Derek B(#43) the problem is that people who fight at heavyweight aren't natural HWs, so they go on the show, and then drop down to LHW. Case in point, Keith Jardine is huge for LHW, but would be undersized at HW, so he dropped down. Rashad was way too small for HW so he too dropped down.

What the UFC needs to do is start getting Carwin, Velasquez, and Lesnar in the mix. Each should be fighting 3 times a year until they are legit contenders.

Kongo, Gonzaga, Werdum, Vera, Mir, and Herring are all vying for the top spot. If I was Joe Silva, I'd set it up like this.

Mir/Nog for Title (happening)
Werdum/Vera #1 contender
Gonzaga/Kongo
Herring/Sanchez (give herring a win or give Sanchez a legit win, he'd be riding a 3 fight win streak over 2 quality opponents and would have some steam, his only loss being to cro-cop)
Coleman/Lesnar
Velasquez/Hardonk

UFC needs to build up their heavy weight division. What a better way then to do a TUF based on heavyweights.

I personally tend to agree with Matt (#40) on this issue. Everyone is saying the Heavyweight Division is dying and needs a shot in the arm. It's true, it does. They've lost Randy and Sylvia and might be losing Arlovski. But the problem in my opinion isn't a lack of talent. There is a lack of depth, but I think the top tier of the heavyweight division is pretty stacked. Big Nog is one of the most underrated fighters in the world. Frank Mir is a world class submission specialist and has a pretty impressive past that everyone seems to have forgotten about. Vera, Werdum, Kongo, Herring, Gonzaga and Lesnar are all quality contenders.

Having the title on hold sucks, but this might be the shot in the arm the heavyweight division needs. Make people give a damn about Nog/Mir because it could be an awesome fight and if people are actually watching these two heavyweight go at it, it could make people care about the title.

I just want to clarify my comment #13. I'm not saying that I am dissing the UFC, but having to wait a year in between title fights is a bit ridiculous. Plus the heavyweight division needs CPR, but I don't think that having another season of TUF heavyweights is the answer.... the winner of the last HW season is now a LHW and the runner up is a nomad! And for the record I never said I wasn't going to be a UFC fan anymore!!!

I think this is a great idea. The UFC heavyweight division is on life support. Werdum/Vera is for #1 contender. I think that Gonzaga/Herring is next for both of them. The winner of Herring/Gonzaga will face the loser of Werdum/Vera because if it'll be for the next in line. Kongo was on his way but dropped the fight with Herring. The young talent just don't have enough wins under their belt for a title fight. Mir has a backstory of former champ who didn't ever lose his title. It also introduces Nog to the UFC audience, which is something they really need. This is probably the best thing to happen to the UFC.

How about the UFC using HW's in TUF since the division could use some new blood.

Well as much as I'd like to have Nogueira get some more exposure as I think he's one of the most skilled fighters at any weight class (though I think this is more about getting Mir's prettyboy face out there a bit more), does this definitively mean Arlovski is out of the UFC? I thoght he would be next in line for a title shot?

Aren't Mir and Nog like... actual coaches who control their own places? I mean, with all the naysaying around I'd like to throw out the positive that the training and the fights may actually provide more to the "hardcore" fan with these two coaches on it. Everyone bitches when TUF doesn't focus on training/fighting, but when they get two coaches who may just be able to coach legitimately in all aspects of the game... everyone bitches?

Always sad how the majority of MMA fans are such whiney little babies. Get over it, enjoy yourselves.

So is Mir getting the next shot? What about winner of werdum vs vera? This is a horrible idea, a poor tv show based around rookie inexperienced fighters holding up yet another title.

I agree with Ronin, if forrest and rampage can't get good ratings, the big nog and Mir will do very poorly. Why is TUF such a big part of the UFC, why should it have so much power over the titles?

If the UFC wants to have coaches, then i think neither should be holding a title. It's getting ridiculos how many title shots there are each year. The LW title has been in a bad spot for a while held up from July07 to Mid Jan08, the WW was on hold from July07 to April08, the LHW belt hasn't been fought since UFC 75 last Sep, now the HW belt is going to be on hold too from Feb08 to possibly Oct/Nov08. That's very poor from the 'premier' MMA organisation. The LHW belt will have been on hold for 11 months for Christs sake when R&F fight, and they havn't been injured?????

It beggers belief how a program based around rookie fighters has to have such an impact on two fighters careers.

First of all... Nog looks like a great coach... don't know how Mir will do though.
Second... I'd read here in the newspaper that an Israeli fighter named Ido Pariente is on the show... he's got a good record and is actually really good.
he's a LW with lots of experience and a brown belt in JiuJitsu under Royler.

I might be the only one, I like this idea. Sure Nog looks and sounds like a bag of hammers hit his face, his story is very intriguing with his twin brother, thats he is only Pride and UFC HW champ.
I think it could work why not if Forrest and Rampage can't lift TUF rating nothing can the style of the show has just gotten stale.

I might be the only one, I like this idea. Sure Nog looks and sounds like a bag of hammers hit his face, his story is very intriguing with his twin brother, thats he is only Pride and UFC HW champ.

Why would I answer that question? It has zero to do with whether or not affliction is a threat to the UFC.

I think that TUF should take a few season's off, and let the number of young hungry fighters who need a shot build up. Look at that first season, some pretty good fighters came out of it, Kos, Sanchez, Leben , Florian, Quarry, Griffin, Bonnar, and Swick. I remember reading a quote that essentially said that everyone in the house that season was there because they loved to fight, and wanted to get better and be the best. Now it seems like some of these guys just want 15 minutes of fame, and to be able to say they were on TV.

I thought Hughes and Franklin were great coaches, and they didn't fight each other, but I enjoyed watching them.

this pisses me off just enough to not watch TUF anymore. Damnitt!! I firmly believe in it being about the fighters and not the promotion/Dana/Shaw or whoever, but this really does irritate me. I know it isn't delaying Nogs scheduled fight that long, but I just can't help but think back to the Serra mess.

I just don't like them holding up the belts for TUF. And does it really boost the ratings that much to have these guys coach?

Damn, they have such a long time between title fights as it is.

Lotsa angst about this announcement but I'll bet that everybody who complained will also watch the show. Anybody who posts here is a complete MMA whore (myself included) who will watch the dregs of MMA because it's still better than American Idol or Survivor.
