Matt Hamill is a stud. Powerful kid, and one of my favorite fighters. He is goning to have his hands full with Franklin though. If Matt keeps his hands up and fights an aggressive fight I think he can pull out the win.

  2. CacophonyKid on August 22nd, 2008 11:07 am

Umm… what makes him think he was the underdog against Tim Boetsch? I seem to recall the opposite.

  3. Brackett on August 22nd, 2008 11:09 am

I agree. This is why I love Matt Hammill! He is a guy who understands the fight game and thrives under pressure. He doesn’t want to take any short cuts and understands his place in the game. Hammill is definitely a stud! Go Hammill!!!

  4. fightfan on August 22nd, 2008 11:09 am

That kid is an inspiration. He got no attitude and has tons of heart and class. He could of said a lot about the Bisping robbery and his time in the UFC, but he has never complained. Guys like this are what the sport needs as inpirations and role models…..not gambling circus sideshow illegal backyard fighters.

Do you want your kids looking up to someone who made it like Slice did or how hammill is doing it???? No brainer

  5. Smokes on August 22nd, 2008 11:44 am

Hamill is a great guy and I like him being in the UFC but the guy is going to get hurt. I haven’t seen his last fight but he normally has his hands at his side or near his stomach… Rich wouldn’t hesitate to strike and the longer this fight goes the more chance Hamill gets lazy and lets those hands drop. I’m just seeing it as very critical that Hamill ends the fight quick if he wants the win but balls to the wall against Franklin and you could be face down on the floor instead.

  6. fightfan on August 22nd, 2008 11:59 am

    Yeah smokes, I agree 100%….

I have noticed that hammill seems not to even care where his hands are or if he gets hit…..Boetsch kneed him a few times and split his lip in half.

I know hammil is tough, but he got to be more careful. He cant take repeated strikes like that, altough he seems to think he can. Got to watch out that Franklin doesnt get his A Silva revenge on Hammil. You know Franklin can strike, and if Hammil is careless he will eat a lot of strikes. And you know Franklin has been waiting to payback someone(anyone) for all the shit that Anderson did to him.

    Go hammill!!!!

Franklin goes from A. Silva to Lutter to Matt Hammil (no offense to Matt Hammil) if his level of comp. keeps sliding down he’ll be fighting people who shouldn’t even be in the UFC, Tank Abbott is just around the corner.

  8. collin bryer on August 22nd, 2008 2:00 pm

franklin will decimate hamill ill send flowers to hamills family

  9. Mike on August 22nd, 2008 3:49 pm

hes going up to 205 what do you expect truth… A silva fought a plug at 205 and hes the 185 champ

  10. catch on August 22nd, 2008 4:41 pm

That’s a good point Mike, I’d say Hamill may actually be a tougher test than James Irvin.

  11. Mike on August 22nd, 2008 4:58 pm

    I agree catch

  12. Mike Wolfe on August 22nd, 2008 5:32 pm

Hammil is an inspirational guy, but his striking needs a lot of improvement. He will take a beating from Franklin, imo.

  13. Patrick on August 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm

Again I’m going to have to voice my disagreement with people calling James Irvin a “plug”… he get caught, it happens, Chuck got taken out fast as hell by Rampage and nobody is calling him a plug are they?

If they had put A Silva up against like Houston or Boetsch or some new guy, yeah, that’s a plug, Irvin was fringe top ten if not in the top ten LHW in the UFC.

  14. ryan on August 22nd, 2008 5:38 pm

you guys are right but it is the ufc that is putting him in there against boobs because they don’t want him to lose. but i think hammil can test him but if rich is a top ranked guy have him fight top guys. and i like rich but you know he would get hurt fighting wandi or rampage!!
i know he moved to 205 but he should be fighting hedo at an agreed catch weight if hendo wants to saty at 85

  15. Bad Monkey on August 22nd, 2008 5:42 pm

Rich vs. Hendo would be a great fight, whether at 205 or 185. It’ll be interesting to see how Franklin does in this one. He’s used to being a big 185′er and now he’s moving up to fight much larger guys. If the fight goes into the third round it’ll be interesting to see how his gas tank is while carrying the extra weight. Hamill cuts to get to 205, so he’s used to it. Should be a good fight either way.

  16. warcry on August 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm

I like Rich Franklin all the way in this. Matt has that tendency to want to strike. That is bad news in this fight. His ground and pound is not that intimidating so even if he gets Rich down he will not do much damage. I can’t stand Rich because I think he is an @sshole but, this will be an easy victory.

  17. Mike on August 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm

Franklin fought at 205 before UFC as well as against Shamrock so hes not a newcomer to it

  18. Mike on August 22nd, 2008 5:55 pm

Warcry why do you think Rich is as asshole? He seems pretty down to earth and nice to me. Telling the cincinatti fans not to boo A. Silva, visiting the troops in iraq ect..?

  19. Suparaf on August 22nd, 2008 6:59 pm

I think I have a man crush. How can you not like Matt Hammil. He’s really inspiring and tough yet adorable and looks like he could take care of your kids. Franklin on the other hand really needs a victory and he’s a great guy too.

It’s one of those fights where I don’t really want to see any of them get beat down.

  20. traingleman on August 22nd, 2008 7:45 pm

Size is not the issue here! Franklin is a huge 185er!!!! He walks around at 210! Now he can be stronger and not dehydrated and work more on technique then worrying about weight! Franklins sprawl is legendary, his power is great, and hamils biggest enemy will be his courage and heart. He hasn’t faced anyone near franklins striking and I think he loses in a late bloody and ugly stoppage because he doesn’t know when enough is enough!

  21. Rich S. on August 22nd, 2008 11:18 pm

back on TUF, i hated Hamill..
idk, the whole “cocky” thing just pissed me off..
but, now, i think he’s great..
he showed VAAAAAAAST improvement in the stand-up game in his fight with Bisping.. he REALLY IS a fast learner..
and i won’t lie, i thought Boetsch would put him in the hospital but NOPE.. Hamill came through..

i wouldn’t be suprised to see Hamill take a frustrated “Ace” to a decision victory.. but, i can’t help but think at some point Hamill will tire out and Rich will go in for the kill.. it’s ALWAYS hard to pick the guy standing opposite to Rich Franklin..

  22. Damo on August 23rd, 2008 4:17 am

I can’t help but see Matt getting the loss this time around.. probably not due to the fighter that he is, but moreso the fight and passion that Rich is likely to bring.

Matt has one of the best attitudes in the game. I get alot of inspiration from seeing a guy like that battling up hill all of his life, and running around (with success) in one of the biggest dances in the world.

    Good on him.

  23. warcry on August 23rd, 2008 10:45 pm

It stems from Rich actually saying he got the better of the standup with Anderson Silva in their first fight where he was destroyed. Then on TUF when he was guest coaching some of the Middleweights he was showing them a good way too get knocked the hell out.
