Report: Frank Mir, Minotauro Nogueira tapped as TUF 8 coaches

Cage Potato is reporting that Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira have been selected as the coaches for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter reality television show:

An unofficial source tells Cage Potato that the coaches have been signed for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, and they are none other than UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former champ Frank Mir.

This would indicate that Mir will get the next title shot against Nogueira and the two will likely face off in a pay per view extravaganza at the end of the season. Coming off of a season with personable guys like Forrest and Rampage, Nogueira and Mir may be a change for the worst. The UFC seems infatuated with making the coaches for TUF fight one another for a title at the end of the season but I don’t think Mir and Nogueira will be able to carry a season of TUF like Forrest and Rampage, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture, etc.

Most of the fanbase only knows Frank Mir because he beat Brock Lesnar and most of them have no clue about Nogueira’s past history and likely have only seen him fight because they bought the UFC 81 pay per view that Lesnar vs. Mir was a part of. Putting these two as the coaches of the next season could prove to be costly as far as ratings go.

Didn’t the UFC already confirm Frank Mir vs. Justin McCully for UFC 86? Are they just completely overlooking McCully, because that’s pretty damn disrespectful.

This is a good fight, but perhaps questionable coaches unless Nog turns out to be unusually personable, which he might be, you never know. On the surface he doesn’t scream Mr. Personality but he might be interesting as a coach, purely from a technical standpoint, since he actually is a coach. Mir on the other hand might be able to bring some personality. He’s the comeback kid, he’s had a crack at announcing back in the day, he can ride in on his motorcycle, pretend to crash it, and then get up laughing, punking Noguiera. Flava Flave can be one of his cornermen.

I seriously question this. What makes sense is they’d put off a HW title fight for a year due to lack of contenders. What doesn’t make sense is everything else.

  • Sam Cupitt says:

I gotta agree with Huckaby. The UFC wouldn’t book a fight between Mir and McCully if they were thinking about using Mir as a coach on the Ultimate fighter. I seriously doubt they’d blindly assume Mir would beat McCully and just film the show with that intention in mind.

They have definitley got to stop using title challengers and start putting in grudge matches again.

I bet you that the UFC is furious that Karo just lost. If (when) GSP gets the belt back this weekend, I’m sure they were setting up GSP/Karo as coaches.

If Sherk beats BJ they might do Sherk/Huerta also. I’m not buying this, especially since the Mir fight coming up.

We know, we are just stating why we think this rumor may not be true. Wasn’t there also a rumor floating around that GSP and Fitch were going to be coaches?

How about four coaches so they can hold up both welterweight and heavyweight!

    Crap.

Why is TUF the UFCs only way to build stars? This means we have another two guys off the bench for ages. What about Werdum’s shot, what about Vera’s? You telling me Mir could get past either of these guys and is above Herring, Gonzaga and Kongo? Give me a break.

Come on UFC, just get a TV deal and maybe we can see the back of TUF forever. I’m fed up of seeing top names sit out for ages. Come on, Pride made superstars out of its’ fighters, and they didn’t need a TUF program to do it. Market them properly, put on a show for once and put them before Dana and the brand, then maybe you won’t have to rely on TUF for your fanbase.

Thats pretty narrow thinking if you believe that is the only way they build stars.

Rampage and Forrest are way bigger names to TUF fans and definely have big personalities. Nog is awesome too though. HE may not be all goofy like forrest but he is a very softspoken likeable and modest guy. This season should have been HW’s though too. I think the ufc needs to freeze up the HW division more than any other. Maybe by the time TUF 8 ends the division will be somewhat recovered and Nog and Mir have bigger fanbases like they deserve(especially nog)

eh I don’t think it’s a bad idea to be honest. It’s like watching The Real World…you don’t know who the cast members are until you watch the show.

Same thing goes here with TUF you might not know all the fighters and coaches until the 5 episode. It will be good ratings if you ask me.

all i know is the heavyweights need a tuf season. there hasn’t been heavies on tuf since season 2. and the ufc heavies I think would be in a much better state if it wasnt for the loss of randy and tim & gro cop. as well as the mixed performance from kongo, herring, gonzago, and werudm.

8th season i believe is with heavyweights as well as lightweights but im not sure. randy vs big nog would be a better idea if randy wasn’t gone. but there’s no real better combinations at this point in time for coaches who else is there??

I totally disagree with just about everyone on this thread including Adam.

I think Mir is a fantastic choice. Whether you like him in the ring or not all you have to do is watch one WEC broadcast and it will become very clear to why he was chosen . He is bright , articulate , and very very well versed in BJJ. I think he could turn out to be the best coach TUF has had .

On to Big Nog. What better way to introduce the champ to the casual fan than to plaster his face on spike for 2 months straight. In regards to the ratings I see no relation that ties the coach’s to ratings ? If you go back and track the ratings from the past few seasons they have been pretty much level for some time now.

The only thing that is perplexing is that Mir is signed to fight McCully? While I don’t see McCully beating Mir it is a bit disrespectful to him as a fighter.

I’d say that Mir and Nog are as well known as Couture and Liddell were in the first season. Since then the UFC has taken off. Who’s to say that with the same exposure, Nog and Mir can’t become bigger stars thn they already are. I think it’s a business plan with some foresight, and some risk.

Assuming that Mir and Nog are the coaches, it could work. Mir is articulate enough. He does a good job on WEC, imo. They don’t have some huge legacy to deal with. Neither Rampage nor Forrest are polished public speakers, for pity’s sake. Even if Nog is quiet, you can do a lot with editing and show lots of footage of him rolling with the contenders.

Jason/Evan… Mir is extremely intelligent and does a very good job on the WEC broadcast . He is by far the best host next to Rogan. Oh Yeah If you watched the last few WEC shows you would know where I was coming from.

This to me falls into a “no Brainer” for the UFC . They need a heavyweight TUF. There are very few if any who would qualify for this. There really are no others out side of AA.
Herring ? please he lost three times to Nog how the hell are you going to market that fight ? Vera ? dude lost to captain snore and has been out of the publics eye for what 2 years now ….he’s not ready! Kongo .. might as well go and get Cro-Choke ! Gonzaga ..lost 2 in a row and cant speak any English, Werdum Lost to AA in his last televised fight no way thats happening .

People should put themselves in the UFC’s place and it would become very clear what needs to be done .

It will be boring to watch week after week, it will retard the heavywiehgt division even more, and in the end showcase a fight that not many can say they are “extremely” excited to see.
Rather see Herring and Lesnar coach.
And get on with a Werdum and Vera get shots at the belt.

DANA stop tying up the belts with this crap.
We could have seen both Fitch and Alves fight for the belt by now in the 170’s.

johhny speaking of andrei arlovski why doesent he get a title shot and st. pierre fitch do tuf. hes won i think 3 fights since silvia. and mir has been fighting well but needs a couple more quality wins before he gets a title shot. werdum, gonzaga, and vera have all lost 1nce in there last 2 fights their not even close. and kongo lost to herring so he lost it.so mir or arlovski.
