Kimbo Slice Open Training Session (video)
May 12, 2008 by Adam Morgan
Here’s a quick video of an open training session with Kimbo Sluce that was held at Bas Rutten’s Elite MMA gym just recently. If you’re wondering what the music is and why you’ve heard it before, that’s because it’s “Heart’s on Fire” from Rocky IV.
HT: Bloody Elbow

thanks for the chessy 80’s style music..I’m over watching Kimbo train video’s…
alot of people must have alot of free time on their hands…
Say what you will about Kimbo, the dude is damn watchable.
He’s like a bizarro, bat-shit crazy, older, Rampage when he talks.
Seriously, if Rampage Jackson was the protagonist in a Sci-Fi movie where he inadvertently activated his good friend/world renowned mad scientist friend’s time machine and ended up in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are near extinction and battling suped up terminator spiders, Kimbo is like Rampage’s grizzled nutso future-self that inevitably saves Rampage at the end allowing him to come back to our time and warn us about experimenting with robot spiders.
so much hype for someone who has done nothing.
You know Evan, in my heart I agree with you.
He has 2 mma fights and 1 exhibition fight against low level competition. Now that I have no problem with and I don’t understand why people think he should be fighting Fedor or something. Let him get 8-10 fights under his belt and then we can discuss his competition level.
Unfortunately, my brain tells me that all of this hype is not necessarily warranted, but it is needed, and more. Whether or not mma fans like it, he IS headlining what could turn out to be, one of the most important cards in the sport’s history. Do you or I need to see videos of him training or KOing Cantrell? Absolutely not. But EXC, CBS and whoever else, must drum up as much publicity and hype as they can in order for this to be a success and to draw eyeballs to the TVs. MMA fans, hardcore and casual, won’t be enough for this to work. It will take new fans, haters, curiosity seekers and more for this to be much more than a short lived experiment.
Sadly, this type of promotion tends to isolate the true mma fans and I think one side effect of that, is the distaste for Kimbo that clogs the net everyday.Kind of reminds me of the Roger Huerta PR machine that the UFC has going strong. Fortunately he has lived up to at least some of the hype and I think it will be good if Kimbo can do the same.
bjjdenver Roger Huerta is a beast and he fights top level competition, you can not say the same about Kimbo, so i have no clue what your talking about.
Is this guy a superhero?
my god he is the man!
He tooled MMA hall of fame legend tank in minutes like a straght animal
then showd slick bjj vs boxing legend mercer
can he be stopped?
hes like the Michael Jordan of mma
hahhhahahahah man it sucks to grapple with boxing gloves…..
This guy is just too much, Kimbo is the future of the sport
John,
I never said he wasn’t. However, if you get in the wayback machine and set it for about a year ago, you will find that many people were on the blogs/forums complaining about how Huerta had fought nobody and that he was being fed a string of guys making their UFC debuts. imo, a lot of that changed after the Guida fight and somewhat after the elbowing Crane while looking at the big screen in the arena. Remember, at that time, Leonard Garcia was little known, as were most of his opponents. The common belief was that UFC was feeding him easier opponents/matchups and building him up as a big time fighter, when he had proven little.
Now, in retrospect, we see that some of his opponents were pretty good and that he is a tough exciting fighter.
If you think this is wrong, ask anyone around, I’m pretty sure they will remember what I am talking about.
As for comparing it to Kimbo, I’m saying that I hope he turns out to be a solid fighter, just like Huerta has. El Matador…that is spanish for The Matador!
I don’t think 12 year olds can afford a ppv if kimbo actually had one. People only watch his youtube fights…hes kindove a lamer in my eyes till he fights more then washed up fighters besides he got beat by ganooon. only 8 posts on kimbo too. I don’t think anyone really cares about him but media tries to bring more threads and articles on him.
Nobody was talking about Huerta like they were Kimbo, its not even the same ball park.
Kimbo is like a superhero!
the guy is unstoppable on the street and in mma
he destroys mma legends like tank
then he dismantles boxing legends with slick as hell BJJ skills
then he trains like an animal
ive never seen anything like this on all access
Kimbo is all everyone is talkin about at the barber shop and at work
its crazy!
