Report: Liddell injured; UFC 85 main event cancelled

April 21, 2008 by Sam Caplan

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has been taken off of the card for UFC 85 scheduled to take place in London on June 7, MMARated.com is reporting.

The UFC has yet to issue an official statement.

Liddell had been scheduled to fight Rashad Evans. Evans is also expected to be removed from the card with the bout against Liddell likely to be re-scheduled for later in the summer.

Liddell had originally been scheduled to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on the card, but Evans was tapped as a replacement after Rua was forced to bow out after aggravating a knee injury.

There is no word if a replacement main event will be added to the UFC 85 lineup. A heavyweight title eliminator between Brandon Vera and Fabricio Werdum is currently the highest profile match that’s still scheduled.

According to the Wrestling Observer, the event, scheduled for the O2 Arena, has sold over 10,000 tickets, making it very unlikely that the event will be re-scheduled entirely.

It will be interesting to see if the show remains scheduled for pay-per-view, as drawing a strong buyrate could be difficult without a legitimate main event. UFC 85 will also be taking place just two weeks after UFC 84, which already an obstacle in regards to drawing a strong buyrate.

I’m pretty sure this show has been scheduled to air on Spike for a while now. Evans mentioned this on his website last month.

  4. matt on April 21st, 2008 3:59 pm

this is a pretty big blow for a show. if there was more time, they should move wand/jardine to the card.

  5. JJ on April 21st, 2008 3:59 pm

Now what exactly are they going to do with the card?

  6. Mike Wolfe on April 21st, 2008 4:06 pm

Any rumors about the nature of the injury?

that sucks, first Shogun v Liddell cancelled which would have been huge, then to see Evans get his loss at the hands of Liddell not going to happen either, i do wonder what happened to Chuck, they should have Hamill v Bisbing 2 (yes i know that Bisbing just fought two days ago @ 185 but, if he could go back to 205 to loose again in England that would be great, o ya he “won” that fight), this card has gone downhill since Shogun got injured, now all we can hope for is is perhaps Shogun v Liddell sometime in Sept, then the winner challenge Rampage or Forrestt for the title in Dec…. i know what about Lyoto, have him fight Jardine in september hell why not, my two cents, cheers…….

  9. Dan on April 21st, 2008 4:40 pm

Maybe they’ll put in Hamill against Evans? Then all they need is a Main Card Lol

  10. Zack on April 21st, 2008 4:48 pm

Go back and watch the Serra/GSP pay-per-view - I noticed that in previewing the London show they had removed Chuck and Rashad, but at the time I thought it was a typo. I guess I should have had my tinfoil hat on tighter.

am i the only one hoping they put thiago silva and rashad evens back together? i would be stocked for that everyone loves when undefeated fighters fight each other. or you could move the sokoudju(get an easier name)/nakamura to this card, it as the international feel the ufc loves to put on in england. just thoughts? and ya i know this doesnt replace liddel but have u seen the undercar? what fight do YOU move up? i know poor ideas but ideas none the less

  12. FANOFALL on April 21st, 2008 5:10 pm

they cant add a main event this close to the fight, who would they get, and then whoever loses the fight would have the typical excuse that they werent ready, leave the card as is and put it on spike for free, maybe add a lw contender spot, lw’s are always in shape and ready to throw down, just my opinion

  13. woooburn on April 21st, 2008 5:45 pm

this blows. i wonder if they could get silva/okami together in time?

too bad about crocop’s exile. would have been a good draw for a uk show.

  14. j mac on April 21st, 2008 6:02 pm

i agree with woodburn all they have to do is move it further in the month

  15. JTM on April 21st, 2008 6:41 pm

While I’m disappointed Chuck won’t be there, I’ve been to 3 of the last 4 UK UFC events and I’d say we’d prefer any game fighter, big name or not, who wants to come over and just *bring* it. Some of the best fights I’ve seen were on the undercard from guys who had nothing to lose, who *needed* the win. After watching UFC 83, I’m sure the fans in Montreal would want to swap the pathetic televised display by Starnes against Quarry for Goulet’s undercard knockout any day. You give me another fight of the calibre of the Paul Kelly / Paul Taylor scrap like we had in Newcastle for UFC 82, in the O2 in June on the PPV, and I might consider going.

  16. jj on April 21st, 2008 6:59 pm

I heard he pulled a had a bad hamstring pull………

  17. the one on April 21st, 2008 7:40 pm

good thing coz evans don’t deserve chuck!!!!!!
maybe they can replace it like nog vs cain because ufc has no more heavyweight best!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. AntonK on April 21st, 2008 7:59 pm

Rashad v Thiago Silva. Make it happen.

    WOW!
correct me if i’m wrong.. but isn’t this the first time Chuck’s ever had to pull out of a fight in the UFC??
    i NEVER saw that coming..
well, glad to hear that they’ll probably be pulling Rashad too.. because i’ll be damned if i’m going to see him in a main event [with someone other than chuck] on a card that holds vera/werdum, davis/swick, etc..

the card already took a major blow in losing Shogun.. but.. losing chuck?? that’s horrible.. they’ll probably find a way to slip Bisping into the main event seeing as how it’s going to be in london.. and Bisping didn’t even get touched this weekend.. soo.. we know he has enough time..

    #14,
    Nog/Cain???
    wow.
    slow down buddy.
    Cain just got here.
I know he shows A LOT of promise.. but.. that would be absurd..
and i’m pretty sure Nog’s set to coach Season 8 of TUF.. sooo.. no fights for him soon..

  23. Jeremy on April 21st, 2008 8:53 pm

I am wondering if they might put Bisping on this card now that Liddell is out. He said in a post fight interview he might be fighting again rather quickly and this card is in England. Main event of Bisping-Franklin might be interesting.

