JZ Calvancante could miss rest of ’08

Making an appearance on the Savage Dog Radio Show at Sherdog today, JZ Calvancante claimed that during a knee scope he was diagnosed with a torn ACL and will have corrective surgery on it next week. The injury will require up to four months of rehab and will keep JZ out of the ring until the end of the year at the earliest and possibly into early 2009.

JZ was ranked nearly across the board as the #1 lightweight in the world prior to a loss to Shinya Aoki at DREAM.2 at the end of April. Though JZ landed some strong punches, Aoki controlled the action and pace of the fight and took home a unanimous decision.

Its a shame because he Huerta and BJ are my three fav LWs and i enjoy all of their fights. I was going to say how can Aoki control the pace of the fight by pulling gaurd all the time but you’re right, he did, and he did it well. He was like an octopus everytime JZ got close Aoki would wrap him up and stick to him like glue. It must have been extremely frustrating, I felt claustrophobic just watching it.

I am a very big fan of the rubber guard. It’s extremely effective and I’m surprised only a few people use it. Day had his dirty dirty way with Belcher while utilising it.
