The Japanese promoters might have been able to sell a doughnut fighter vs. a great fighter to 30,000+ but they couldn't market themselves out of a paper bag in the good ole' USA. Dana White consolidated and created a near monopoly.... good for him if he could do it... he pays 'pretty good to good", the fighters get big time exposure and endorsement potential and the if anybody thinks affliction is staying in the game...think again... They did 8 million in sales last year....8 million!!!!! and they are the deep pockets to take on UFC.... that is laughable. In the end, Dana will have a T shirt, Fedor is my Bitch and Tito is his! 2) The WEC... well, with fights like Faber-Pulver and with fighters like Torres....that IS a superior card in quailty to anything except the very best of the UFC events... I am not hating on the Affliction card... not at all, in fact I cannot wait to see Fedor take on Sylvia but otherwise it's a bunch of UFC cast-offs and Fedor and his bro. The UFC heavyweights are admittedly weak right now but everything goes in cycles and Lesnar, Carwin and a whole new crop of Heavies are what Dana White has brewing and they WILL take down anything Affliction has to offer in 18 months or less. Dana is smart and playing to the future here. Some of those guys will be back for one or wto fight contracts once his new boys have been properly seasoned. 3) Other organizations - Again, white is taking a brilliant Theo Epstein, baseball approach to things... Home grow plenty of your own guys in the draft (TUF), you can let them beat each other up, refine their skills, pay 'em cheap and some will make a name for themselves and then you bring in seasoned outside vets (Herring, Horn, Eastmen, Coleman, et) for a beat down until they are ready for the really big shows. Occasionally cherry pick a real good outside 'up and commer' (Quiton Jackson, maybe a Chung Le type at some point) and you got an unbeatable product and natural feeders. 4) Atmosphere - I see more stars at a 12X per year UFC pay per view than anything but a De la Hoya or Mayweather fights....enough said...when Hollywood is in...the masses WILL follow! Pick on the crowds...and the NY Jets "Show us your T$#@! stadium section chants are classy? What a moronic point! 5) TUF - They WILL refine it...they did this season a bit....and I am sure they will keep throwing in new wrinkles... but does anybody doubt the value of seeing how damn cool, funny and human both Jackson and Griffin are? The real bonus the UFC got by buying Pride was killing off their top rival in the sport. Most wished they would have kept the Pride brand alive but MMA in Japan is different it’s more like pro wrestling with shoot matches. UFC would have done poorly if they would have kept the pride brand alive and promoted in Japan. The WEC maybe has been a better buy b/c they can use this show to showcase LW fighters and not have the hassle of doing events in Japan.
