EliteXC could announce next CBS show on Saturday; Shaw talks ticket sales

EliteXC officials announced at their press conference today that there will not be a CBS show on July 26 as was previously speculated. The next CBS show could be late summer or early fall. EliteXC and CBS need to work out the venue for the next show as well as CBS’ primetime schedule but they could possibly announce the date for the second EliteXC show on CBS at Saturday’s event.
Gary Shaw also estimated that “roughly” 7,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday’s EliteXC: Primetime event on CBS. He also said that he believes 96% of CBS affiliates will be showing the card.

Only 7000? That seems rather low.
I agree TCR.
do you guys know anything about the weigh-ins? are they going to be on friday? are they open to the public?
i don’t think EXC is doing a very good job marketing this event. i won’t be surprised if they give 5000 tickets away in the next few days just to make the place look sold out.
It is low. I imagine that the PRU Center can hold about 15,000 – 20,000.
But think about it, who really wants to pay to see second rate fighters?
Lawler couldn’t make it in the UFC, Baroni couldn’t either and just about every other fighter has a bleak MMA record.
Kimbo is being fed another win. Why pay to go see this?
Let’s run down EliteXC’s main card:
Kimbo- hasn’t beaten anyone of significance yet.
Thompson- one of the weakest chins in all of MMA.
Baroni- Lost his last 4 UFC fights
Villasenor- went 0-2 in Pride
Lawler- improved lately but slumped at the end of his UFC run
Smith- only 1-2 in UFC and his ground game needs a lot of work
Carano- potential star for womens MMA but still unproven and gets a lot of preferential treatment by EliteXC.
Young- for an opponent for Gina isn’t too bad all things considered.
Tickets were pretty cheap as well, especially in comparison with UFC 78 last November. That lackluster 9 fight card with a terrible main event drew 14,000 at the Pru Center. The cheapest ticket for UFC 78 was about $65 for nosebleeds. EliteXC, with 12 fights, had a couple thousand $28 upper deck seats and even some $18. They still have plenty of $43 lower levels available right now. I’m pretty surprised by the low turnout thus far just 2 days from the event. One thing is for sure, the gate will not be paying the fighters salary at this rate. Maybe Shaw is hoping for large walk up sales.
lets not forget that these guys can still put on exciting fights. they may not be the most technical matches but elite xc has generally provided entertaining events.
don’t be so quick to trash fighters because of their history, everyone in the sport is trying to progress and i dont think any of these fighters have peaked yet. these fighters understand it is an important event and will try hard to make it memorable by training their asses off.
kimbo is working his ass off and just so you know, his trainers pick his opponents and kimbo fights who is put in front of him. brock lesnar gets just as many chances in the ufc, mir hadn’t won since his accident (to his credit though he wasnt taking the easy road back) and the previously arranged coleman fight was going to be within his skill. coleman’s most effective weapon of his g&p is his knee’s…which aren’t legal in the ufc.
james thompsons isn’t necessarily a bad fighter, he just can’t pace himself. some fighters are sprinters and james is definately one of them. his key to winning this is to not run into a shit storm of haymakers. we’ll see if his new gym can help him get a good gameplan together.
villasenor: 0-2 in pride, yah but those loses were to ryo chonan (split decision) and ninja rua. anderson silva has also lost to ryo chonan, i guess he sucks too.
lawlers faught some tough guys and come away with wins and loses. mirko lost a couple fights in the ufc too, he’s shit too.
on another note there were some mentions by some people whose CBS affiliates are not carrying the fight in ohio and possibly elsewhere. in its place will be the children’s miracle telethon, most likely followed by reruns.
“The next CBS show could be late summer or early fall.”
If this show doesn’t make enough money, there won’t be another show – all the eggs are in this basket.
wow, “roughly 7000 seats sold”. the rock seats 17, 500 for the devils and more for other events. guess there won’t be too many wide angle crowd shots. i bought $28 tickets about a month ago & the only ones that were sold out at the time were the $18 seats. one thing that i have noticed is that the card has hardly been promoted in the NY metro area at all. the only ad(s) that i noticed were some radio spots run on WFAN(local sports talk station), and they only ran those for about a week after tickets went on sale. i know it’s not a fair comparison, but there are always billboards for EVERY ufc ppv on the heavily traveled NJ turnpike. if they want to sell tickets they need to at least do some decent regional advertising for the event.
Wait a second .. didn’t Shaw brag about a sellout a few weeks ago?

On Junkie I think.
Now I know he said “sold” but does that include comped tickets?
A fight is a good fight if both people involved want to win. I agree Kimbo has been a little pampered. However when you have knock-out power like he does even a top ranked fighter can look like a noboby. Records in MMA aren’t like records in boxing, or other fighting venues. They change one punch or hold at a time. The worst can beat the best, and vice versa. We have seen big fights turn out to be yawners and nobody fighters turn out to be fights of the year. This is in any sport. Elite is still a new venue. I remember going to a UFC fight in Tulsa and paying for nose bleeds and ending up right by the cage due to open seats. the Ultimate Fighter series promotes UFC and Elite doesn’t have that much exposure. I have watched every fight card or almost in both UFC, Elite, World, Pride… hell if they punch each other I’ll watch. I can not say I haven’t been entertained by each at some point and time. I also can not say I haven’t been bored by each at some point and time.
I’ve watched Kimbo back on his You-Tube days and personally I am excited as hell to see him in action. I am excited to see it on Free TV. This type of exposure will boost Elite and help them build a name for themself as well.
Let’s face it Showtime doesn’t do a great job promoting anything if you don’t already sunscribe to Showtime. Boxing, Series, Nothing. Elite XE is no different.
