Mauro is abysmal and Frank is underrated ….

    and now has braces?!??!!?

  2. Ryan on July 26th, 2008 8:15 pm

CBS is not airing the fight in Seattle!! I had to call comcast and ask why it wasn’t on the guide and they said because the fight got bumped so CBS can air the torch lighting parade.

Is there anywhere to watch this online?

  3. HexRei on July 26th, 2008 8:39 pm

He looks a little funny with them, but I can see why he wants to straighten his teeth. they look like a 2 year old’s drawing of a human mouth.

  4. Fujin on July 26th, 2008 8:41 pm

If Cris Cyborg doesn’t piss hot, she has the best genetics/training regiment evah.

  5. Evan on July 26th, 2008 8:42 pm

    HexRei

I have a feeling he is preparing for his post fight career. He is very good behind the mic.

    Mr hyperbole is just tiresome…

  6. Fujin on July 26th, 2008 8:42 pm

And Nick Thompson’s neckbeard is glorious.

  7. Matt C. on July 26th, 2008 8:52 pm

The tale of the tape said Cris Cyborg is 23 yrs old… interesting.

  8. Evan on July 26th, 2008 8:55 pm

Matt C maybe their using baseball rules?

  9. Davey D on July 26th, 2008 9:03 pm

Jake just won via choke. Sweet submission. Ater the win he respestfully called out the GSP/Fitch winner. I don’t see that actually happening unless he defect’s from EXC. They should get Sheilds another fight or two this year.

Chris Cyborg looked impressive. A fight with Debbie Purcell or even Gina could be next?

Glad to see Silva getting the HW belt. Feigio sounds like a badass, he whooped that dude.

  10. HexRei on July 26th, 2008 9:05 pm

mauro just namedropped sam caplan! :D “good friend and noted mma journalist”

  11. D on July 26th, 2008 9:07 pm

    nice namedrop! Congrats Sam

  12. Evan on July 26th, 2008 9:08 pm

They keep cycling through crowd mic’s and it sounds very weird since their all at different volumes.

  13. Rich S. on July 26th, 2008 9:13 pm

    man,
i wish i could read Diaz’s mind for just 10 sec..

i don’t see why he took such a beating in the early seconds..

    why doesn’t he block..
    why doesn’t he move..
why does he have mixed performances..

if we could just get the same Nick Diaz every time.. he’d ALREADY be the CHAMPION..

i don’t see how he can take so many punches.. leave his chin right there in the open for the punches.. and then just flip this “KO SWITCH”

i’ll never understand Nick.. but, i love the guy..

    WAR DIAZ!

  14. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 9:21 pm

A much, much better show including the SHO portion. Long term they’ll probably need to integrate some of the freak factor (ie Kimbo) to get more mainstream eyeballs, but this show is so far beyond that abortion in May that Elite should be very excited.

  15. Evan on July 26th, 2008 9:26 pm

    Zack with a ck

    too little too late?

  16. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 9:29 pm

could be. something tells me the ratings for this won’t be good, but they could get some really good post-fight buzz from Chris Cyborg, Feijao, Jake, Nick, and hopefully a serious war between Robbie and Scott (just about to fight as I’m typing). If the buzz is strong and then they show Kimbo, Gina, and KJ vs Nick in October, that could be a HUUUGE show.

  17. craw pop on July 26th, 2008 9:29 pm

did they just compare ali-frazier to smith-lawler.
    These guys are ridiculous

  18. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 9:32 pm

Mauro has lost his shit. He said some of the most post-metaphysical nonsense I’ve ever heard during the Nick/Denny fight.

  19. Evan on July 26th, 2008 9:40 pm

I agree Zack..he’s like the generic step child of Chris Berman.

  20. Davey D on July 26th, 2008 9:42 pm

The action here tonight has been great thus far. The commentary has been incorrect at times. So far so good.

    WAR DIAZ!!!

  21. Evan on July 26th, 2008 9:46 pm

Exc needs to get rid of Mauro and get Kenny Rice.

