as an ex heroin addict who was on a methadone programme for 2 years, i don’t know what to say about irvin’s behavior. it’s not an easy synthetic opiate to get your hands on unless you’re running in some fucked up circles and it is highly addictive ( a month with-drawl which includes no sleep, no appetite, diarrhea, and chronic pain). being caught by the police with out a prescription also usually results in arrest and jail depending on how much money you can afford for a lawyer. a suspension is getting off lightly when you consider the fact that Nevada is a zero tolerance state. i find it extremely sad that he is at least treading down that path, since it took resuming martial arts for me to get back on track and resume having a normal life.

Although you’re correct about it being used to cope with opiate addiction, fightfan, methadone is also a very good opiate for chronic pain–mainly due to having a longer halflife. It’s also an easy opiate to get your hands on through friends who are in methadone programs.

So, the presence of methadone in Irvin’s system doesn’t necessary imply he’s an addict. Given the fact that the man trained/fought with a broken foot might give some weight to the idea that he was taking it for pain management.

And so I dont sound like I am hating on Irvin…….

Due to the half – life on most pain killers. They can be detected in urinanalysis, usually 3-5 days after taking, and in some case up to a week or so. So, maybe he just was in a lot of pain and “experimented” with them during training and they were still detected in test.

I guess we will have to wait and hear if he even had a prescription for them. Although, it will not clear him. At least it will be better if he AT LEAST had scripts for the drugs

Usually methadone is RARLEY prescribed to treat pain like other pain killers. It is PRIMARILY used to treat those addicted to opiates(heroin, oxycontin, percocet. From experience, if you are taking pain pills, WHETHER RECREATIONAL OR TO ALLEVIATE PAIN……methadone is NOT the pill of choice

Since he had 2 different pain pills in his system, he may be addicted. And if you are feeling the withdrawal from opiate addiction, beleive me you are feeling like you have the worst flu and sickness you have ever had. You are badically bed ridden.

I am only speculating. But if thats the case, then the only way to “feel” normal is to take more opiates or methadone is taken to treat withdrawl symptoms.

I cant wait to hear more on this

James irvin got famous from his two knockouts that only took a matter of seconds to complete. I could see how scared he was when he talked about fighting silva. He had no business in the cage with silva he’s not even ranked in the top 25 of his division enough said.

You could see him limping in his pre fight video when he was entering his training facility. If I had a chance to fight Anderson Silva and possibly shock the world I would do it; even if I had pain killers in my system. It’s too bad that he was busted.

um thanks James enjoy your 6-12 month suspension. He probably should of declined that fight if he was coming off a broken foot.

MMA junkie said the fine could be up to 20,000 $

if only the UFC didn’t schedule a event that day, maybe Irvin could of healed up properly ….. just a thought

I’ve often wondered about these non-approved painkillers. Are they only banned due to an exceptional ability to reduce pain? Or is there another side-effect?
