Ten years down the road people will feel sorry for Dana White/Zuffa for the mistake they made not making Couture happy. Nevermind the fighting ablility, Couture only has a couple of fights left in him, but he is hands down the best and most recognizable spokesman for the sport and is the best fighter/commentator Ive ever heard. Also, the best ambassador for campaigning states for potential MMA sanctioning in my opinion would be Couture. Bottom line is that not keeping Couture happy might be Dana’s one fatal mistake he will be known for years from now.
It is a shame that the UFC is keeping him from fighting. I understand that a contract is a contract……but the UFC does not need to keep him tied up with appeals and lawsuits for years until even “the natural” is too OLD to fight.
Based on the demographic where the sport is most popular (18-34, or whatever), most of the fans will know Couture only through video, if at all. Pro sports are a “right now” business where memories fade quickly. How many current NFL fans still talk about Dan Marino, John Elway, or Joe Montana? They’re focused on what’s happening with their favorite teams and players this season.
