Report: David Baron signs with the UFC

David Baron MMA

Stash Capar of The Fight Network is reporting that the UFC has signed French fighter David Baron to a contract.

Capar is quoting a member of Baron’s camp as the source for the story.

Baron once fought for PRIDE, losing to Takanori Gomi via rear naked choke at 7:10 of round 1 during PRIDE’s Bushido 12 in August of 2006. He also holds a win over recent UFC signing, British welterweight Dan Hardy.

However, it was likely Baron’s upset win over Hayato Sakurai during a Shooto event in Japan last month that earned him a spot with the UFC. In that fight, Baron submitted Sakurai with a rear naked choke at 4:50 of round 1.

There is no word as to when Baron will make his UFC debut or against whom.

I guess my first question is what weight is he going to fight, 170lb or 155lb? And if he is fighting at 170, why the signing? I know they are looking for international talent, but the division is jammed packed right now. The guy haas one big win. Seems pointless other than international public relations.

interesting how the UFC seems to be signing fighters when the mephasis was so much on cutting the roster. It looks like the UFC was “trimming the fat” and used some excuses to do so, and they are investing in more international fighters to promote their shows when they fight over seas. a good business plan, but i would hate to be one of the guys cut watching them sign new fighters

Thats absolutely no reason not to sign someone.

The UFC was always going to continue to sign more fighters. He brings in new and talented fighters and he cuts the underperforming unmarketable ones.

I doubt someone like Tommy Speer is sitting around saying I can’t believe David Baron stole my place in the UFC when Baron just defeated a semi-legend of the sport and Speer is 0-2 inside the octagon.

Baron beat Sakurai and didn’t look all that bad against Gomi. He is 15-2. 13 of those wins were stopped before the final bell. The two guys that beat him are a combined 40-6-1. Why wouldn’t they sign him?

It makes perfect buisness sense. They may want to have a show in France sometime. They have Chiek Kongo already. why not?

I don’t think they will be having a show in France anytime soon, considering their limited mma regulations. However, UFC seems to be adding guys like this in order to appeal to several European nations.

He has a legitimate mma pedigree, and it’s not like they are breaking the bank for him. They sign him and if he performs, then great. If not, then it isn’t a big loss when they release him.

My bet is he rematches newly signed Dan Hardy…the UFC loves those pointless rematches.
