Report: “Razor” Rob vs. Cerrone planned for WEC’s Sept. event
An intriguing lightweight matchup between 155 lbs. fighters “Razor” Rob McCullough and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is planned for the WEC’s Sept. 10 event, according to a report at MMAWeekly.com.
The fight has yet to be officially announced by the WEC, however, MMA Weekly is citing “sources close to the fight” as its source.
McCullough is a former WEC lightweight champion who lost the title at WEC 32 this past February when he suffered a third round TKO against current champ Jamie Varner. He returned to the win column after recording a split decision victory over Kenneth Alexander at WEC 34 this past June.
Cerrone, considered one of the top lightweight prospects in all of MMA, is a perfect 8-0 in his young mixed martial arts career. He made his WEC debut last September, where he defeated Alexander at 0:56 of round 1. However, the decision was eventually ruled as no contest after the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Cerrone for testing positive for a banned diuretic.
He returned from his suspension this past June on the same show in which McCullough defeated Alexander. In that fight, it took Cerrone just 1:30 into the first round to submit late replacement Danny Castillo with an armbar.
A win by Cerrone over McCullough could put him next in line for a shot at the WEC lightweight title.
The Sept. 10 event will be headlined by the return of Paulo Filho, who will be defending his WEC middleweight title in a rematch vs. Chael Sonnen. Also, according to MMA Weekly, the show could be headlined by a WEC featherweight title defense by Urijah Faber against Mike Brown.

Can’t wait for this fight. Pulling for Cerrone. Another example of the WEC having the best matchmaking.

This definitely is the “test” for Cowboy. A win and I would say he gets a title shot. his jj is solid, but he is a great example of finding a move and doing it as well as he can. I’ve seen him fight several times, and he loves the armbar.

Only way Cowboy wins is by submission. If Razor can avoid being arm barred or triangled he wins handily
