Seth Petruzelli beats Kimbo Slice via TKO, Gina Carano victorious
In what ended up being a strange night at the EliteXC “Heat” card, former UFC fighter and TUF 2 veteran Seth Petruzelli stepped in to fight Kimbo Slice in the main event after Ken Shamrock pulled out due to a cut sustained over his left eye in training. Kimbo’s camp allegedly didn’t make a decision on whether or not take the fight with Petruzelli until about 6:20 ET according to the broadcast.
Petruzelli was supposed to fight Aaron Rosa during the preliminary bouts but the bout was scratched in favor of Petruzelli competing in the main event against Slice.
Petruzelli shocked the world, however, by beating Slice within seconds of the opening bell. He stunned Kimbo with a short right jab that put Kimbo on all fours and never looked back, raining down punches from Kimbo’s back and eventually forcing a stoppage by the referee.
Slice was so out of it from the barrage of punches that after the fight had been stopped by the referee and Petruzelli was celebrating, Kimbo was trying to secure a double leg takedown on the referee, thinking that it was Petruzelli that he was trying to take down.
Petruzelli said afterward that he respected Kimbo for taking the fight on short notice and Kimbo did the same.
In other action on the card, Gina Carano defeated a very game Kelly Kobold via unanimous decision. Carano used her height and reach advantage to pepper Kobold with shots from the outside. Whenever Kobold closed the distance on her Carano was able to stay on her feet and avoid all of Kobold’s takedown attempts with the exception of one.
Kobold showed a lot of heart, fighting through a huge cut above her left eye and taking Carano’s best punches and kicks on the way to losing a unanimous decision. Carano said after the fight that Kobold was her toughest test to date. It looks as if Carano is headed for a collision with Cris Cyborg, who defeated Yoko Takahashi via unanimous decision earlier in the evening.
Jake Shields also defended his title in the lead up bout to the main event, submitting Paul Daley via armbar at the end of the second round. Shields looked to be outdone on the feet but was dominant whenever the fight hit the ground, mounting Daley with ease and poured on huge elbows and punches from the top position. Daley was able to fend off a lot of Shields’ takedowns throughout the fight but Shields was relentless and controlled the action to make sure the fight ended up where he wanted it. Daley had no answer for Shields’ mount and eventually succumbed to a textbook armbar.
Shields indicated after the fight that he would like to step up to 185 lbs. to take on Robbie Lawler.
The two fighters on loan from Affliction, Andrei Arlovski and Roy Nelson, had an entertaining heavyweight battle in the third fight of the main card. The first round was mostly all Nelson as he was able to take Arlovski down, control him and work for submissions. When the fight hit the feet, however, it was Arlovski that took control. He dominated the second right by fending off Nelson’s takedown attempts and destroying him from the outside with good combinations and great power. He eventually was able to finish Nelson and put him down for the count at the end of round two.
In the first fight of the televised portion of the card, Benji Radach defeated Murilo Rua via TKO in the second round in what turned out to be a great slugfest. Rua took some huge shots from Radach at the beginning of the fight and was able to weather the storm and come back strong, landing some big shots of his own. Radach eventually capitalized on a missed knee from Rua and rained down bombs from top position to knock Rua out and end the fight.
Below are the full results from the card:

I was glad to see Kimbo exposed. really bad judgement on EliteXC ‘s part Seth is to young + experienced, he trained for Bob Sapp in the past who presents all the problems that Kimbo does., just worse because of his gigantic size. Props to Seth, maybe the UFC will take him back now. Since without partnering up with Affliction is probably going to disapear sooner rather than later.

Great job Seth, the MMA community thanks you I’m sure.
I was so, so, so exceedingly happy to watch Seth win (despite his wiki page actually saying he lost the fight in the 2nd round via verbal submission? haha). So very happy, also… it really looks like Ninja is finished (he really didn’t put up much of a fight at all). Shields did a great job of controlling the thumb on that armbar to prevent the roll out and ended up finishing it textbook style, great job for one of EXC’s only good fighters.
All in all, I was pleased, free mma, some ok stuff, Kimbo losing, Shields winning.
Yarr!

why so much hatred for kimbo? i just don’t get it, i mean everyone has a right to like whoever they want, but hating a guy for where he came from and what he did in his past is stupid. Its not like kimbo was out raping babies, robbing liquor stores, and beating up old women…..i was shocked at how the match ended so quickly, but i guess that’s one of the draws to watching an MMA event, kind of like last month when Chuck was brutally knocked out

who hates kimbo? i just hate the way the media pandered to him despite his lack of achievement and EXC fed him chump opponents while calling him the next big thing. Kimbo seems like a nice guy and I want him to succeed, but not at the expense of the integrity of the sport.
If someone wants to walk into the sport as a superstar they need to at the very least go the Lesnar route and face legitimate opponents. Anyone with a working knowledge of MMA could tell Kimbo had giant holes in his game and that most of his image was hype. It was just a matter of EXC letting him fight someone who could expose it.

