Based upon what? Based upon the fact that Lesnar is a respectful, hard working, and extremely athletic MMA talent…give the guy some respect. I truly enjoy when “MMA fans” make ridiculous comments without any merit. I for one am looking forward to this fight as well. I think Lesnar has a bright future ahead of him. He has a strong camp, he is relatively young, and he has a strong base of wrestling and striking. We shall see come August 9th.

I thought Mir was one of the worst guys he could have made his UFC debut against: a big guy with superb jits. Big Nog would have been the worst guy in the UFC, IMO. Defending subs is not something you can learn over night. He would have had a far, far better chance against Tim Silvia, I think.
The next worst kind of guy would be a great striker who can survive almost any situation you put him in. I wouldn’t say Herring is the best example of that, but he’s up there. He’s been in a wars with some of the best in the game, he’s seasoned as hell but still in his prime and he loves to throw leather. Another huge challenge for the neophyte that Brock still is.
Fortunately for Lesnar he’s got enough raw power and wrestling ability to be a threat to almost anyone (not Fedor). But his inexperience is still a glaring weakness and I think Herring is cagey enough to make him pay for it.
Glad to see that he’s at least learned to eat up his words a little bit. When he was hyping the fight with Mir, you’d think he had just come off a win against Fedor. I too think Lesnar has a chance to win this time around. Herring has been pretty inconsistent lately, and there’s no doubt that Lesnar has power and phenomenal wrestling skills. I don’t know if Brock has the cardio to go the distance with HH, but if he takes the opportunity, he can TKO Herring in the 1st or beginning of the 2nd round. I hope Lesnar is the real deal so he can add some much needed depth to the heavyweight division. You know your heavyweights suck if they get called out by Shayna Baszler.

I admire the fact that he didn’t come into the UFC and take easy fights. That being said, I also hope Herring whoops him to show the world that you can’t be a big bad weightlifting wrestler and think you can actually come in and dominate real MMA fighters.

I think Lesnar has a really good chance to win this, as the “Texas Crazyhorse” seems to be only really really frustrated by an all consuming ground game. I truly think that Lesnar has the ability to have the best GNP out there, but I agree the lingering question is his ability to absorb BJJ skills.
As we have seen, great wrestlers with amazing GNP are not “total” fighters, so they tend to lose via submission. If Lesnar loses, I think it will be via another submission. If he can press his own game scenario, and overpower his opponent in power and endurance…he will win.
The only way Herring can win this is by a Mir-style miracle submission. Lesnar will take this to the ground in the first 15 seconds and keep it there until something makes him stop. I doubt it goes past round 1. Just keep Steve Mazzagatti away from the cage and Lesnar should cruise to victory.
@#16 Mir’s submission wasn’t a miracle. I and a lot of other people knew what Mir was capable of. I called the round, winner, and finish in that fight. It wasn’t a miracle, he was the favorite. IMHO.
For Herring though, a sub like that would be a miracle. He’s not half the BJJ fighter Mir is.
I think you can expect Lesnar to hit that same power double leg that he hit on Mir twice. Heath isn’t enough of a grappler to stop it. If Lesnar is “smart”, he will elevate the take down to a slam, then let him up over and over again. Stay out of harms way, get in some hammerfists but avoid the sub.

98 times out of 100 Lesnar beats Mir. Just because Mir turtled up and snatched an ankle doesn’t mean it wasn’t a miracle. The miracle was that Steve Mazzagatti stood them up and gave Mir time to recover from the absolute drubbing he was receiving.
I agree with aaronb. I’ve watched that fight about a hundred times and if they don’t stand up there is simply no way Mir wins. And don’t say that Lesnar deserved a point deduction either, because we all know that fighters get hit in the back of the head just about every match and barely receive a warning. (Mazzagatti, in particular, seems pretty wishy-washy about noticing stuff like this–I can’t count how many times he’s let a dude take a beating after he was clearly knocked out.)

You hit the nail on the head. Does any else remember how Herring handled O’Brien’s wrestling skills. (If I am wromg please let me know.) I might be going out on a limb here but I believe Brock’s wrestling is just a tad better than O’Brien’s.
Wrestling on its own isn’t enough. Brock doesn’t know what to do once he gets a guy down, except try to clobber him. O’Brien is not the wrestler Brock is, but he is more well rounded. It was one of Herring’s worst fights as well. He should be far more prepared for Lesnar, since it’s a key career fight for him. No one, least of all Heath, wants to go down to a newb like Brock.
All the Herring fights that I’ve seen were less than entertaining. His striking looks akward and sloppy. I believe he caught Kongo on an off day. Lesnar will not make the same mistake twice and I’m sure nerves are not a problem. I hope he pounds him out first round and pulls out his clippers to get rid of Heath’s multicolored hair just like the old WWF.
I suppose I have more faith in Herring than Lesnar, based mostly on the Big Nog fights and the Kongo fight. I know he lost the fights to Nog, but he put him to the test each time and I consider Nog one of the best heavyweights in the world. Probably second right now to Fedor. I like Randy a lot but think Nog would beat him, which is why it’s probably smart for him to avoid that match up, though it was annoying the way he left the UFC.

