EliteXC officially announces fights and location for next CBS show on July 26

102393_diftppgmqf_vlarge.jpg EliteXC issued a press released Wednesday afternoon to announce that the next installment of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS will be taking place on Saturday, July 26, in Stockton, Calif. at the Stockton Arena.

The CBS telecast will begin at 9 p.m. ET and is scheduled to last two hours in duration. Premium cable network SHOWTIME, a sibling company of CBS’, will be televising a one-hour lead-in of undercard fights starting at 8 p.m. ET.

The release revealed that there will be three title fights on the show. Confirmed is a fight for the vacant EliteXC heavyweight title between Antonio Silva and a fighter that has yet to be announced. Silva’s fight will anchor the SHOWTIME portion of the show.

The main event for “Saturday Night Fights” is a rematch between EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler taking on challenger Scott Smith.

It has also been confirmed that Jake Shields will be competing for the vacant EliteXC welterweight title against former BodogFIGHT welterweight champion Nick Thompson.

The third full matchup confirmed in the release is a lightweight (160 pounds) clash between Nick Diaz of Stockton against King of the Cage veteran Thomas “Wildman” Denny.

While not mentioned in the release, officials from EliteXC have indicated in previous interviews that featherweight Wilson Reis and female fighter Shayna Baszler could be featured either on the CBS card or the SHOWTIME card.

I’m curious to see if they are willing to throw Kimbo to at Bigfoot now, given that Silva will totally destroy him. That is, assuming he’s healed up and from his last fight.

Three title fights, each with the potential to go 29 minutes not including intros and post-fight on a two hour telecast?

    Adjust your DVRs accordingly, boys…

I think this card will be a ratings flop when compared to the first CBS telecast. Who is the casual fan going to want to watch on this card? It’s too bad Lawler has the personality of a board. He’s a dynamic enough fighter to carry a show by himself but there’s more to fighting than what you do in a ring/cage. He needs to take some lessons from Ortiz or one of the Shamrocks.

I also find it quite humorous that the heavyweight title is being contended by TBA. EliteXC had the opportunity to sign some great heavies(hi Josh Barnett) but of course they choose not too.

Why bother signing heavyweights when you have KIMBO SLICE on your payroll?

    like the title fights

    but please oh please
no dancing girls, musical performances, lag between fights that makes the ufc look good, and in a perfect world no gary shaw

at least phil baroni isn’t fighting and we won’t be subject to entrances worthy of the wwe

Wilson deserves to be on the main card for that night. The only other decent match of the night was Lawler/Smith which is bound to be another beauty!!

idk.. i’m suprised with this.. i couldn’t imagine them making a HW title belt and NOT involving Kimbo [the star their business runs on now, at least, to the casual fans] and i suppose they still COULD involve him.. but.. i REALLY don’t see KIMBO/BIG FOOT happening.. i mean, if James Freakin’ Thompson gave hime problems.. i wouldn’t even WANT to see what big foot could do to him [and that's coming from someone who's not even a Kimbo Hater, actually, i root for him]

but if there’s anyone deserving at all right now, aside from Kimbo and Brett Rogers [because i'm sure if Kimbo's not in the title fight.. that SHOULD be the fight he's getting next] it’s Dave Herman..

BUT WAIT, I JUST HAD AN APIPHANY WHEN I WAS WRITING THAT LAST PART.. WHAT IF THEY’RE PUTTING ROGERS IN THERE WITH BIG FOOT HOPING THAT HE’LL WIN, AND THEN GIVING HIM TO KIMBO WHETHER HE GETS THE BELT OR NOT.. BECAUSE THEY KNOW KIMBO HAS MORE OF A CHANCE WITH ROGERS THAN BIG FOOT!!! Ultimately, they want Kimbo as champ, AND, they know that there’s a lot of talk surrounding Kimbo/Rogers..

idk.. that seems useless.. because.. if that’s what they want.. why wouldn’t they just NOT include Big Foot in the title fight?? idk..

If I had 3 wishes, my third wish would be that elitexc would just go away.

My first two would be to be rich and Jessica Biel.

I agree with #4. This card lackls starpower. With the Kimbo backlash, EXC’s biggest draw is Gina Carano. I heard CBS was pressuring Gina Carano’s camp for a fight but they declined (smartly). Gina was looking extra thick at the Kim Couture fight last week.

Nick, why would you want to be Jessica Biel? This really confuses me, because it could alter my plans for her to be mine.

“Three title fights, each with the potential to go 29 minutes not including intros and post-fight on a two hour telecast?”

The actual press release at Proelite.com says two title fights will be on CBS and one title fight (heavyweight with Antonio Silva) will headline the Showtime portion.

  • Sergio G. Hernandez says:

William W.: That’s weird that they wouldn’t want to have the crowning of their first Heavyweight champion on network TV.

But then again, EliteXC doesn’t play by the same rules as the rest of us…

This could actually be a pretty good (and relevant) card. My only big problem is that, this card is a month out, and they don’t have a name to fight Bigfoot for the title. Rogers, Herman, or Roy Nelson would be a good name to put in against him if they can finalize it and give them time to prepare.