Everything Mauro says is forgettable and adds little to the fight.

  22. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 9:50 pm

damn…pretty good fight. I wish Scotty could have hung in there a bit longer, but he showed he is tough as nails. both guys are studs.

  23. brett on July 26th, 2008 9:50 pm

    dear robbie,
please dont give up your day job

  24. Rich S. on July 26th, 2008 9:52 pm

    wow..
i don’t think i’ve ever seen a fight where no matter how many times you put the guys together it will be amazing and action packed.. bruuuutal fight..

for a sec there, i thought one of my fav. fighters [Robbie] was out on his feet..

    great win for Rob..

    who’s next? Smokin’ Joey?

  25. Evan on July 26th, 2008 9:53 pm

Rich S….I love it…that would be a great fight!

  26. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 9:53 pm

anyone else notice the suits along the cage waiving off the fights during Lawler/Smith and an earlier Mazzagati fight?

  27. Matt C. on July 26th, 2008 9:55 pm

the production value of this show was waaay better than the first one. This was really enjoyable. And it doesnt hurt that they mentioned Sam’s name on air. :)

  28. Patrick on July 26th, 2008 9:57 pm

Much much better card/fights/damn near everything than the travesty that was the first CBS event. Actually enjoyed this one, good stuff, the sounds those punches that Lawler was nailing Smith with in the body was ridiculous… those were damn near rib crackers.

  29. Patrick on July 26th, 2008 9:58 pm

Oh and also, grats Sam, good to see/hear that quality MMA coverage is being recognized finally. Bravo sir.

  30. HexRei on July 26th, 2008 10:02 pm

@#23 Brett, MMA IS Robbie’s dayjob. The guy has been fighting for a long time, has some good wins, and in fact is ranked the #5 MW in the world on this very site.

  31. Sergio Hernandez on July 26th, 2008 10:06 pm

“Rich S….I love it…that would be a great fight!”

Lawler already clowned Smokin’ Joe via flying knee in Pride.

“has some good wins, and in fact is ranked the #5 MW in the world on this very site.”

And I can’t for the life of me figure out how Lawler is ranked so high. His wins, over fellow UFC rejects, aren’t THAT good.

  32. brett on July 26th, 2008 10:07 pm

@#30 im well aware… i was referring to the dacing

  33. HexRei on July 26th, 2008 10:11 pm

lol, oh ya, that was pretty laughable. he may be tan, but he is definitely still white ;)

  34. Rich S. on July 26th, 2008 10:13 pm

“Lawler already clowned Smokin’ Joe via flying knee in Pride.”

    exactly.

that’s an action packed title fight and a chance for redemption all in one..

  35. Davey D on July 26th, 2008 10:17 pm

I think Smokin’ Joe vs. Ruthless Robbie sounds like a badass match up. Joey has earned it. Overall, the show was quite enjoyable. Still flipped to UFC during the down time though.

5 oz should have a little internet spot on-air down the line. A breaking news segment of sorts. Or an interview on camera with the fight of the night winner? There’s your pitch Sam. That would be cool stuff.

Too bad they didn’t show the whole Bigfoot bout. Seeing Anderson Silva there was cool although they might have jinxed him in becoming the LHW Champ. They sounded nervous just talking about him.

  36. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 10:29 pm

I thought the Elite card was pretty damn compelling. I didn’t switch the channel once. There was a bit of downtime btw Diaz/Denny and Robbie’s fight, but I think the pacing was excellent otherwise.

  37. fightfan on July 26th, 2008 10:45 pm

Not that I really care….but I am surprised NO ONE mentioned, on air nor on mma websites about the ending of Lawler and Smith.

Sure, the kicks were not much but still Lawler kicked Smith(a downed opponent twice) mainly just out of rage and anger because Smith was turtling up and could not hit him anywhere else. And also Herb dean did his usual…..that is quickly running over to the hurt and downed opponent, only to do NOTHING and look clueless to what he should.

