K.J. Noons releases explosive statement regarding EliteXC

K.J. Noons sent out a mass email yesterday to a lot of the major MMA websites to tell his side of the story regarding the canceled Nick Diaz fight on CBS on October 4. According to Noons his decision to not fight Nick Diaz has nothing to do with Diaz himself and everything to do with the way EliteXC has treated him. He is not a happy camper and it’s pretty easy to see why he feels the way he does. Here’s some of the highlights:

On his promotion (or lack thereof) by EliteXC:

In the Elite XC’s DVD where Diaz and I fought there are two (2) baseball cards of Diaz and Kimbo. Hello! I won the fight and Elite XC’s promoting Diaz after I beat him? Or how about the day Elite XC flew Diaz in to do a signing on the DVD where he lost. Wow, that must have been uncomfortable Nick? Signing a DVD, and it is a fight that you lost. Why wasn’t I flown in for the signing?

On EliteXC giving him a hard time about tickets to shows:

Elite XC gives me a hard time about comping me one extra ticket for my cousin that helped me train for my fight. I only get four tickets per show. I am the main event in Honolulu, my home town! I did not ask for any tickets for my family and friends and they gave me a hard time about one extra ticket!

On threats from EliteXC President Chuck Champion:

Chuck Champion (President Elite XC) threatens me, my family and my manager with lawsuits and how he’s going to sue me. HAHA. Pretty hard to sue a guy who does not make jack with your company. I’m glad $kala disclosed how much I make, which breached the confidentiality clause of the contract. I will break down the real numbers for you. I am the defending world champ, I have been the main event for Elite XC three out of four times on Showtime. In almost two years I have made approximately $83,000?

On being “bent over by EliteXC with no Vaseline”:

But the straw that broke the camel’s back is they want me to fight Diaz for the second time. Diaz is not the number one contender and they are paying Diaz three times more money than me. Diaz complained after the Stockton fight, he was not paid enough. How do you think that made me feel? Yes you can argue that Diaz gets more for the draw, therefore I do not deserve as much compensation. If that is the case, it is a result of Elite XC terrible job promoting me. Instead of promoting me as their champ and upcoming athlete, Elite XC has resented me for ruining their plans to make Diaz their champ. That is just total disrespect. So it comes down to money and what is fair. I am tired of being bent over by Elite XC with no Vaseline.

You can read the whole thing here. It’s a great read and it’s hard to disagree with Noons when he brings some of these things to light.

    Dear Karl,
    That is your name right?
Stop your complaining and fight. EliteXC calls Diaz first because he is a gamer and lives for MMA. Karl you are just a little girlie-man and know you are going to get punked out if you fight Diaz.
If I were you I would just STFU and fight. If you are trying to get release to fight somewhere else… Your never going to get another belt so you should try to defend yours. Oh yeah thats right you beat Yves Edwards (the ken shamrock of your division)

well he is right that eddie alverez is the number one contender.
alverez needs to be shown to the american fans. eddie has had a great year with two of the best fights of the year already.
for all you ufc only fans look up the alverez/hanson fight and the alverez/kawajiri fight well just watch the whole lightweight tourny from DREAM it was great

Seeing the extent to which EliteXC has been doing their best to pre-determine the outcomes of high profile fights by giving their chosen “stars” preferential treatment ($kala shouting at the ref to “stand them up” during the Kimbo/Thompson fight, keeping Cris Cyborg and Tara La Rosa far, far away from Gina, creating a whole new weight class for Nick Diaz), I can understand Noons’s frustration. EliteXC brought him in, at 1-1, to lose to Diaz and yet he beat him on cuts and now KJ’s saying the promotion cares more about getting value out of their expensive talent than building new stars. EliteXC can spend their money how they see fit, but he’s right. He should just take the Diaz fight in October (the last on his contract, I believe) and use a possible win there as negotiating leverage. If he loses, who cares? He wanted out of EliteXC anyway.

On one point KJ is absolutely correct, though: Right now, Nick Diaz would be a FAR easier fight than Eddie Alvarez. Simply put, Alvarez is a beast, the brightest star on EliteXC’s roster, and easily a top 3-5 lightweight in the world. I happen to think KJ would lose to Alvarez, but I don’t think he’s shying away from tough fights if that’s whom he really wants.

