I hear ya Huck. Look, I like Gilbert and he has a bright future, but what exactly had he done to be considered a top 10 LW? He beat Kawajiri and Guida, both by decision. I'm not saying I knew Thomson would win (I didn't) but the difference between them was probably marginal. Gilbert doesn't have KO power or elite striking. He's tough as nails and is strong with very good BJJ. But he might be the most overrrated LW since any current Japanese LW.

DAMMIT I knew Thomson would beat Melendez.

Future reference: any statement I ask to the participants I believe. I just thought it was such a rare thought I had to be wrong even though I knew he'd win. I don't want to be the ass to pick the huge upset and be wrong. Damn you people. I miss out on picking big upsets all the time because I hear 40 people say I'm wrong before the fight.

Actually I don't mind when they agree if they bring different points. That is actually what made me side with the Junkie. Even when he agreed I liked the points he made better. For instance on the officiating question he said that people who screw up should be gone, not sent to the minor leagues. Caplan made a good point about Diaz yo-yoing on weight and that taking a toll on his body.

I liked this article so much that I CALL FOR A REMATCH.

As long as each person presents an original perspective with unique points, it doesn't matter whether they agree or disagree.

The duel is a good column as is--bloated, manufactured arguments wouldn't add a thing. Keep up the good work.

I understand that but again this isn't PtI or Baseball Tonight on ESPN where we make up arguments. Both people say what they have to say and nothing is heard beforehand or planned. I could probably play devil's advocate on anything but that just makes me look stupid if I'm going against what I believe.

A little diasagreement goes a long way, Huck. I love this column, but to be honest, it's a tad redundant when it turns into a "You're right!!", "No, YOU'RE right!!!" competition. Good information, but not much of a duel at all.

I agree that Tanner is not his former self, but he isn't the punching bag who get's KO'd every fight that Ken Shamrock is either, and Shamrock is still fighting (if you can call it that) although I am not sure for how long...

I don't understand why so many people think Diaz will have a chance against Noons, considering that Diaz is a meathead pothead (I guess he has kiddy glaucoma) who seems to think he is a member of the 50 cent "posse". All things considered, Noons should beat Diaz up again and perhaps make him look like a very rare hamburger after being half eaten by
David Hasselhoff during a drunken stupor.

On the judging issue, Junkie is most correct. But I would also have liked either "Duelist" to have also engaged the Meragliotta issue as it does seem pertinent, considering that it was also a case of very shoddy officiating.
Be it judge or ref, if you are completely incompetent then you deserve to be out of the business.

On a point of interest, have any of you seen the movie "Duel" with Dennis Weaver? A 1971 movie of a guy driving a Plymouth Valient who pisses off some Peterbuilt driving trucker and getting chased through the desert in a "game of death". Perty cool, I can tell you that!

I call this one a sister kisser. With the deciding question being the Evan Tanner retirement I have to say Caplan and Junkie made really good arguements. Tanner did look old and done but at the same time maybe this is the best way for him to make decent money; albeit for 2-3 more fights. Realistically though, at Tanner's age continuing to fight is only prolonging the inevitable. I don't know. Bartender!! Give me another drink!!

I know this went up later on a Friday but I find it odd a Duel between our two biggest MMA blog stars ends up with 8 responses in like 5 hours.

I'm sure it got tons of views but you fellas need to bring the OUTRAGE to make people comment. Say you hate Asian people or something.

#3,

ummm... for me.. in a perfect world.. it would be Diaz over Noons BRUTAL KNOCKOUT.. but.. i'd be fine with a sub.. :)

there's one problem with Nick..
it's gotten to where he likes to strike so much, that he'll only go to the ground if his opponent makes him.. he'll go for the occasional takedown.. but he never follows through.. he just tries.. and once they sprawl.. he stops, backs up, and continues to strike.. and that can cause problems when facing someone like "King Karl" [i hate that name].

i mean, there's one reason he lost the first bout [aside the fact that he seemed slow and choppy] and that's because i wanted to strike..

i have total confidence in nick's striking.. but i'd feel WAYYYYY better if he'd just get it to the ground.. and do what he does best.. i mean, if he just worked on getting the fight to the ground early on.. he could get the win in the 1st round.. no doubt..

Don't call me Lefkowitz, but I scored it 3-1 junkie (5&6 were ties). Sam got a late-round knockdown in question 4 with his "middle game" explanation, but couldn't overcome the first 3 questions. Great writing from both though.