Herb Dean is good for that, BUT Mario Y. is EXCELLENT for that. Even when he actually does call a fight, he looks as though he is not sure what he is doing. And both refs get so close and nearly hover over the downed fighter, sometimes the winning fighter doesnt even know what to do, just for a quick instant. And sometimes that is ENOUGH time for a fighter to recover. Refs HAVE to be DECISIVE, PERIOD…..even if it is the wrong call. They have to at least look like they are confident about the call

  38. Sergio Hernandez on July 26th, 2008 10:46 pm

“Sure, the kicks were not much but still Lawler kicked Smith(a downed opponent twice)”

Those kicks were to the body, totally legal.

  39. Jeremy on July 26th, 2008 11:02 pm

Yes, I thought they were illegal until the replay. They were to the body.

  40. Zack with a ck on July 26th, 2008 11:15 pm

At one point tonite you could have been watching, all at the same time, Penn/Sherk Replay, DREAM Replay, and the Elite card on CBS. Times have certainly changed.

  41. BadMonkeyMW on July 26th, 2008 11:44 pm

Hey, Ho! Mauro needs to go!!! What a douche. If I never hear that guy call a fight again I’ll be okay with that.

Overall the fights were all good and they definitely tightened up the pacing of the show. AND, no Gary Shaw in sight, so they may be headed in the right direction.

  42. Davey D on July 26th, 2008 11:58 pm

Another great night for MMA. I bet a lot of people were watching a bit of everything. Only two week’s until UFC 87.

Off topic: I know we have some boxing fan’s here. From what i’ve read. The Margarito/Cotto bout was excellent. AM won via TKO, rd 11. Maywheater should step up and fight Antonio Margarito. Probably not though. Floyd don’t want no part of him.

  43. batman on July 27th, 2008 1:09 am

That was better then some of the UFC cards and it was only two hours on CBS. Sam you are the man, great web site. Nick Diaz was impressive he can really punch hard and he proved it. Jake Shields would kill Jon Fitch. Robbie Lawler needs a tougher opponent, not a washed up UFC reject. Great show, Elite XC is one of the best brands out there and a very underrated Company. It sounds like frank shamrock wants a shot at Robbie Lawler which would be an intersting middleweight bout.

  44. mike wolfe on July 27th, 2008 1:40 am

Cyborg has a deeper voice, less body fat and more muscle than a lot of guys I know. #4 Fujin is right. Carano needs to get some “supplements” before they meet up.

  45. Rich S. on July 27th, 2008 1:46 am

“mainly just out of rage and anger because Smith was turtling up and could not hit him anywhere else”

    well, the kicks were legal..
plus, i don’t think they were out of anger..
Robbie has, by far, one of the most vicious “killer instincts” in the sport..
look back on the Ninja fight.. everything was routine until he thought Ninja was hurt, then you could see he wound his arms all the way behind his back and to the other side of his body just to throw a punch.. and when Ninja was on the ground.. you could see him lifting his arms as high as possible to drop all that power..

as soon as he sees a chance to win.. he does whatever he can to keep the action at a max to stop the fight..

he was just excited.. that’s all..

  46. doubleA-ron on July 27th, 2008 4:10 am

Overall a great show and well put together compared to the last one. Man I can’t beleive they let a dude fight a girl in that first match on cbs. Atleast that’s what it looked like. I felt sorry for shayna, she did’t deserve that beating. I wonder if they ever told that cyborg she hits like a man!

  47. Rich S. on July 27th, 2008 4:19 am

Shayna’s just lucky none of those knees landed.. otherwise.. lights out.. completely..

  48. ACK! on July 27th, 2008 8:25 am

Anyone else noticed that Sam was mentioned during the broadcast? I think that makes him the first MMA journalist ever mentioned on prime time network TV. Nice.

  49. slap yo mammy on July 27th, 2008 8:26 am

man, i thought i was coming to Five Ounces of Pain for some actual fight coverage. And you guys are the “Pro Elite insiders” right?? HA!

