Brandon Vera: “I’m not dodgin’ nobody”
Posted by Adam MorganMMA Rated conducted an interview with Brandon Vera where he puts to rest rumors that he dodged a fight against Lyoto Machida at the July 19th UFC Fight Night 15 show as well as confirms that he was offered a fight against Wanderlei Silva and Dan Henderson but says they were in no shape to take the fight at that time.

you can’t blame the guy..
if there’s one person i DEFINITELY WOULD NOT take on short notice.. it’d be Machida.. plus, Vera just had back to back losses against Sylvia and Werdum.. why would he go RIGHT back to top notch competition.. ESPECIALLY if it’s his first time at that weight class.. he had all the right in the world to turn that down..
Rich, thank you for typing what was in my head while I was watching that.
Who does wanna fight Machida? The line to fight that dude is short. I’m sure if he was offered James Irvin he would have taken the fight.
rich: i totally agree with you, but at the same time, i think it’s weird for vera to say “hell yeah” to fighting guys like henderson, or wanderei. their styles may not be as odd as machida’s, but they seem like fights he shouldnt be so anxious to take on short notice. maybe i’m reading too much into it.
also, i still see jardine (or the loser of rampage/griffin) being the next to fight machida. unless they give him an up and comer “tune up” before a title fight, there arent many options left. if jardine can get off as many nasty kicks as he did against chuck, it could be an interesting fight.
either way, the next couple months are gonna be fun.
ummm not taking a fight with 6 weeks notice is dodgin that fighter the “I want more time to prepare” is an excuse plain and simple and I’m a vera fan I hope he does what he says he’s gonna do more fighting less talking.
That is a lot of respect Vera is showing to his July 19 opponent, Reese. Watch Reese come out and McDonald him into respect.
I will never forget McDonald beating Herman, and him sayhing he is no one stepping stone. That is kind of what Vera is doing…..He is saying that he needs time to fight someone good like Machida, so instead he will take a fight where he doesnt need as much time to prepare.
I dont know much about this Reese guy, but you know Vera’s actions have to pump him up a little extra
Ugh, Jardine vs Machida seems like the worst possible match-up to me. Jardine will throw leg kicks and body kicks while Machida throws quick combos and that’s it. Unless Machida decides to shoot and take Jardine down, it’s going to resemble a non-padded sparring match. File me under “not excited at all.”
I’d love to see Machida against someone very aggressive — Thiago Silva would be a supurb matchup, with the winner getting a title shot.
@ #6: A lot of fans would appreciate Silva-Machida, (I would!) but even i Dana actually believes in Machida I think he is business savvy enough not to go there. Isn’t Silva a bit of a tentative golden boy right now? I mean, he fights exciting, looks cool and is aggressive. And is a good fighter.
Machida makes people look bad. I wonder if UFC - outside of a title match, which is a different deal - would given him to someone without an already tainted record. Jardine seems like a logical choice. Jardine is higly respected, but has taken a few heavy losses and won’t really loose that much in market value if he loses against Machida.
Then, of course, I don’t think that anyone can imagine Jardine beating Machida. Thiago Silva might, Rampage might. But what will outside punchers like Jardine and Griffin do to beat him? Outstrike with distance punches? Sounds like scifi to me.
But still, I believe that the Jardine match might happen.
I’m in full agreement for Thiago Silva vs Machida. We need to see how Machida deals with an agressive opponent like that. Also, because of his last fight a lot of people are making Machida out to be non aggressive. But just look at his fight against Sokodjou. He really took it to him and totally owned him all over the cage. I think Machida adapts to who he is fighting and fights the intelligent fight. Thiago Silva is the perfect matchup, they are both undefeated, Thiago is hungry. Houston Alexander is another possibility. Someone that will take the fight to him.
He most certainly is ducking Machida. And I understand why.
Perhaps he should have dodged Werdum some more in that fight and he might have won.
dogging machida may be smart but if you dog machida you best
dogging machida may be smart but if you dog machida you best dog silva and henderson. i guess henderson and silva are just punks like reese and haven’t earned the respect that machida has in his huge victories.
Isn’t the quote in the lede a double negative that means he is dodging somebody? Like when Melvin Guillard said I ain’t no bitch?
@#14 your anal mastery of english is complete!
Your brain sometimes functions subconsciously like that Vern. When you are trying to lie (in this case about ducking) it figures out a why to tell the truth. In this case the double negative.
why, way - Same thing… Maybe I need some of Vera’s mastery of the English language…
#15 I mastered your mother anally too
@#16 you might have masturbated anally to the thought of my mother…
lol. last at 18.
I have no interest in seeing Jardine v Machida. I think Machida should get the Rampage/Forrest winner, but if that doesn’t happen, then they could put him in against Thiago for the next shot.
The fight I personally want to see Thiago v Wandy for a title shot after Machida gets one.
Vern you beat me to the punch. Indeed, “I ain’t dodging nobody” equates to “I am dodging somebody”. I guess all fighters can’t have a command of the english language like Kenny Florian, but it would be nice if these fighters actually had a basic knowledge of it.
Nobody can blame him for dodging Machida, however. The guy is technically amazing.
Who cares about a double negative, the guy talked that way the whole time. If its the way he was raised to talk then it has nothing to do why his subconscious trying to tell the truth. Anyway I think people missed the humor in this interview. Vera punked out the interviewer. Lol I gotta say the interviewer was kissing his ass in the end.
ROFLMAO!! @ #18 oWned!
@#24 No. Its two thousand and fucking eight, no one is “owned” by a mom joke anymore. You must be drunk.
wow…a sherdog thread.
@ #25 Quit hatin’ fool, damn..
