UFC 88 Video: Dana White’s UFC 88 Video Blog Part 2 feat. Randy Couture

September 3, 2008 by Adam Morgan

Here is the second part of Dana White’s UFC 88 video blog featuring the conference call with Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar. This video also features the now famous Brock Lesnar line “Who gives a s– about Fedor?” Oh, and apparently Couture and Dana White are buddy-buddy now. Look at that smile on Randy’s face. Money talks, right?

“Brock might be my son” haha i love it. Lesnar maks a good point though, the media shouldnt try and drum up a fight that isn’t and may never happen. Great that they burried the hatchet though, happy to see Randy back. Does anyone know if he’ll do any color work on the broadcasts??

In these “candid” video moments, Dana reminds me a lot of Vince MacMahon’s behind the scenes “shoots”.

  3. dbess5 on September 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm

seriously? Who cares about Brock Lesnar? That’s the question. I don’t like the guy at all, and I don’t think he’s put in the time to face Randy yet.

I know this is all about money, but its just not right to all the other fighters who have been busting their asses to get the chance to fight for the title. and then Brock shows up with his high jinx shananigans and he gets a title shot after winning a fight against heath herring who isn’t able to get on a 3 fight winning streak to save his life.

I just feel it’s disrespectful to the other fighers, But I understand it’s really great business.

dbess5, you cant have it both ways. People would be mad if they let Brock fight a guy who he will definitely beat as well. If Randy is better than Brock, he will win. If Brock is better, then I’m glad he got a title shot.

the breakup was the best thing for the UFC ever…they are all over ESPN and other mainstream media. Hell, the Daily Kos used a Chuck Liddell metaphor in their coverage of the RNC yesterday.

  6. matt on September 3rd, 2008 1:11 pm

jon, exactly. dbess5, you cant hate on brock just because he was in wwe. what are high jinx shananigans? being the most athletic heavyweight in the ufc? being a college wrestling champion? the bottom line is, if lesnar was never in wwe, came out of nowhere and almost beat frank mir and beat herring, would you still call his game high jinx? probably not. youd probably be a fan.

This fight is very promotable. Promotable fights always ask an interesting question. Good fights have an interesting answer. I fear not.

Matt think about it like this.

You’ve been working for a company for 3-4 years. You are expecting this really big raise to come up because you’ve been doing a really great job of taking care of business at work.

THEN all of a sudden some guy comes into the company you work for and instead of you getting this big raise that you worked hard for. This guy comes in and gets paid more money than you do, he doesn’t do nearly as much work as you, and then you don’t get that big raise you expected because they dumped all this extra money into this new guy.

That’s why I am a little bit upset about the situation. I understand that’s how the world works, but I was raised that you have to work hard to get to the top of the pyramid. You can’t just expect your reputation to carry you to the top.

Again, I understand this is good business for the UFC and I don’t take that away from them at all. They need to make and put money back into the economy at times like these. But don’t just put your other fighters on the shelf who have been busting their asses to make it to the top.

You guys should think about temp banning people with horrible grammar like Loco541, after a few bans they might start making sense.

  12. Jon on September 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm

Just don’t take your anger out on Brock. He didn’t ask for this fight. The UFC called him and asked if he wanted to take it. I give him props for fighting top competition so early.

  13. Suresh0t on September 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm

Brock did nothing wrong, obviously he would be dumb to turn down this fight. It’s a win win for him. If he wins, he is the new UFC champ, if he loses, he is still new to the game and sure he will be called a hack and such by people who have never stepped into a cage to fight etc, but he’ll still be given time to grow. The UFC won’t cut him for losing one of the biggest, if not the biggest PPV they have done. So people who blame Brock for things that have nothing to do with him, other than him accepting a fight, are beyond dumb.

Now onto the fact that the UFC is completely screwing over 1 fighter and 1 fighter only. That fighter is obviously Big Nog. Seeing as he is the true number 1 contender, and holds the interim title to prove it. This doesn’t affect Mir at all, except for the fact that he has to watch someone he beat get a title shot before him. It’s a little disrespectful to him, but whatever, he isn’t going to beat Big Nog anyhow (lacks the stand up, and is nullified on the ground if not beaten on the ground). However Big Nog is now stuck doing the Ultimate Fighter, and having to watch as someone takes his #1 contender shot. Even so, the Ultimate Fighter will be good for Nog to get his name out to the general UFC fanbase. Obviously we all love him in the medium to hardcore fan groups because what is there not to love?

Like I said, I think Big Nog has nothing to worry about unless Mir gets a standup game out of nowhere. Big Nog isn’t going to get submitted, and Mir doesn’t have the takedown capabilities to control the fight. Nog will box him, and if he wants he will take it to the ground and control Mir.

I am going to say it now, I think Brock is the favorite to win this fight. As good as Randy is for planning and following a game plan, I just think he will be overpowered by Brock. I’m not saying Randy can’t pull off another win, and I really hope he does (so the Fedor/Couture dream will go on), I’m just saying that Brock is by no means a walk.

Fedor will ride out Affliction as long as it holds, but if it should die, I think he will have to make a choice between getting out of the game or coming to the UFC. There will be no suitors left for Fedor if Affliction dies. EliteXC won’t have the funds to invest in him and may not even be around, Dream is in the same boat. Unless Fedor wants to fight for way less money but more freedom, he will have no choice other than the UFC if he wants to continue. I actually think that Fedor will opt to get out of the game, as he has stated that it is just a job to him, he doesn’t have a particular interest in the fight game. He doesn’t watch fights that don’t effect him and so on.

    Final Thought:

Here’s hoping to Fedor wanting to prove he is the best and signing with the UFC. I’m not saying that is where he needs to prove he is the best, as I see it the Barnett / Arlovski are plenty of meat to chew on if he wants to prove he is still #1, however to the casual fan/only UFC fans, he will need to beat someone relevant in the UFC to win them over.

  14. razzle on September 3rd, 2008 4:10 pm

I agree with Dana. Let Fedor make his way to the UFC if he wants to keep his crown.

  15. gabe on September 3rd, 2008 4:52 pm

very smart move by dana.ufc.and randy. They hold all the power now, if Fedor really wants to cement his legacy he has no choice than to come to the UFC early 2009 and prove he is as bad as we all kow he is. The real question is why he is so unwilling to come to the UFC when we all see him as an overwhelming favorite no matter who he fights?

  16. Bonz on September 3rd, 2008 6:18 pm

Maybe they should have done Mir v Couture and Lesnar v Nogueria.
Either way, if Lesnar wins he gets a piece of the title and then gets a shot at the “unified” title. There arent any other legitimate contenders in the UFC. Werdum? Congo? Gonzaga again? Nope.

  17. nate on September 3rd, 2008 6:36 pm

I want to see Fedor fight Randy.

I dont care about the UFC vs the world politics, that is their business problem, not a fan problem. As a fan I want to see that fight.

I am excited that Randy will be fighting though. As smart a fighter Randy is, I think Lesnar is going to kill him.