  50. Jeremy on July 27th, 2008 9:01 am

Overall, I thought it was ok, but nothing special.

How many of the fights were great fights?

Nick Diaz won an entertaining bout, but his performance did nothng to convince me he is a top tier fighter.

Fighting like that, he won’t make it out of the first round with Noons.

Shields pulled out a convincing win over a quality opponent.

Smith/Lawler was great and really made the show, but the rest was simply ok.

  51. Matt C. on July 27th, 2008 9:07 am

“And you guys are the “Pro Elite insiders” right” what does that even mean?

  52. ryan on July 27th, 2008 10:00 am

    SAM
or anybody can you tell me why Gomi is fighting a new opponent at WVR next show. i thought that he was going to fight Hordoki(?spell) ?????
is it because the ufc bought the ifl and control his contract??
    thanks

  53. JollyDV on July 27th, 2008 10:13 am

I really enjoyed this show so much more than the first. What a way to step it up!!

Shayna was totally outmatched. Cyborg is scary! Gina was pumped, etc. Girl, you will get your ass handed to you on a paper plate when you fight Cyborg.

Denny took a beating and just keep going. Props to the 37 year old in the pink shorts!

Lawler/Smith II was good. Smith just seemed not to be in the fight like he should have been. It was as thought he would clinch and then start day dreaming.

  54. Evan on July 27th, 2008 10:23 am

ryan I am pretty sure he is still under contract with the IFL

  55. BadMonkeyMW on July 27th, 2008 10:46 am

#43, Shields would kill Jon Fitch?? Are you serious?? Shields looked great last night, but Josh Thompson isn’t Jon Fitch’s towel boy on his best day. GSP or Fitch take Shields to school on any day.

  56. Cathedron on July 27th, 2008 10:46 am

That was way better than I ever expected. It was an improvement in every way. All the fights were entertaining or better. The show kept up a brisk pace with very little downtime. Hell, they even kept a leash on Diaz. The only bad thing I can say about it is the announcing was still weak. Frankly, Elite XC has never looked better. I hope CBS exerts more of their influence at this rate. I hope the ratings were good. I want more of that.

  57. mike wolfe on July 27th, 2008 12:26 pm

The announcing was better because Johnson did most of the talking. Mauro chimed in, and his overhyped style was still jarring, but at least it was occasional and not constant.

  58. Bruce on July 27th, 2008 1:16 pm

Are women’s fights always 3 min rounds? Is this the rule in other promotions, too?

  59. HexRei on July 27th, 2008 1:20 pm

@#58 Round length is up to the promoter in the case of either men or women- remember IFL did 4 minute rounds for men’s bouts. So in answer to your question, no, other promotions can and do have different round lengths for women’s bouts. Gina, for example, has fought five minute rounds before earlier in her career.

  60. patrick on July 27th, 2008 2:04 pm

Cung Le vs. Robbie Lawler to unify the belts……nuff said

  61. Rich S. on July 27th, 2008 3:08 pm

“Girl, you will get your ass handed to you on a paper plate when you fight Cyborg.”

you know, i thought that about the Young fight too..
but, Cyborg looked smaller than in her previous fights..
and i actually think Gina could win, by keeping the distance with those straight kicks to the body..

    but… who knows..

anyone else notice that at some point last night Mauro mentioned the UFC, i think during the Diaz fight, and all of a sudden immediately stopped talking and switched the subject in mid-sentence??

i think the only time they’re aloud to say those three letters is when they say “he’s a UFC veteran”.. seeing as how there seems to be this huge ball of hatred between the two companies..

with that said, i thought Shields might get in trouble for wanting to unify the EXC and UFC titles..

    :)

  62. Rich S. on July 27th, 2008 3:10 pm

oh, and right now i’m happy with any of the Lawler fight possibilities:

    Lawler/Ninja 2
    Lawler/Smokin’ Joey 2
    Lawler/Shamrock
    Lawler/Le

they all sound good to me..

