Karo Parisyan: “I’ve been too talented to train”

Sometimes it’s really amazing what comes out of Karo Parisyan’s mouth but this time it’s the honest truth. Karo is a great fighter with lots of heart, unbelievable Judo, a great trash talking game to hype a fight, and the natural talent to be one of the best fighters in the world. But he’s never been in phenomenal shape going into a fight. He always looks chubby and pasty and it almost always looks like the fighter across the cage from him is in better shape. Now Karo’s finally come out and said it himself. From FightTicker.com:
But at this point I want to make an example of Yoshida and everyone else who’s going to stand in front of me until I can get my title shot and get my title. Eventually it will happen I just gotta take the fight game very serious. My worst enemy has always been that I’ve been too talented to train, and now it’s catching up with me. I gotta start training or those guys will start catching up with me.
Note to Karo: Those guys have already started catching up to you. Thiago Alves was one of them and it may be too little, too late for Parisyan to get back to the top of the welterweight ladder. If he’s just now realizing that even though he has that natural ability but has to train to achieve elite status then his time may have passed him by. He was at the top once and got injured. He worked his way back to the top again and got beat by Alves and got bumped back down a notch. Is Parisyan a gatekeeper at 170 lbs.? Maybe, maybe not.
A win against Yoshiyuki Yoshida would surely do him some good in getting some confidence back and making his way back to the top. But if the same Karo Parisyan that showed up against Thiago Alves shows up against Yoshida then he will most certainly have his hands full and then some. Yoshida is not a fighter that Parisyan can take lightly and is one of the better international talents that the UFC has signed in recent months. Talent alone can only get you so far in this sport. Parisyan has reached that peak. If he can take it to that next level, the welterweight division should be on watch.

It never surprises me when these guys show how big their ego is. You have to have a massive ego to do what they do.
However…Karo is equal part ego and stupidity.

i’d love to see this guy as a TUF coach. the soundbites alone would be gold. and it damn sure wouldn’t hold up any title defenses.

sounds like more talking and not enough training from Karo. we’ll see if he sticks to his plan. i’m looking forward to him losing then blaming people around him like his family again…

Yeh, Karo lost because you are too ‘talented’ to train.
hmmm…I think you lost because you ate a flying knee to the head. Being fat and pasty had nothing to do with it.

i like karo, hes got legit skills, and i tend to ignore things said by fighters. hes only lost to alves diego and gsp at that weight, no biggie, he will just have to work harder to get back on top. people seem to confuse fighting and personality traits.

Karo does have skills. But, he is one of many at this point, and saying things like that only decrease his credibility. He should fight for Affliction or EliteXC, he can hold a belt there…

If he can do what BJ did, focus and get 100% committed to training, he could definitely get a title shot. Forget about his personality, he went the distance with GSP and beat Serra, Nick Diaz, and Burkman. He’s not going to be the favorite against any of the current top contenders (Fitch, Alves, Kos), but he could beat any of them if he performs at his best.
GSP, on the other hand, is a different story. And so is BJ Penn, who might be fighting him come the end of the year. If BJ wins, he could end up being who Karo has to fight. Could be an interesting proposition.

Karo relpies: “Only if I’m guarding the gates of Mariah Carey’s mansion.”
“You know who I am? I’m guarding the gates of this mansion, mo-fo. What was that? You wanna get wise? I’ll get you in an eff’n triangle, jack ass. Just don’t push me too hard, I just hit the In N’ Out Burger. Huh? Double Double with cheese. Ow! Are you eff’n kicking me? Why I’m gonna… Damn, I gassed. Dude stop punching me, I gassed…. Damn, I gotta start training.
What’s that? I’m fired? Dude let me talk to Mariah, we can work this out. Alright alright I’m leaving…”

And I’d pay you ten bucks for a damn fine haircut. Now if you’ please, I’ve got another gatekeeper to interview.
To those following at home, I don’t think Karo is actually a gatekeeper. That would be Chris Lytle’s job. I rate Karo about 6th in the division if you count BJ Penn.
I’d like to see him fight Kos if he wins his next fight. Winner is next in line after BjJ Penn and Alves.