Really? I would say the hate towards Huerta and his fans was very close to what Kimbo is getting.
The main argument was that he was fighting hand picked nobodies and being built up when other UFC fighters deserved it more than he did, yet were getting little PR.
Kimbo is getting a lot of PR that people don’t think he deserves yet. In fact people think that other fighters deserve it more (they are probably correct). sounds pretty similar to me.
I never said they were exactly the same, simply that it reminded me of the Huerta talk from a year ago.
Sorry if you disagree, that is your opinion.
Kimbo is like washed up towel!
the guy beats guys at local mcdonalds and guys that have losing records or have gloass chins
he destroys mma scrubs like tank
then he dismantles boxing legends with slick as hell BJJ skills
then he trains like an animal (that may b true)
People know kimbo is hype
Kimbo who cares anymore
apparentl a lot of ppl care about kimbo
type in his name on youtube
one of his videos has ove 20 MILLION HITS Bro
now if he gets a % of those ppl to watch him on CBS
expect the NIKE DEAL thats in the works to speed up and happen sooner
Kimbo is a true threat to any HW in the world
Super fast
Slick BJJ
Great Takedown Defense
and the Best Striker at HW in MMA
The guys that watch his youtube wont see him fight on ppv.
He hasen’t beat top ten competition
I give him that he is a decent fighter and would watch him, buti wouldn’t pay 15 bucks to watch him fight thompson who has a glass chin
1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
3. Randy Couture
4. Tim Sylvia
5. Andrei Arlovski
6. Fabricio Werdum
7. Gabriel Gonzaga
8. Cheick Kongo
9. Mirko Filipovic
10. Ben Rothwell
donny you are a moron, he isn’t the best striker as a heavyweight in mma, and since no one has seen him on the ground yet i wouldn’t be rating his bjj skills.
What’s Bas doing here ?, Is he really too injured to compete again? He looks good in these training videos! Make a comeback Bas.
“my brain tells me that all of this hype is not necessarily warranted”
your brain tells you to be an uptight smart ass. my brain looks at kimbo and projects his obvious skills and top training team into the potential greatness that he can achieve in the sport, and will at the very least achieve in short, exciting spurts.

wow, what a foolish comment. Do you feel better about yourself now?
Where am I being a smartass??
Since you apparently have a comprehension problem, let me simplify my comments for you.
I don’t think Kimbo has established in the cage that he should be the most popular fighter in the world, it just doesn’t balance with his accomplishments. HOWEVER, I do think he should be getting all this hype and more, in order to spread the popularity of mma to non-fans.
I also respect the dedication he has put in to his training and hope he succeeds to live up to all the hype.
You are in such a hurry to try and look smart, that you actually decided to “call out” someone who agrees with you.
he is a hard working, exciting, polarizing fighter. If he succeeds it will be good for mma as a more widely accepted sport.
Next time, instead of calling people names, why don’t you spend a little time reading and understanding the post. Maybe you will realize that you are commenting on something that basically agrees with your stance.
And if your going to quote someone, why don’t you use the statement in its entirety, not just the part you feel like?
Kimbo is a viscous man, and I can understand why the hype is building around him.
I’ll be excited to see when he can prove himself. EXC will need to start ramping up his competition otherwise the MMA hardcore fans will start to get impatient and we’ll be arguing about hype vs. reality for a long time.
He’s basically EXC’s only star so they will milk him for as long as possible. Maybe if they can land/build some more talent, they won’t have to worry about risking a Kimbo loss.
Did I just see him try to give the quadriplegic a pound?
I am also excited to see him get to step up a level. I really want to see him taken down…. to the ground that is. I am interested to see what kind of ground skills he has. I’m not saying I want him to lose, I just want to see how much more game he has. i think it is a little hard, maybe even unfair to judge him as amazing or terrible, until we get to see his whole skill set. Not saying he should enter the abu dahbis or anything but it would be nice to see him get tested and hopefully pass.
i love his movement and compact punching and he is exciting for sure.
Hands of Steel Scott Smith vs. Ruthless Robbie Lawler is the real main event.but i will still watch Kimbo whoop some ass.