EliteXC’s Hype Of Kimbo Slice = Epic Fail
Kimbo himself has nothing to do with the way he’s been hyped or the way EliteXC has presented him. He is what he is. He was humble in defeat, he took a much more dangerous fight on short notice, and he lost with dignity. There’s no reason not to like Kimbo Slice and there’s no reason to revel in his defeat because he didn’t create the hype.
If there’s anyone to laugh at it’s EliteXC because they have built their promotion on his back and now he’s proven that he is what he is, a 3-1 fighter who’s still learning the game. Shame on EliteXC for building a house of cards.

Most of the fights were decent but the announcing took a big step backwards and the show was a real mess. Seems fitting that the Kimbo express got it’s ticket punched by a TUF alum who washed out of the UFC(a light heavyweight even). Perhaps EliteXC can headline Seth Petruzelli vs Ken Shamrock next? There is a reason the company constantly looks to be on the verge of going out of business, they just aren’t very good at this.

I don’t think most people *hate* Kimbo. These people just very plainly realize that the hype always greatly exceeded the man.
Kibmo was supposed to be a big football prospect, until some “altercation” with Warren Sapp meant the end of Kimbo’s football career, while Sapp went on to a be a collegiate star and Super Bowl champion in the NFL.
Then Kimbo became the street fighting legend. Until some Boston cop/boxing scrub decided he’d take on big bad Kimbo and they ended up duking it out until Kimbo was passed out on the floor, and very much lucky that his posse was there to keep things in check.
Nevermind though. The internet allowed Kimbo’s legend grow, to the point that some suits figured he’d earn them a bunch of $$ in MMA. And, for a very short time, they were correct. He fought a couple shmucks, before taking care of an actual well-known, albeit over-the-hill, MMA fighter in Tank Abbott. Then he eked out a victory over a relative scrub in James Thompson. Great success.
So bring on another washed up big name in Ken Shamrock. Plenty of us were excited – several years ago – to see Ken take on another meteoric rise-and-fall type fighter in Tito Ortiz. But Tito worked him over and Ken never looked the same. But that didn’t stop him from collecting another decent payday with the Kimbo fight. And hell, I’m sure Ken did think he stood a good chance of beating Kibmo, and tonight’s result probably has him only wishing he could’ve been the guy to burst the Kimbo bubble.
But, oh well, it is what it is. Kimbo is a big puncher who’s been exposed to be a scrub in the big picture of mixed martial arts. Many of us had a serious suspicion of this all along, and tonight just confirmed it. If that makes us *haters*…well, so be it. Now we’ve at least got some pretty solid proof.

adam i like ur take on things…..i guess im just a little upset, cause I do like Kimbo, to me he has that it factor outside of the ring, that not alot of MMA fighters have. Yes he has had tons of media exposure and has fought a bunch of stiffs, i agree on those points, but i enjoy watching the guy fight, even if they are bums and he is still a baby when it comes to the MMA game—–I feel the same way about Lesnar, lots of people on here hating him cause he was a WWE wrestler and he is undeserving of where he is…………….on a side note to everything I was watching the original TUF finale from and wonder what happened to Bonner? i remember he popped for some juice, but is he still suspended? or is he not good enough to be on paid tv?

It’s irrelevant where the hype is coming from when the point is that it just isn’t deserved. It’s not like Kimbo has been going around downplaying any of it, he’s the guy doing the interviews and all the talking. He’s a green guy with a lot of holes in his game who is headlining cards and propping up a whole company, it wasn’t a good idea from any vantage point and it’s come back to bite him and EliteXC in the ass. Heck it’s not like he could of turned down this fight after going on and on about fighting anyone anytime in so many interviews, he set himself up for a big fall just as much as EliteXC did.

