Brian Stann off UFN 16 card due to injury

Former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Stann will not be able to fight on the December 10th UFC FIGHT FOR THE TROOPS show which is to be held at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Sources close to the fighter today confirmed to Fiveouncesofpain.com that an injury to the fighter’s foot would not allow him to fight in his scheduled bout with Steve Cantwell.

Stann and Cantwell first clashed at WEC 26 in March of 2007 with Stann winning via TKO in just 41 seconds into round 1. Stann would go on to claim the WEC light heavyweight title and made his first defense against Cantwell at WEC 35 on August 3. This time around, it was Cantwell who got the win, becoming the new champ following a second round TKO.

No word on a possible replacement for Stann is known at this time.

The show, which will be broadcast on Spike TV, will be a fundraiser for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to deceased and wounded U.S. military veterans.

Too bad. I was looking forward to seeing his improvement with a new camp. It would have been a good way to get his name and face out there with new fans, too.

I wonder if they will now switch Cantwell to a title defense at WEC 37. Give him one chance to defend it before the switch to the UFC.

i was really saddend by stann’s last performance and was really excited to see how he’d do with as great a camp as jacksons. too bad we have to wait a little bit longer. it’s going to be really interesting to see how well the WEC Light Heavyweights and Middleweights compare to UFC fighters. this is where we can really find out if the WEC is really the little leagues

What a bummer. It’d be a great rubber match. I saw an interview and he said he’d love to fight in front of the troops. Although I would have to put my money on Cantwell again. Hopefully they find someone for him to fight in the UFC.

I think this could be a good thing for both fighters. The are both inexperienced and young, and fighting each other 3 times in a row might not be the best thing. A rubber match will still be there after they fight someone else. Maybe someone like Jon Jones, Gusmao for Cantwell, or for Stann some of these guys coming off this season of the Ultimate fighter would make good fights.

Too bad he got injured…however, I didn’t want to see the 3rd match this quickly either.

Got to hang out with Stann tonight as he was in town to support a friend’s father in his election campaign. I have to say he is a total class act. Nice guy all around. Plus, he seemed legitimately bummed about not being able to fight Cantwell. I’m sure we’ll see them run this one again as soon as both guys are ready.

This is a shame. Was looknig forwad to the fight and seeing what Stann would take from his lost. Also to see him fight in front of the troops would have been very cool and a HUGE pop for the card.