I’m really curious what kind of chin Lesnar has and what kind of defense he’s got on his feet. The Crazy Horse is going to be launching kicks at him that’s for sure.

but SINCE he became a member of the UFC, his performances have been.. ummm.. not up to par, if you will..
his first fight [in the UFC] = a slow fight in which he didn’t even try to defend takedowns, and he: “didn’t know this was gonna turn into a wrestling match”
second fight: a slow decision win over an opponent [Imes] he greatly outmatched..
third fight: losing, losing, losing, head kick, ohhhhhhh!! , losing, losing, losing, lost..
fourth fight: his fight with Kongo was actually his best in the UFC yet.. but, i wasn’t impressed.. first of all, Kongo seemed off to me.. i mean, in the one place where he should dominate [the feet], he wasn’t working his leg/mid/high kicks, and he wasn’t even defending the takedowns.. and on the ground, Herring wouldn’t punch him in the face.. knees to the body aren’t a bad idea, but you have to punch him in the face every now and then..
THEREFORE,
i think Lesnar’s going to be 2-1 after this fight..
my only worry is Lesnar’s gas tank, and i’m sure he can hold his own in cardio, after a career in which you “entertain/perform” 2 nights a week for 15 min. at a time..
Lesnar will be the attacker on the feet.. he won’t stop moving when it hits the ground [i mean, did you see that spin-around in the Mir fight?? it was beastly!!] and i just think that Herring will break/lose motivation after being outworked in those positions..
You may be right. I just watched the Herring/O’Brien fight and Herring looked awful. It shows how capable he is of underperforming.
However I think in the Lesnar fight you’ll see him more or less at his best. Lesnar does bring a very high energy to a fight and the event itself. Herring won’t be able to coast at all and Brock’s pressure will put him into an automatic pilot zone where his years of experience come to the fore, IMO.
Lesnar is a force to be reckoned with but I think he might have trouble finishing fights against top guys. We’ll have to see if striking becomes one of his tools. This fight should be a great litmus test for that. Herring has looked sloppy in the past with his stand up, but Brock is not someone who should expose that, in fact quite the opposite, he could provide a bigger, easier to hit target.
But I’ve reconsidered thinking Herring was a lock. Still pick him to win, but now I’m thinking Brock has about a 20% chance of just overwhelming him with his wrestling aggression.
Ok, mir looked like he was taking a pounding but put the fists of tank abbott behind those hits and indeed, he would have been taking a pounding. Brocks punches seemed aweful short in that fight. he doesnt need to learn any ground technique, he needs to learn how to make those punches extremely effective and he will be a machine. Ive fought before and out of panic flared up with a bunch of short punches and they just do not have enough effect.
Brocks size and speed will make him an incredible fighter, providing he makes the striking work
I’ve been to a number of Brock’s wrestling matches when he was at the U. I haven’t seen Jake O’brien wrestle, but from what I saw from his fight with Heath, his skills are lacking in comparison to Brock’s.
As far as Brock’s conditioning being questioned, he is in as good as shape as anyone else. (if not better)

Herring won’t be able to coast at all and Brock’s pressure will put him into an automatic pilot zone where his years of experience come to the fore, IMO.
Lesnar is a force to be reckoned with but I think he might have trouble finishing fights against top guys. We’ll have to see if striking becomes one of his tools. This fight should be a great litmus test for that. Herring has looked sloppy in the past with his stand up, but Brock is not someone who should expose that, in fact quite the opposite, he could provide a bigger, easier to hit target.
But I’ve reconsidered thinking Herring was a lock. Still pick him to win, but now I’m thinking Brock has about a 20% chance of just overwhelming him with his wrestling aggression.

Ok, mir looked like he was taking a pounding but put the fists of tank abbott behind those hits and indeed, he would have been taking a pounding. Brocks punches seemed aweful short in that fight. he doesnt need to learn any ground technique, he needs to learn how to make those punches extremely effective and he will be a machine. Ive fought before and out of panic flared up with a bunch of short punches and they just do not have enough effect.
Brocks size and speed will make him an incredible fighter, providing he makes the striking work

I’ve been to a number of Brock’s wrestling matches when he was at the U. I haven’t seen Jake O’brien wrestle, but from what I saw from his fight with Heath, his skills are lacking in comparison to Brock’s.
As far as Brock’s conditioning being questioned, he is in as good as shape as anyone else. (if not better)

Brock dominated his first UFC fight against Mir, let his guard down for a second and his opponent capitalized on it…he won’t make that mistake twice.
Heath is no spring chicken, but Brock knows that. The result will be one insane fight, so can’t wait for it.