Mentioning Kimbo in the same breath as Brock Lesnar is a major, major insult to Lesnar. Yes, the WWF/WWE is a complete joke, but people need to look beyond that to realize that Brock was a beast of a talent/athlete/wrestler before that, and he still is now. Taking a couple years off to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in the joke that is the WWE doesn’t change that. Lumpting Brock and Kimbo together makes no sense whatsoever…

Gina Carano is the best fighter the Elite XC has. If she fights Cyborg she is going to expose her for what she really is. A lower class fighter trying to be Carano. If Carano actually just focused on MMA only she would be indistructable. On top of all that she is the first american female to win in Tai Land. Kimbo what happened? I guess he is through now. Lucky for him Ken got hurt? Go Gina Carano. Oh ya, Shields is not that got. He lost the fight to Yushin Okami. The judges were watching another fight or need somebody to teach tell the actual rules. F.Y.I, Gina Carano was trained by Master Toddie.

did’nt read these post – but please allow me to speak my peace if I may – - in the grand scheme of things there was NO reason for Kimbo to really take this fight – I mean a 3-0 fighter taking ashort notice fight against someone who has experience in evry forum in multiple weight classes – - he’s better equipped at short notice fights then Kimbo – he (Kimbo) said Yes to not disappoint the crowd because Ken wanted to get crazy today (obviously the cut happen like this morning/last night – whatever. The hype that Kimbo is getting is not of his pwn making – if someone came up to me and said “Hey – wanna do a commercial with LT” F— YEAH, or ” Hey I’m Mask – we wanna make a brand of clothing with the TAPOUT name on it” – -WHERE DO I SIGN? Please no one compare him to Brock – -Brock has credentials (Jr College national champ, undefeated D1 NCAA champ) I think it’s obvious that Kimbo needs some schooling – maybe it’sthe best thing to happen to him – I’m sure that is what BAS is telling him – –oh another point – if Kimbo had 0 potential -why would BAS stick his neck out for him – I understanf NOOB’s may not really know who BAS really is – but hardcores’ can you understand me at least? EliteXC does not die tonight – - they have way too many great fights to promote (hardcores’ how are you not happy about Diaz/Alvarez?) once again – -one mans’ opinion……

well……if i were elitexc, i would become a women’s MMA organization. LOL that carano fight should have been the main event. in both the cbs fight nights where carano was featured, it was the best fight. and too bad they didn’t show the cyborg fight, cuz the highlights looked awesome.
and am i the only one who thinks jake shields is way overrated? he’d get killed in the ufc. i won’t even mention kimbo….that topic is on overdrive on every board. once elitexc goes under (which may be very soon), even if the ufc signs him (which i doubt), dana white would probably put him on the untelevised undercard and pay him about $1,500.

Dave Woodruff you are wrong about Brock Lesner. He is for real. Did you see the Heath Herring fight. He distroyed him and Herring almost beat the champ Noguiera. Brock would have beatin’ Mir if he didn’t make that one mistake. He was dominating the fight up until that point. He is going to beat Couture when they fight. I guarantee that Brock Lesner will be champ sooner then later and when that happens thats trouble for everybody else in that weight class. Just everyone watch and see.

Yeah, and his talking was actually pretty damn humble. Have you actually bothered to read the interviews? Sure, he has stood up for himself when people ATTACKED him (all fighters need to be confident and believe in themselves) but hi proponents did most of the big talk. I’m not sure what interviews you saw- not the same ones as me I guess.
I’m hardly a Kimbo fan but sorry, I think you’re wrong here. EXC and the media is to blame for the hype. Kimbo knew exactly how green he was to MMA and freely admitted it.

Yes I saw the Frank Shamrock wanting to fight him bit too.
As far as his interviews go, the guy has done a lot of interviews. I have seen several, some were humble but most were him talking up the “I’ll fight anyone anytime bit” and hyping it up. Kimbo gets paid a hell of a lot of money out there, a lot more than any other 3 or 4 fight rookie (not named Brock Lesnar) is making. He was a big part of the hype machine surrounding him and he sure wasn’t saying no to the overblown hype or the money that was coming in from it. Lets not act like poor Kimbo was a victim of EliteXC here he was just as much a part of it as they were.

