Behold…The YAMMA Pit!
Posted by Adam MorganHere’s a quick video which reveals the “new” fighting surface that they intend to use at this Friday’s YAMMA Pit Fighting event in Atlantic City, New Jersey. To me it looks like Chuck Norris’ WCL surface with a cage around it, but what do I know? I’ll be interested to see how it works in MMA and how it plays out at Friday’s event, but I don’t think it’s “revolutionary” enough for YAMMA Pit Fighting to ride on.
And is it just me or does Bob Meyrowitz sound like the anti-promoter? The guy sounds like I should be listening to him lecture a college classroom about the Civil War or something, not a fight promoter. Thanks to MMA Mania for digging up the vid.

That cage surface is actually a good idea in my opinion.
I’m trying to think if there is any reason at all to order the PPV? I’m interested because it is MMA, but wow - is that a reason to shell out 40 (?) bucks to see Butterbean try to eat Pat Smith?
Like Jordan Breen said today wait until somebody does a Tim Boetsch-David Heath throw at the top of the YAMMA pit and watch the guy roll down.
Better not be any floor seats at the arena, because they won’t see shit grappling wise.
Probably just stick the commuters from EliteXC: Street Certified in the floor seats.
Great idea if it works.
No more pushing against the cage and using it to win because its the only way you can.
All those wrestlers, and they know who they are, will have to fight instead of avoiding it by using the cage to stop their opponent from attacking them.
.. this will be very be interesting to watch, they might be onto something here.
Wonder how the uphill bump will affect the groundgame near it.
Can’t wait to see fighters break their ankles and drop out of the tourny on the new fighting surface.
good to see they’re keeping up their amateur porn level production values.
this seems more like a roller derby track than fighting surface, but i see why they’re doing it. however, i dont think i have any interest in paying to see it. maybe if there were some younger fighters participating. seeing these old guys trudge around a cage past their prime just bums me out.
won’t even look for it on youtube
Seems to be merit to the concept of an elevated perimeter to try to eliminate the advantage of a stronger fighter pushing you against the fence and tryning to hump his way to a victory. I’ll look up the event on youtube to see how it played out.
that IS the wcl fighting surface + cage.
“lecturing a college classroom”? Who gives a flying f*ck what he sounds like?
He sounded EXACTLY the same twelve years ago when being interviewed about a little company he was starting up called “UFC”!
The amount of whining devoted to yamma sounded weak is incredibly frivolous to me. Also destructive. It’s another start-up company, GREAT. The more the better.
An eight-man tournament nonetheless!
But I guess all this flies directly over the head of someone who just got into the sport five years ago, like Adam Morgan.
Typical newb response.
The “pit” definitely interests me. Unfortunately, beyond Ricco, the fighters don’t.
I like the fact that someone is trying new concepts and working to improve mma, whether it does or not, at leat they are trying.
If this was 19.99, i would order it out of curiosity, but 34.99 or whatever is just to much for this level of competition, imo.
I hope it does succeed and they can continue and maybe get a higher level of fighter overall.
I also like the concept of a legends/masters fight. While these guys may not be what they once were, it is good for them to get work and it lets newer fans have an idea of where today’s mma came from.
Wow slow down Drizzle, Bob Meyrowitz was on Fight Network Radio yesterday and wouldn’t even talk to Mauro Ranallo about the surface.
Then comes this video explaining the whole thing.
Bob Meyrowitz also said there has been no serious injuries in a MMA event.
Mauro Ranallo informed him that Sam Vasquez died after fighting, Bob had no idea.
Then Bob claimed only 1 time in MMA history has a fight ever been stopped due to a elbow strike on the ground.
I am guessing Bob Meyrowitz doesn’t watch much MMA cause lots of fights have been stopped because of elbows on the ground.
Bob Meyrowitz needs to catch up on whats happening in MMA he sounds like a total Newbie.
Perhaps you remember the way people felt about Gary Shaw… the ex-boxing promoter everyone thought would be a fly-by-night failure at best; a disastrous black stain on the sport at worst.
Maybe Meyrowitz shouldn’t be on the microphone. But to me, in the long run, it’s a non-issue. Worse still it’s practically red herring to even mention the guy. What should we really be concerned with here?
The fact that VIRTUALLY EVERYONE with a keyboard is dissing this yamma thing.
For example, in this very article:
*Here’s a quick video which reveals the “new” fighting surface that they intend to use at this Friday’s YAMMA Pit Fighting event in Atlantic City*
The word “New” he puts quotation marks around. Why, is the fighting surface NOT new? It IS NEW.
Then why quote it like he’s lying or even bluffing?? because he is already trying to discredit yamma. Why? What has yamma done to deserve such negative press?
the question:
What has yamma done to deserve such negative press?
I think this has been promoted as best as it could be.
Although the idea of getting in old “over the hill fighters” sounds stupid at first, for a new promotion with a limited budget it will create a lot more hype than if it was a couple of “no-names” fighting.
As for all the negative press…I guess there is always going to be doubters when it comes to something different. The boxing crowd was a little bit like that when MMA first kicked off if you can remember.
