Report: Chris Lytle signs extension with the UFC; set to face Paul Taylor at UFC 89

July 16, 2008 by Sam Caplan

clipboard01-1.jpgWelterweight veteran Chris Lytle has signed a four fight extension with the UFC, MMAjunkie.com reported on Tuesday.

Citing Lytle’s agent Ken Pavia as their source, Junkie also is reporting that Lytle will return to the Octagon at UFC 89 on Oct. 18 at the NIA in Birmingham, England. While it has yet to be officially announced by the UFC, the report indicates that Lytle’s opponent is expected to be UK-native Paul Taylor.

Lytle is 25-16-5 overall and 4-8 lifetime in the UFC. He last competed at UFC 86 on July 5, losing a unanimous decision to Josh Koscheck. Despite his status as a UFC fighter, Lytle continues to work full-time as a firefighter in the Indianapolis-area.

UFC 89 is scheduled to be headlined by a middleweight bout between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben.

Also he looks like a young Chuck right there.

WTF! Lytle got mugged by the Predator!! LOL!

He is the definition of a gatekeeper, but in a good way.

  4. Rich S. on July 16th, 2008 2:28 pm

i wouldn’t say he’s a gatekeeper.. because.. he’s not really the type of guy that people who need a gatekeeper can beat.. i mean, he dominates anyone that’s “coming up”.. it’s just he loses to the vets..

Why is it that Lytle can compile a losing record and really not look that great in most of his fights only to get a four fight contract, when other fighters talk of losing 2 or 3 sometimes tough fights (Wanderlei, Grove) and worry about their jobs?

just a guess jackl but I assume chris doesn’t make as much.

i wonder if we’ll see a serra rematch one of these days. put it on a fight night, with gamburyan/diaz and taylor/sadollah

@#5 I disagree that he doesn’t look that good in most of his fights…his losses are all to very tough guys, he doesn’t fight conservatively yet he almost never gets finished, and he always has a good attitude about things. It doesn’t hurt that he was in the TUF comeback show and made it to the finale against serra, either.

That all said, what you’re missing is that he HAS been put to the field before by the UFC many times. It’s just that he always goes somewhere else, wins some fights, and comes back, which is actually exactly how Dana wants things to work. Lytle has been brought back over and over because he works very hard and stays out of the drama.

dude, chris lytle is a bad ass warrior. he lost to koscheck, who has a crazy top dominate style and he still looked like he almost rocked kos a few times. the guy is very well rounded, exciting (except for a handful of his fights), a great competitor and a great sportsman. i’m happy to hear a family man like him is going to be sticking around and putting on more good fights as he rarely disappoints.

Chris Lytle is one of my favourite fighters - he seems to exemplify all that is good about martial arts. He is good for the UFC
