Georges St. Pierre receives BJJ black belt

October 12, 2008 by Scott White

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has been awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt by Bruno Fernandes.

The Franchise Radio
is reporting that St. Pierre received his black belt on Saturday at TriStar Gym which was the end of a monthly seminar being held by BJJ world champion Bruno Fernandes.

In an interview with GracieMag.com, St. Pierre said the moment ranks as one of the best in his life. “When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”

St. Pierre was last in action on Aug. 9 at UFC 87: Seek and Destroy where he beat on top contender Jon Fitch for five rounds. St. Pierre is currently rumored to be fighting UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn at UFC 94 on Jan. 31 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since his last appearance in the cage, St. Pierre has kept busy splitting his training time between WAT in New York, TriStar Gym in Montreal and Greg Jackson’s in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

That’s ridiculous, “Do a cameo at my seminar, I’ll give you a black belt” or “Here is an honorary black belt, much like the honorary degrees colleges give out.”

It didn’t occur to you that GSP might have been attending the seminar more than 5 minutes to get the belt?

Wow, that is great for him! I’m sure one day when he retires as one of the best mixed martial artist, he will be a top notch instructor to guide and teach young up and comers… Congrats to him, he worked for it I don’t doubt it..

There’s been a lot of fighters with BJJ black belts in MMA, but St. Pierre is one of the fighters who’s been able to use it.

That submission he invented on Matt Hughes in their last fight was outstanding.

    Yes.
Finally GSP has the tools to be a good fighter.

Now all GSP needs is a Boxing coach like Freddie Roach, he has done work with Andrei.

Checked out the Finch fight on Saturday..you can see why he got the black belt. Its amazing to watch a guy w/ no ameuter wrestling exp dominating all-american caliber guys.