Some people said “you have the potential to be great, join our org, we will pay you more than you have ever made and feed you gradually tougher opponents to build you into what we feel you can become.” who wouldn’t take that deal?
My point is that he was humble in the interviews I read. There is a fine line between arrogance and self confidence and think he stayed well on the proper side. I specifically remember him in an interview saying he was just starting out in MMA and he knew it. At the same time he had a warrior spirit and I think Shaw and his camp had a lot more to do with his opponent selection than he did. I am not a big fan and I don’t feel like I am romanticizing him when I say he probably would have fought the toughest guys to challenge him even if everyone knew he didn’t have the skills to win that fight yet.

as soon as Petruzelli was announced as Ken’s replacement i KNEW Kimbo was going to get Knocked out..
i’m not one of those kimbo haters.. but mark my words.. as soon as i heard seth’s name i said kimbo’s gonna lose..
seth’s a smart fighter..
utilizes leg kicks, head kicks, etc..
i knew that he would do something drastic..
and believe it or not, i actually predicted an 0:11 second knockout as they were coming to the ring.. i was only off by a few seconds..
i didn’t want to see kimbo dethroned like that..
that’s not him getting exposed..
the only way he would’ve been “exposed” is a loss via submission.. because everyone rags on his ground game..
he’s a legit striker, not a brawler.. and he just got caught by one of the weirdest punches i’ve ever seen.. i mean, it was thrown from like 10 centimeters, and still had the power to rock him? crazy..
gratz to petruzelli.. and dude, please change your annoying ass hair..

Being from Miami, I’ve always been a Kimbo fan. Unfortunately the second I heard Seth’s name announced, I knew he had no chance. Training for a fight with Ken Shamrock, there was no way he would be prepared to handle the kicks that Seth would inevitably throw…
I was quite surprised that Bas didn’t somehow stop Kimbo from taking this fight on short notice. On one side you have an experienced fighter that has likely seen ALL of Kimbo’s fights, against a fighter with a little over a years worth of experience who has NO previous knowledge of his more experienced opponent. This had loss written all over it…
On another note, Kimbo clearly underestimated the goofy, pink haired, pink mouthpieced Seth. He bypassed throwing the jab and rushed in for the kill. He loaded up his right, tried to block the kick with his left, and leaned into a stiff, blinding jab. This was a mistake which I hope Kimbo learns from. The kick clearly threw him off, which he likely didn’t train for.
Good luck Kimbo. Keep on improving–hope to see him fighting again soon.

I feel by the way kimbo looked last night he knew the game was up for him. Kimbo took it like a man and now hopefully if he wants to carry on fighting he will now be able to start fresh and learn more and build himself up the ladder with elite or without them. I say good luck Kimbo…the party is over, the big money making is now over, the headlining fights are over….now go out there and prove yourself a fighter and get banged up from the bottom to the top like all of them…………c`mon…..we all knew it would just take someone…even if it was a light heavyweight that knew anything in this game would beat ya.

The short jab cut Kimbo’s eye and stunned him. The majority of the punches after that were to the back of his head. Kimbo will be back. He has some natural abilities and is training with Bas Rutten so he will get better. They should give him time to develop before making him a headliner.

Well someone who was actually in it for a real career in the sport instead of the quick money probably would prefer to not be pushed into main events with all that pressure right from the start. Kimbo got paid what he did because he was a youtube star and he has been pushed as one of the best in the sport ever since even thought that is just not the case. There is nothing wrong with picking making the money now over building to a legitimate career but lets not act like he was some kind of victim of EliteXC here he was in on the Kimbo hype right there with them. You’ve seen some interviews where he was acting humble and that’s great but this guy has done a lot of interviews and not all of them are like that, he’s also a guy that wouldn’t even touch gloves before the fight and walked into Petruzelli’s interview after it was over.

A thrown fight on a “gymnastics floor mat” with weak punches. Its like a pillow fight at a pajama party. Kimbo lost before it even started, notice the post media hype and his reluctance to interview. Put mixed martial artist and street fighters in a real setting and level the playing field.

i am curious to see what eliteXC does next.
I dont care for him much for Kimbo, but he is SUPERB for getting fairweather fans into the sport & building EliteXC up… and EliteXC helped make popular Gino Carano who I DO like to watch. If UFC were the only organization, we’d never see Gina fight mainstream!

LOL what are you even talking about? Every MMA promotion uses some kind of padding, and Kimbo was fighting MMA rules. Why does the surface even matter? If it does, he’s never said so. You think Kimbo would have won if it was on concrete?
im gonna take a wild guess and say you’re new to MMA.

egad81- No Cyborg doesn’t need a DNA Test, but they should check her for testicles and a penis.

