Thiago Alves fails to make weight
The UFC held their weigh-ins for tomorrow’s UFC 85 event in London earlier in the day, and the big news is that Thiago Alves failed to make weight for Saturday’s main event vs. Matt Hughes.
Alves weighed in at 174 pounds but the match will remain on the card and will be contested as a catchweight. However, you have to wonder what this will do for the stock of Alves in the eyes of the UFC. Should he win, will a victory at catchweight be viewed as a step closer to a welterweight title fight? The fallout should be interesting.
Below are the full results of the weigh-ins:
- Thiago Alves (174) vs. Matt Hughes (170)
- Jason Day (184) vs. Michael Bisping (184)
- Mike Swick (170) vs. Marcus Davis (170)
- Thales Leites (185) vs. Nate Marquardt (185)
- Fabricio Werdum (247) vs. Brandon Vera (228)
- Martin Kampmann (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)
- Thiago Tavares (154.5) vs. Matt Wiman (155)
- Roan Carneiro (171) vs. Kevin Burns (170)
- Luiz Cane (204) vs. Jason Lambert (205)
- Jess Liaudin (169) vs. Paul Taylor (169)
- Eddie Sanchez (244) vs. Antoni Hardonk (247)

All this after the UFC tailor-made the 170 pound division for him.
Completely unprofessional and disgraceful.
Then again, I did hear he had to weigh 190 less than three weeks ago for the taping of Brazilian Gladiators…
What a putz!
Bummer. Put this together with the countdown show where it makes it look like he spends all his free time partying and my opinion of Alves suddenly darkens…
#1 you are #1
wow.
way to fail thiago
Hope Hughes rolls him. Thiago should of stuck with the diuretics.
thats a big difference between 170 and 174, most people miss weight by 1 lb or less, thats a huge difference
Sergio FTW!
addition to #7, unless your a girl, hahaha (gina carano)
What does this say about Thiago? Not making weight, isnt that a sign that your training or your dedication sucks?
Holy crap, he didn’t make weight by 4 pounds? That’s a f*ck-ton to miss weight by.
Very surprised by this, yes the fight was relatively short notice… but seriously if it’s your big break get your ass on a bike in a sauna.
what a fat ass….
this looks like a horrible card btw….
maybe it was the airplane food on the transatlantic flight
its not a horrible card, its a good card, great stylistically matched up fights
it’s not gonna be fat though… cause Thiago is built like a little welterweight tank
it’s probably pretty hard for him to make 170, not that i’m siding with him not making weight or anything, but damn
@#13…. horrible card?!…. are you one of those guys that only likes title fights? whats wrong with you?
the main card fights will sculpt their respective divisions after the #2 and #3 contenders in each weight class
Does he lose money or pay a penalty for failing to make weight?
he should have to pay a percentage of his purse to hughes, isnt he supposed to get a little while to try and shed the last few pounds, i gues if it were 1 or 2 lbs they would but 4 is a $hit load
I wonder Sam if you could find out the reach of MMA fighters?
I wanted to know if Werdum or Swick has a reach advantage over their opponents.
Four pounds does seem like a lot, but it will be no excuse if hughes loses. remember the david vs goliath days? 4 lbs ain’t shit!
Hahaha…everyone comes up with CONSPiRACY theories about carano, but nothing when here? Isn’t it OBVIOUS Dana white and the UFC are OBVIOUSLY favoring Alves buying letting him disrespect the sport buy coming in heavy?
Missing weight is unprofessional and 4 pounds isn’t even close. Part of me wanted to see Alves win and get some new blood at the top of the division in line for a title shot, but now I hope Hughes beats him down.
I saw that he has to give Hughes 10% of his purse, and Dana said that he isn’t sure this guy should be fighting at Welterweight. Even with a win I don’t think this helps him get in line for a title shot, he has to go back and prove he can make weight again.
dana white did not looked pleased with alves during the weigh ins… it looked like he was about to vomit in disgust at having his main event ruined