This guy doesn’t get it. He’s fought four fights in Elite XC. Nobody had really heard of him before the Diaz fight, and it wasn’t until the Edwards fight that he got a victory where people started to respect him as a possible top ten fighter. Diaz has a lengthy reel of classic, memorable fights, and genuine, crowd-pleasing wins against top opponents. Noons can’t just suddenly expect to be treated like a superstar because he beat one well-known fighter on a doctor’s stoppage. If he beats Diaz again, and beats him definitively (and you know it’ll be a great fight either way with Diaz involved), he’ll see Elite XC promote him like a star. He’ll see them build up to an Eddie Alvarez fight, etc.

Plus, Noons has no leverage here. He may be the champ of Elite XC, but he’s not yet regarded as one of those ‘other org’ fighters like Fedor, Lindland, Gomi, and Shields who everybody believes could hang with and maybe defeat the UFC champs. If he signed with UFC tomorrow, he would just start at the bottom of the lightweight or welterweight cue, fighting the Clay Guidas and Manny Gamburyans of the world. If he wants to be the kind of big shot who can pick his fights and talk shit about his promotion, then he needs to beat Diaz in a definitive way, knock out a couple more Edwards-level fighters, and then beat or at least have a war with Alvarez. If he does that, then he’s an immediate top contender in any org he wants to sign with.

Between this drama and the after fight debacle a month or so ago, this is almost sounding like a work. Combined with the Slice/Rogers hoopla, it’s looking like they’re frantically struggling to drum up interest as they circle the bowl.

My question is who determines number one contender? The only answer I know for a fact its not the fighters.

Hey KJ suck it up fuktard and fight who they put in front of you. As has been said what more can they do but put you on national TV against a NAME guy. Beat Nick Diaz and people will notice you.

You have some shitty management giving you advise buddy.

Why can’t I post a comment as fast as I want as long as it’s only one per topic? Anyway, Kj Noons you dropped the ball on this one. You had the opportunity of a life time and you blew it. There are many fighters who would love to get that kind of exposure on national TV. You need to choose your battles a little better next time. This is not a battle worth winning, you just look like a chump with no brains.

I agree with finkrod on this one!
This is staring to look like a “staged” drama to drum up interest in a PPV with Kimbo fighting Rogers and Gina fighting Mrs. Cyborg. EXC must think we’re as stupid as wrestling fans.

Thanks for the credit, Mr Shaw!

the key to running a successful company is about giving your employees respect imo. unless you have lots and lots of money, eventually your employees will leave.

i will always take the side of fighters first unless there is contradicting evidence, i believe kj noons is not being properly treated as a champ.

diaz is one of my favourite fighters

Wow, they are doing Noons pretty dirty. Id like to see them fight just so Noons can beat Diaz’s face into red jello again. That bit about the DVD was hilarious, knowing Diaz he just kept saying “Stockton Mother*ucker” over…and over…and over again.

i can’t believe he’s bitching about 83 grand over two years when he is the champ of a made-up division in a crappy promotion.

    Let’s break it down KJ:

You actually have only been signed to EXC for about 18 months. So really about a year and a half. Looking at it that way, you make about 60 grand a year with EXC, and that’s not counting sponsorships. I’m betting you haven’t paid for gear, training, or a meal in hawaii since your first EXC show.

You’ve fought four times in that period, and managed to lose your first fight in EXC- not a great way to start off if you want to be making big bucks in 18 months. So from that perspective, you made a little over 20 grand per bout- once again, not really all that bad.

And let’s not forget that up until he beat Yves, Diaz was KJ’s ONLY quality win. How much do you really pay a “champ” who’s biggest win at the time was over Edson “who the fuck am I again” Berto? Meanwhile Diaz has wins over some of the best fighters in the world, and gave a lot of others long, hardfought wars. Diaz is paid more because he is worth more, KJ.

I personally think that if Noons is so confidant, than he should go kick the crap out of Diaz again, then call out Alverez in the cage after the fight. At least that way we get to see a fight.