As far as Kimbo goes I think he must feel some relief now that he lost a fight, it’s hard to say how much of that hype got to him in a personally negative way.
Kimbo’s not done, they can build him as fighter on the road back to redemption…. schedule his next fight with Ken Shamrock, casual kimbo fans will still watch him fight since they’ve gotten a taste of this crazy MMA rollercoaster sport. Fans continued to watch Mike Tyson after his loss to buster douglas. Each time Kimbo loses though, the ‘hype’ pill will be harder to swallow.
Elite XC is not done because Kimbo loss, it’s partnership with Affliction brings new and exciting talent to CBS. Now Elite XC can feel somewhat free to push and promote some of it’s bigger talent.
Imagine this next CBS ELITE XC AND AFFLICTION CARD.
Fedor VS Arlovski
Kimbo VS Ken Shamrock
Tito Ortiz VS Frank Shamrock
Carano VS Cyborg
Shields VS Lawler – Champion VS Champion
Renato Sobral VS Seth Petruzilli

First off Babalu vs Seth Petruzelli???????? Are you serious?
Second do you really think CBS would pay for that card? Because EliteXC and Affliction sure couldn’t. Just having Fedor and Tito on the same card would require a Congressional bailout to pay for. The money in MMA is in PPV, heck CBS probably isn’t paying them enough to make money on the shows as they stand now. Of course that card would be hard to make money off of even if it did good ppv numbers even.
I’d expect the next CBS card to be Kimbo vs Shamrock again and maybe Petruzelli and Aaron Rosa to opening the show instead of being on the undercard.

LOL, that is true, but I don’t think there’s really any need to baby Petruzelli…at least give him a name opponent that will truely add to the events line up and weed out the non-talented… let darwinism take it’s natural order.
Elite XC in one of it’s ealier SEC reports stated it may not have the funds to last . They needed to pull of at least a 2.5 rating on CBS for its May 31 show.
The numbers for the 3rd event was close to the May 31 show. July 26 was not consider a success.
With these number CBS should air a 4th event, but risk losing a number of viewers with Kimbo’s loss, Elite XC needs to ensure they win the numbers rating regardless… or all is probably lost with CBS.
May 31 “Saturday Night Fights”: 1.9/6 with 4 million viewers
July 26 “Unfinished Business”: 1.0/3 with 2.62 million viewers
October 4 “Heat”: 1.8/6 with 4.38 million viewers
CBS has a 4 fight deal with Elite XC, so only 1 more to go, if they are going to sink like many are speculating because Kimbo lost, then they’d better make this an explosive card… don’t pull any punches and go down fighting and figure it out event to event, don’t risk losing it all by pulling any punches because they’re scared to shoot their wad on this one card. I luv’d that they partnered with Affliction, I wouldn’t be surprised if they partner up with Golden Boy’s Pay Per View Cards as well.

Tito vs Frank will give them their Kimbo-like draw – because the casual fan +UFC fans (I say that because UFC fans aren;t nessicarily a fan of MMA – just the UFC – I could term that differently I know – but I’m sure y’all know what I mean) will watch because they know who the fighters are – I don’t think CBS would pay for Fedor – even though the showed commercials with him in them (I hope I’m wrong for the record) – I pray EliteXC survives, and hope a talent merger is in the works for that reason – whatver they call it AfflictionXC Boy – I don;t care as long as MMA fans get to see fights – - and it’s a bad thing if the UFC absorbs all these fighters – -

“So am I alone in thinking Cyborg needs a DNA test?”
NO egad, you are not alone. There were a couple ladies watching the show Sat. and they both yelled at the same time “THAT’S A MAN” as soon as ‘her’ mug flashed on the screen.
But if you think Chris is ugly now, wait till Gina is done with ‘her’…

JB Buc sounds like your ladies are a little insecure about their lack of athleticism, lol. PS I’m not a giant fan of Chris Cyborg or anything but she is gonna wreck Gina. Gina is incredible but Cyborg is another level.

Kimbo should still be fighting in “Whistledick Chavez’s cage of doom” promotion in some Podunk town in no where USA. Street cred does not an MMA fighter make.

He threw that fight, cuz he got paid $500,000 if he lossed & would’ve only made 600,000 if he won. So he said why take the pain, medical bills, and time 4 only $100,000 more. Plus they werent letting Kimbo fight 2 many people becuz he was undefeated now that he got beat they will let him fight more people and make more money