  63. 5percentbodyfat on July 27th, 2008 3:18 pm

My friend a casual fan said this too me earlier today, “why in the world would I pay $50 for UFC when I can watch this?” Simply put I had no response, as the announcers made their case last night “styles makes fights, not fighters.” The UFC might have its hands full gaining new fans who appreciate good fights instead of the best p4p fighter beating a guy in a minute or so in what can only be deemed a novelty fight.

    - Production wise, of course this is going to be better than the last production. But I think the key is that CBS has good production to begin with and just built upon it.

    - Frank Shamrock eats Joe Rogan. Maybe its time the UFC should make Kenny Florian permanent in addition to Joe Rogan.

    - Nick Diaz is a good fighter, always has been and could build a following if he stays focused. Good job Robbie like always.

    - CBS needs more stars per card. Or just how the UFC made its premiere flagship the light heavyweight division, and Affliction did so with heavyweights, maybe Elite XC can do the same but market their fighters as straight brawlers, which would be more appropriate for the casual fan.

    - Bigger surprise than actual fights………………..Anderson Silva appearing at the event fully in front of cameras. Why? What benefit is this to the UFC instead of getting mentioned as an afterthought on network tv. What benefit does it have for CBS? It adds CREDIBILITY, to a production thats barely off its feet.

  64. paul on July 27th, 2008 3:45 pm

Man, did Mauro suck bad last night. His usual dose of over-enunciation and stupid one-liners (i.e. “that fight lasted about as long as Brett Favre’s retirement”) makes it hard to watch EliteXC with the sound on. Will someone please tell him that he is not announcing big-time wrestling? Annoying twerp.

  65. Rich S. on July 27th, 2008 6:46 pm

“Frank Shamrock eats Joe Rogan. Maybe its time the UFC should make Kenny Florian permanent in addition to Joe Rogan”

    ARE YOU SERIOUS??

    Rogan’s the good one..

Goldie’s the one they need to replace..

if it was Rogan/Kenflo.. i would be fine..

  66. Jeremy on July 27th, 2008 7:03 pm

#63, Your friend feels that the Elite fighters are equal to the UFC fighters? Interesting thought, but one I certainly don’t agree with. If this was the prevailing thought, the Ultimate Fight Nights would have caused the UFC ppvs to die, and that clearly has not happened.

Regarding Anderson Silva: He was mentioned as the best fighter in the world and UFC “Light Heavyweight Champion.” If anything, it told folks that the UFC had the best fighter in the world.

Obviously you are a big Elite fan, and that is great. But Elite has a long way to go to make it. They still have not made any money. When the Q-10 for the second quarter of 08 (The one with the first CBS show) comes out, it will show they have lost even more money and will have passed the 40 million dollar marker.

They can make it, but last night’s ratings proved they have a lot of work to do. Kimbo and Gina may draw, but a great fight on the first show did not convince the viewers to watch Lawler/Smith II.

On a separate note: Le and Lawler will not be fighting. Strikeforce has a deal with NBC, Elite with CBS. It has been made clear that NBC does not want any fighters appearing on both shows.

Strikeforce and Elite have worked together because of the legal settlement, you will not see their fighters facing each other.

  67. patrick on July 27th, 2008 8:18 pm

Pro Elite OWNS both StrikeForce and Elite XC and the rights to the fighters and past footage, etc. Pro Elite has TV deals with CBS(Elite XC),NBC(Strikeforce) and now FSN(??)not to mention the non-exclusive contracts that most if not all the fighters are signed to. I believe that they have the right to sign whoever they want to a fight. If Cung Le vs. Robbie Lawler makes sense to them then they will get that fight signed.Me, personally, I think it makes perfect sense and would be a good draw. You need to show me a link to the article where it says “it was made clear that NBC did not want any fighters appearing on both shows.” NBC doesn’t even have a deal to show live shows. their deal involves showing nothing but replays at 3 a.m.

i believe that your statement @#66 was incorrect.

    You have failed.

  68. batman on July 28th, 2008 12:47 am

Elite xc and Srtrikeforce already did a show together
