Report: Riggs to replace Carter at Strikeforce

According to a report from Sherdog, Joe Riggs will step in to replace Shonie Carter in a bout against Luke Stewart at the June 27th Strikeforce event. The event features a main event of Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce lightweight title.

Carter pulled out of the fight due to a shattered knuckle he suffered in training and was afraid he would not pass the CSAC’s physical inspections next week in order to go ahead with the bout.

Riggs will step in on short notice and the fight will be contested at a catch weight of 178 lbs. due to that fact. Riggs last fought against Corey Devela at “Strikeforce At The Dome” in February, injuring his back when Devela slammed him against the mat early in the first round. Riggs has since undergone surgery to repair the spinal cord damage and will be stepping into the cage for the first time since the surgery.

i don’t presume to know anything about joe riggs’ health, but i hope for his sake that he’s not rushing into fighting again. didn’t he get carried out on a stretcher after his last fight? hopefully nothing similar (or worse) happens this time. good luck diesel.

Riggs has had a lot of bad luck in his career, and I wish him well in his comeback.
