grape Knee High on April 4th, 2008 11:39 pm

That’s not really Pete Sell talking. It’s actually the two tumors protruding either side of enormous melon head that are making him say all these things.

  18. THORAZINE on April 5th, 2008 1:05 am

One good thing that came out of that interview was that they have no contact with Joey ‘The Puss’ Scarola.

  19. Brent on April 5th, 2008 3:38 am

apparently Drago is a huge dick…. but aside from this….

can someone please tell me why Serra is Top 5? just because he’s got the title now?… really?

so what if GSP didn’t have the belt and Serra beat him then…. does a lucky punch seriously garner someone T5 rights?

  20. Sergio G. Hernandez on April 5th, 2008 8:02 am

“so what if GSP didn’t have the belt and Serra beat him then…. does a lucky punch seriously garner someone T5 rights?”

    Eh… maybe. And that’s a HUGE maybe.

I mean, he did dominate the universally recognized no. 1 WW in the world. Now, I don’t agree that Serra should have EVER been ranked at #1; which up until after UFC 79, he was.

Aside from GSP, Serra has done nothing… absolutely nothing to garner even a top 10 ranking. What I’m wondering is this: will Serra will drop out of the top 10 if GSP completely handles him?

  21. mike wolfe on April 5th, 2008 10:01 am

As long as people are making predictions–Serra will dominate, etc.–I still believe that it’s an even money bet whether the fight happens due to Serra’s back.

  22. matt on April 5th, 2008 11:04 am

its funny because ive read interviews with serra where he clearly states taht “street fighting is not worth it, the loser goes to the hospital and the winner gets sued”. he was sued after beating some dudes ass in road rage fight

  23. revjames13 on April 5th, 2008 3:13 pm

I think Serra deserves his high ranking. While I don’t put him at #1 in the division, he’s definitely top 3 right now. Say what you will about lucky punches and a mentally unstable GSP, he destroyed the best fighter in the weight class when they last fought. Against another top 3 P4P (BJ Penn) he went the distance in a very close fight. Matt Hughes, on the other hand, has some devastating losses against the same two guys (though he does have a W against each as well). And Hughes is still top 5. Against Karo, Serra almost KO’d him, but couldn’t finish, so that fight was very close. No one has made Serra look bad in recent memory. He has world class BJJ and has become a very good striker. No one in the division would be able to steamroll through him, he is a serious challenge to anyone at WW. I think he could beat Fitch and Kos, though those fights would be real close. Serra is very tough mentally and super seasoned at this stage in his career. If it weren’t for his recent injury I would say he had a real shot at shocking GSP a second time. As it stands though, I just can’t see GSP losing. I think he’s going to set a pace that Serra can’t hang with. But it should be a hell of a fight and I think Serra, even in losing, will prove he deserves his place near the top of the divison.

  24. Warrior Poet NY on April 5th, 2008 10:16 pm

Does anyone know what GSP has been referring to specifically in the clip they keep showing on the previews when he says about Matt Serra “He crossed the line”…

I guess getting KTFO is crossing a line. But if anyone know if Serra said something specific i’d like to know.

  25. revjames13 on April 6th, 2008 12:40 am

He referred to GSP as “Frenchy” while suggesting it was less than honorable that Mr. St. Pierre heaped on the excuses in the month following the loss. His disparaging remarks were delivered in the inimitable Serra gumbadi style. It has apparently ruffled GSP’s feathers. We’ll see how much bite has has in him when they meet again.

  26. Alex Pelletier on April 6th, 2008 12:40 am

GSP looks impressive physically and mentally in this video, training at Jackson’s camp for his match against Serra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6khH9kRSH8

  27. Jay K. on April 7th, 2008 12:49 pm

Sell has about as much intelligence as GSP has the ability to talk smack.

    WAR WITH HIS FIST!!

  28. revjames13 on April 11th, 2008 1:51 am

Just an idea here. If Serra wins, it would set up a Serra BJ Penn superfight. Battle of the best jits guys with good fists. That fight could be a classic…

  29. Mr Surbade on April 13th, 2008 1:38 am

    Yeah ! Let’s get it on !

  30. SERRAGOTLUCKYSWINGINGFORTHEFENCES on April 16th, 2008 5:53 pm

#8 Joe did you really make a reference to someone knowing Serra in elementary school and thats how you know he is tough? Joe you are almost as intelligent as Pete Sell. Lol I honestly didnt even know someone could have the audacity to say GSP is weak in anything, i dont know if you have eyes but did you watch the matt hughes fight? Also i am pretty sure GSP is mentally strong enough not to get knocked out with like 5 seconds in a fight by A SPINNING BACK FIST? Joe you, Pete Sell, Gary Shaw and Sean Sherk should start your own blog where only retards can give their opinion.
