Now this is just hilarious. San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson doing some “old school” training with none other than Kimbo Slice.

Good stuff. This is how you build stars. Whoever is managing Kimbo’s career is doing a nice job. Hopefully elitexc is smart and puts him against a few more cans before testing him (if they can keep the doors open).

Wow, I just cant beleive how much kimbo is being benefitted. I mean there are hundreds and hundreds of other mma fighters that have put far more time and effort and skill into the sport. Magazine covers, headlining bouts, NFL stars training with him, commercials, movies, getting paid like a top mma star, etc, etc…..When will it end???
Good for him taking advantage of the situation. But an illegal back yard fighter with a porn company filming and gambling on his fights made his mark into mma? Unbelievable.
I am in no way predjudiced, but do you think there would this kind of hoopla if Kimbo were a straglly white dude fighting chumps in back yards for a porn company.
He is being treated like a hall a famer. Not fair to others in the sport that made legitimate marks and has put far more time and skill into the sport
But oh well. Some win the lottery. I consider what happened to kimbos lice is the equivalent to the average guy winning millions and millions in the lottery. Fedor, Couture, Liddell adn even Ortiz dont even get the breaks this guy does.

It has nothing to do with skill and putting in your work, but about how marketable the guy is. I agree that there are hundreds of other fighters who are more skilled and more accomplished than Kimbo for sure. But they are nowhere near as marketable and that’s why Kimbo gets the ESPN covers and the commercial time.
Whatever happened to Rampage’s Nike/Addidas/whatever commercial?

I guess my main point was that others did it the hard way…”the right way??” by training hard year after year. While Kimbo did it by street fighting chumps in back yards with a porn company attached to him??? Is that really what you want for young kids as motivation and inspiration????
What should we say to kids…..Hey, dont fight in back yards illegally, ONLY fight/spar and train in the gym. Its okay for Kimbo to make it is this manner but you kids should do it the right way????

Seriously, I couldn’t agree more. You hit it right on the head. I thought the exact same thing before I ever saw Kimbo fight. I thought he was an over-hyped illegal backyard fighter and I didn’t agree at all with how he lived his life. When he made it big on EliteXC (and now on Nike commercials????? Wow….) I was skeptical and didn’t want to even watch it - but I did. I was curious. While I wasn’t all that impressed with his fight (he was completely gassed on the EliteXC fight I saw on CBS - I never saw any of the Showtime fights) I was impressed that he was well spoken and seemed to be polite - NOT that it makes a good fighter or that he deserves anything - but I was impressed with that much. I feel that he certainly has some big shoes to fill and he shouldn’t be so hyped up so fast. He has hardly worked for what he has now (legally, that is) and like you said… I don’t think he’s a good role model for kids who aspire to be MMA fighters in their future. All of that aside, the commercial spot was very entertaining and I love LT… but yea I feel Kimbo’s been given too much of the spotlight for doing nothing more than being a thug involved in a porn ring (and who knows what other illegal things he was involved in.) I would like to see more of the spotlight on fighters who really worked hard to get where they are today - but then again we’re talking about EliteXC here. They’re dying for any type of publicity to get more viewers and become something big that can compete with UFC and/or Affliction.
Yep Jennifer we are on the same page. If he was exactly the same fighter/person, etc, etc but made a name by training hard and putting in the time and did it LEGALLY then I would give him the praise.
But he should not be an image for mma. I think it is outrageous. Sure if he was just an actor or a musician then it would be great, but he should not be the image for mixed martial arts. Nor does he have the skill…..he doesnt have the experience. I am not saying you have to have mad skills to be the face of mma, you should just be a hard worker that dedicated himself to the sport, not dedication to backyards and overweight illegal chump fights

Props to Kimbo. While he may not have worked as hard as other fighters, he hasn’t had his mommy and daddy to haul him to summer wrestling camp in the mini van. He’s from Miami. Not the nice part. I’ve been around there plenty of times, and it’s no place to be able to focus on one thing like wrestling or MMA training. He played football, but Irene messed that up as he couldn’t play his Senior year. He was a bouncer for a porn company, so what. About 20% of the people who watch that commercial will actually know that. It just shows how far he has come. And do you honestly think that many stars in MMA have never done basement brawls or whatnot? MMA has just recently blown up. He’s definitely not the best, but people who grew up in similar situations will respect him infinitely more than someone like Randy Couture, who they can’t relate to.

UFC simply will not let a fighter in their org get this kind of exposure because it makes the fighter bigger than the org
UFC controls the fighters likeness and has to sign off on what commercials or sponsors the fighter can get

Why does everyone HATE on Kimbo? The man NEVER committed a crime in his life and I don’t see how being a bodyguard for a porn company is illegal.Immoral? Yes. Illegal? Everyone acts like Kimbo ruins MMA by just being a part of it. Why do all you people treat MMA like it some exclusive, elite club. MMA is just a collection of guys who are allowed to use any style they please to win a fight against their opponent. So what is so wrong with bringing a street fighting style into MMA? One of the great things about MMA is the diversity. Not everyones style is the same and the point is to see which ones work the best and if the fighter can use his style to overcome the opponent’s style.
