5 Oz. of Pain on CBS Sports: Q&A with NFL player turned fighter Marcus Jones

May 2, 2008 by Sam Caplan

five.jpgIn my latest column for CBSSports.com, I had the opportunity to interview one of the top heavyweight prospects in MMA, Marcus Jones.

If the name is familiar to you it’s because Jones was a former first round pick in the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a six-year career in the NFL, Jones decided to call it quits and eventually found his way into competitive mixed martial arts.

During the interview, Jones answered questions about how he feels about other NFL players in MMA i such as Johnnie Morton; his status as a member of Rob Kahn’s Gracie Tampa school; whether major promotions are trying to sign him; the differences between fighters and football players; and much more.

Sam you’ve done it again. Great interview with the former football player.

Only thing I didn’t agree with in the interview was how Marcus was all for the idea of iron ring.

To me Iron Ring is just stand up boxing with MMA gloves on. That’s how they are trying to make it. I think they should have just made it a boxing show to be honest. Kinda like the contender.

    A good, interesting enough interview.

But do you really think poker is a sport? That is what sticks with me from that feature.

He had some interesting insights about pro football vs. mma, including athlete attitudes and injuries. Don’t know where his fighting career goes, and I’m still a little skeptical about atheletes who turn to mma as a fallback after their careers in other sports fall through, but he’s a thoughtful guy.

    Nice interview.

But poker?? Yeah, those are some world class athletes there. Remember a couple of years ago when they wanted poker in the olympics? I wonder how many of them could pass the olympic drug testing? Seems like every time I watch a poker tourney, they are talking about how many times player X has been in rehab.