  24. Zack on April 21st, 2008 9:12 pm

Bisping vs Leben would be more likely

  25. casper the unfriendly ghost on April 21st, 2008 9:15 pm

just throw anderson silva another victim…or bring someone up from wec like brian stann

  26. Kogepan on April 21st, 2008 9:18 pm

They should just cancel the card. Terrible scheduling by silva, they should have spread out more of the fights from 84 to 83 and 85.

Now they are producing 2 really crappy cards and one pretty good card.

Wish Pride was still around and you would see champions fight every couple of months instead of an average of 1.5 times a year. UFC scheduling is a joke.

  27. Sam Cupitt on April 21st, 2008 9:23 pm

That’s a fairly good idea their Zack. Leben wanted Bisping and I think Bisping could be up for it as well. Don’t think its PPV quality by and stretch but if its free on Spike… let the good times roll eh?

  28. Zack on April 21st, 2008 9:48 pm

They both have TUF popularity, so they might be able to pull it off on Spike. In my opinion it might be a bit of a risk in how the UFC is building Bisping as a MW contender, because Leben is no joke.

  29. Rich S. on April 21st, 2008 9:51 pm

i wouldn’t mind seeing Bisping/Leben.. for free.. it would just be a crappy MAIN EVENT.. as i mentioned earlier.. how weird would it be to go from swick/davis to vera/werdum then to Bisping/Leben??

    idk..

i’m sure it will be bisping.. i just can’t quite figure out the opponent..

i think Bisping/Leben would result in a UD for Bisping..
Bisping has a great attack.. with a good mix punches kicks and knees.. and although Leben looked very technical in his bout with Terry Martin.. it looked like he reverted back to his sloppy ways in the Sakara fight [sloppy as they may be... they work]
they obviously both have great chins.. Lebens head is just like.. a BIG rock.. and in 16 fights.. Bisping’s never been KO’d.. it would come down to Leben swinging for the fences [and eventually gassing] and Bisping countering every attack.. or.. Bisping could take it to the ground.. Then again, we could see a 5 sec. KO.. nothing’s for sure these days..

  30. Zack on April 21st, 2008 9:52 pm

I just saw they are rumoring James Irvin/Evans as a replacement bout…huh…sorry, that doesn’t work for me…at all.

  31. JBulgin on April 21st, 2008 9:56 pm

this is bullshit… liddel aint injured his team came out and said chuck doesnt really wanna travel a couple of months ago…. lesnar pulls out because theres no money over here, then rua gets injured now liddell “injured” guess chucks wants to stay in his comfort zone and fight in las vegas… FUCK CHUCK!!!!! who he gonna get thiago silver vs mendes?? dana white based this event on liddell, werdum vs vera is a poor fight anyway, swick vs “the irish hand grenade” (yeh ok then) if my best mate was not in to ufc as much as he is i would get my money back!! this is bullshit dana white better do something special to be getting me back intereseted in this event i spent around £250 on this event and it better be worth it! FUCK CHUCK u aint injured your a dickhead who probably wanted more money and dana if you dont put a decent main event you will lose alot of fans over here because i feel cheated!!!!

  33. Ridman on April 21st, 2008 10:24 pm

I did know Vera and Werdum were fighting for the heavyweight title……….I think there is a little miss print there.

  34. xx2000xx on April 21st, 2008 10:42 pm

So with 10k sold, they won’t cancel the event. The card as follows:

    -Fabricio Werdum vs. Brandon Vera
    -Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites
    -Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick
    -Martin Kampmann vs. Jorge Rivera

    Preliminary Bouts:
    -Ryo Chonan vs. Roan Carneiro
    -Thiago Tavares vs. Matt Wiman
-Luis Arthur Cane vs. Jason Lambert
    -Jess Liaudin vs. Paul Taylor
    -Neil Wain vs. Antoni Hardonk

I bet they wish they still had cro-cop on their roster as he’d fit in nicely.

My guess is they’ll put it on Spike, but wow, Werdum and Marquart as co-main events could = disaster. They are calling Florian & Huerta right now as we speak, as that could be billed as a #1 contender for the shot at the belt and fill in as the main event.

  35. Zack on April 21st, 2008 10:46 pm

    Quote from Dana at ufc.com:

“We’re adding fights to the card and rearranging it so the UK fans won’t have to worry, we’ll still be bringing an amazing card to London
and the O2 Arena. The UFC® always delivers.”

    Cross your fingers.

something tells me.. we’ll know by tomorrow.. what’s gonna happen.. and it’ll be CRAZY..

“We’re adding fights to the card and rearranging it so the UK fans won’t have to worry, we’ll still be bringing an amazing card to London and the O2 Arena. The UFC® always delivers.”

that’s his job to say these things, like hyping up Evans vs Bisping as a “main” event

  38. slimm on April 21st, 2008 11:53 pm

his leg looks NASTY from that pic @ ufc.com, Florian v Huerta gets my vote for main or co~main event
and hopefully Shogun v Liddell once they both get rehab’d somewhere around september, that would b best just chalk the Evans v Liddell fight to be a wash it really wasnt a great idea in the first place….
add Bisbing v Leben and Florian v Huerta

then put the winners of Lyoto v Tito , Wanderlei v Jardine against each other on the same card as Shogun v Liddell in sep that would be great in my humble opinion (ok well if Tito wins fuck it, put Evans v Jardine/Wanderlei, o but what if Wanderlei wins but moves down to MW, soo it would be training partners against each other, this is sooooo confusing), make Shogun v Liddell happen now, bottom line please…… cheers