Yeah, Parysian is good, but his ego is HUGE…
Just as Rick Flair always says, “To BE the man, you have to BEAT the man!”
One should do his talking after he attains his goals, otherwise he will look pretty foolish when he loses. And considering that he thinks he is better than everyone means he will probably lose.
And calling out Nate Diaz during TUF was ridiculous; What next? Will he start beating up school kids to show his MMA prowess?
“Dude, get back on your Huffy bicycle, you don’t want none of this!” lol

Being a judoka myself, I do enjoy watching Karo fight. I do however, like everyone else, question his attitude and work ethic. My fav fighter, BJ Penn, has been a victim of his own talent before as well, and has since dedicated himself to training seriously. I hope Karo can do the same. And maybe mix in some humility as well

LOL @ #18!
I know what you’re thinking. “Is he too talented to train?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a Hot tempered Armenian, the most powerful Armenian in the world of Judo, and would blow your head clean off with strikes, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

what i want to know is if karo and nick diaz have anymore brothers/sisters/cousins/other family members that are of fighting age. they could have a season of tuf, team diaz vs team parysian. it would be the gay, stupid, and funny all at the same time.

I get so sick of armchair internet warriors questioning fighters like Karo’s ability. He has been beating grown men since he was kid and started fighting and kicking ass in the UFC before half of you knew what the hell MMA was.
Diego trains like a dog and barely beat Karo who gassed mid 2nd round. If he trains to his potential he would be a real threat to take the belt.
BJ and Karo are freaks with extraordinary reflexes, natural speed and skill that will always puts them three steps ahead of their opponents. BJ woke up, let’s see if Karo can.

He’s just making excuses.
Whether conciously or unconcously.
Many people who are afraid of failing at their ultimate goal unconsciously put obstacles in front of themselves so they have excuses & can project blame away from themselves.

No one’s really questioning Karo’s talent or even his toughness. I want to see him do well because he’s one of the few guys in MMA with a judo background and he’s been around for a long time.
But at this stage in the game, after MMA has been the talk of the sporting world for a few years, going from practically banned to being bigger than boxing, how can a guy who is in perhaps the top 5 of his division, who was in line for a title shot, in fact only one win from a locked title shot, not take his training and preparation dead seriously? The best guys in any sport (see Bird, Jordan, Ali, Armstrong, etc.) are guys that have a ton of talent AND train just as hard or harder than anyone else. There’s no excuse for not being prepared to the best of your ability for every fight at this stage of the game.
Karo getting a title shot and maybe somehow pulling a win means millions for him financially (in future purses, endorsements credibility for his gym, etc.). Never mind what it means for any athlete to win the sports biggest prize. How can he not be at his absolute best when he is that close to the top?
I think #37 might be on to something. But I’m rooting for Karo to turn it around. He’s not my favorite fighter but I’d like to see him raise his game and get a title shot. He just needs maturity I guess, like BJ Penn suddenly acquired. He’s not as talented as Penn, who won the BJJ world championships after training jits for only 3 years, but he is a seriously high level judo player with very good submission skills. He needs to improve his stand up, though, if he’s going to challenge whoever is champ (BJ Penn, cough, cough…)

Everyone has such a short memory. He was completely outpointing Alves in that fight until he got caught with that knee. i doubt very much that he would have been able to finish him, but I saw the fight going the distance in favor of Karo. That being said, he is a cocky asshole and would do well to take all his fights seriously. Every fight he loses pushes his shot at the title back 1 year at least.

I still want to date Karo. He is so handsome and seems like a great guy. I’ll cook, clean, and do his laundry while he trains to be the best fighter in the world.
